Alex children gleeful as they celebrate Children's Day
An atmosphere of joy filled the Alexandra 3rd Ave Children's Library as children gathered to celebrate Children's Day on June 6.
The event was hosted by the Alex Early Childhood Development (ECD) Forum in collaboration with Ladles of Love, Colgate, and the Dis-chem Foundation.

The deputy chairperson of the forum Wendy Ramogale said the celebration formed part of their forum's efforts to improve children's physical activity. 'These days, children no longer play outside. Most children are always indoors watching TV and scrolling through social media. So, it's best for them to go outside. At least when they are out like this, they get to play and they are also socialising.'
Children were filled with excitement as they participated in a sack race, hopping to the finish line. Some participated in an egg race game, rushing to cross the finish line first while trying to balance their eggs on a spoon. Others were bursting with laughter as they struggled to twirl their hula hoops around their waist.
'Children are happy, and all the teachers are also getting to know each other. It is teamwork because the principals are cooking for all the children today. Ladles of Love donated food for us, and Dischem donated food parcels for the children. So, the day is 'wow',' Ramogale shared.

Johannesburg branch manager of Ladles of Love Phindile Nkosi said they wanted to cherish the children and celebrate Children's Day with them. She acknowledged the significance of the day, and emphasised that beyond fun and games, her organisation protested children from malnutrition and hunger. 'We do not provide them with junk food, but we give them vegetables. So, we are trying to fight malnutrition and to make sure children are healthy in the ECDs. We also provide them with two meals per day to try to prevent hunger.'
After participating in all the games, children were offered Colgate packs and snacks while waiting for teachers to finish cooking.
