Patrick Mahomes, Matthew Stafford offer similar reasons for not wanting to play flag football at 2028 Olympics: Leave it 'to the younger guys'
Football is a young man's game. Once a player hits 32, the bottom can drop out at any moment. Running backs don't get that same treatment. Once they hit 29, people are eager to write them off. But the best-of-the-best quarterbacks can seemingly play forever. Tom Brady did it. Drew Brees did it. Aaron Rodgers recovered from a torn Achilles to play last season at age 40. Los Angeles Rams starter Matthew Stafford isn't quite that old yet, but he's close. At 37, Stafford is still putting up capable numbers as a starter. While Stafford could probably keep playing a few more years, he has no interest in seeing how his skills translate to the world of flag football. NFL players were cleared to play the sport at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, but don't expect to see Stafford take the field when the time comes. The long-time veteran joked that maybe he would be interested in coaching the team, but that's about it. Even if he's still playing in the NFL at that point, it's unlikely he's going to want to take on the challenge of prepping for the Olympics and then playing an entire NFL season. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes isn't in the exact same position, but he offered up a similar reason for skipping out on the 2028 Olympics. Mahomes, 29, said he would leave flag football "to the younger guys." #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes on potentially playing flag football in the 2028 Olympics: 'I'll probably leave that to the younger guys.' — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 29, 2025 It's silly to think of Mahomes as an old player, but he's been in the NFL for eight seasons now and will be 32 when the 2028 Olympics begin. Mahomes could still be the best quarterback in the NFL at that time, but it sounds like he's more than content to let someone in their early-to-mid 20s getting the starting nod in the Olympics. Mahomes and Stafford are probably right, youth is the answer. The image of Stafford holding a clipboard and yelling out play calls on the sideline at the 2028 Olympics is so fun, however, that those in charge might need to make it a reality.

Matthew Stafford laughed his way through answer about playing Olympic flag football
Matthew Stafford laughed his way through answer about playing Olympic flag football Matthew Stafford had a hilarious response about playing flag football in the 2028 Olympics 😂 (via @RamsNFL) — Sports Illustrated (@SInow) May 29, 2025 The addition of flag football to the 2028 Summer Olympics has been a popular topic among NFL players now that they have permission to participate. But I don't think we can expect to see Matthew Stafford suiting up for Team USA. He'd be the first to admit that. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Stafford was asked about how interested he would be in competing in the Olympics for the U.S. flag football team. And let's just say that the Rams quarterback isn't holding out hope for a roster spot. Stafford will be 40 during the 2028 Summer Games. And flag football especially depends on a quarterback with mobility. Stafford isn't mobile at all at 37. We can only imagine what that speed will look like at 40 years old. He laughed his way through the answer, which was too good. He'd be down to coach! And though the NFL owners approved player participation in the Olympics, it did come with some restrictions. Just one player per team could (in addition to a designated international player) can participate in the Olympics. Given Stafford's age in 2028, he shouldn't expect to be the Rams' representative there.

Watch: Rams troll their opponents in with not one, but two schedule release videos
Watch: Rams troll their opponents in with not one, but two schedule release videos BRENDA. KNOWS. BALL. 🚨 Schedule Update '25 with Brenda Song — Los Angeles Rams (@RamsNFL) May 15, 2025 Schedule release day is practically the Super Bowl for social media units of each NFL team. All 32 franchises release some creative way to reveal their schedule for the upcoming season and the Los Angeles Rams went all out in 2025 with not one video, but two. In each, they trolled their opponents by making fun of their mascot, their team as a whole or one of their players (sorry Trevor Lawrence). The first video featured Brenda Song, who narrated a mock newscast laying out the Rams' schedule. Even former Rams wideout Cooper Kupp wasn't safe from getting called out. The second video featured several Rams players, with the social media admin showing each of them a meme of one opponent. Even Jelly Roll was included in the video, rocking a Titans jersey – which had Steve Avila taken aback. When the 49ers came up, the meme was a shot of their fans riding the escalators out of SoFi Stadium. "The Whiners," Avila said. you meme to tell me this is the 2025 schedule — Los Angeles Rams (@RamsNFL) May 15, 2025 Below is the Rams' complete schedule from start to finish.
