Rangers transfer news as Russell Martin 'eyes' ambitious Ramsdale reunion and Poku interest escalates

The Light Blues are expected to overhaul their squad this summer under the new regime Rangers have reportedly 'entered the race' for Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale - as they register their interest in Peterborough winger Kwame Poku. New Ibrox boss Russell Martin took Ramsdale to St Mary's from Arsenal last summer in a £25million deal but it ended in disappointment with Saints relegated from the English Premier League and Martin sacked. ‌ But it's now claimed that the Light Blues boss is keen on a reunion with the 27-year-old England man, although West Ham United and Leeds United are leading the race. ‌ Sportsboom say: 'Ramsdale would represent a real statement of intent' for new Rangers owners 49ers Enterprises,' but add of the manager-player relationship, 'the pair remain on good terms and would welcome the chance of working together again in the future.' There are question marks over the goalkeeping situation at Rangers with Jack Butland dropped by caretaker boss Barry Ferguson following loss of form with Liam Kelly coming in between the sticks. Butland was then given the last couple of games but the former England man's future at Ibrox is still in doubt. Rangers Review also report that Posh winger Poku is another the Ibrox side are keen on with the 23-year-old out of contract at the League One side, although they would be entitled to compensation for the player they signed from Cambridge United at the age of 19. The right winger is seen as a potential replacement for Vaclav Cerny who returned to Wolfsburg after a loan spell. Poku is also wanted by Birmingham City and has admirers in Germany and France. ‌ Meanwhile, Ianis Hagi revealed he was in talks with clubs interested in him during his final six months at Rangers. And he's confirmed he has refused an offer from Steaua Bucharest to return to his Romanian homeland. The son of former Real Madrid and Barcelona legend Gheorghe is currently injured and was released by the Ibrox club at the end of the season. Despite being linked with moves to Borussia Monchengladbach and Genoa, the only official offer to come his way was one to return to Romanian football to sign with Steaua Bucharest. But he admitted he's been weighing up proposals for some time. Hagi said: "I'm still looking at my options and offers. In fact, when I was in the last six months of my contract at Rangers, there were contacts, talks and conversations with different teams, it's normal. "I thank everyone who talked about me and was interested in Romania but my decision is to stay abroad. I just hope I'm inspired to make the best decision for my future."

Premier League rival line up deal for £20m ex-Arsenal star after Man Utd links

Aaron Ramsdale suffered the third relegation of his career with Southampton in the 2024-25 season but West Ham are reportedly keen to give him another chance in the Premier League West Ham are reportedly eyeing up a move for ex- Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale after he dropped into the Championship with Southampton. Ramsdale started 30 games for the Saints in the Premier League but could not prevent their relegation as they became one of the worst sides in top flight history, going down with seven games to play. For Ramsdale, it meant that he had suffered three Premier League relegations despite often being part of the England squad. The 27-year-old has five caps for England, though has been unable to unseat No 1 Jordan Pickford. ‌ According to talkSPORT, the Hammers are keen on giving Ramsdale another chance to prove his worth in the Premier League and show Thomas Tuchel he should be part of his 2026 World Cup squad. ‌ The London outfit have already held talks with the player, the report says, with manager Graham Potter a "big admirer" of the keeper. Ramsdale has only been with Southampton for a year after the Saints reportedly paid around £25m for his services. It is claimed that the Saints, who are now managed by Will Still, would want at least £20m to part ways. He is said to be on around £100,000-a-week at St Mary's and the club are eager to get his big salary off the wage bill. West Ham boss Potter is in need of a new goalkeeper to rival Alphonse Areola after long-serving Lukasz Fabianski left the club. However, the Hammers might have competition after reports that Ramsdale has emerged as a target for Manchester United amid pressure on error-prone Andre Onana. A report from the Sun in April claimed United were hoping to pounce on Southampton's relegation by making a bid for the keeper. United have already kicked off their summer window with the signing of Matheus Cunha, while Bryan Mbeumo could soon join him. ‌ But the Red Devils are unlikely to stop there as Ruben Amorim looks to completely revamp his woefully underperforming squad. Onana has been heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, but even if he remains at Old Trafford, United want to improve their options behind him. Altay Bayindir stepped in for the Cameroon international in April when he was dropped for under-par performances. However, Bayindir struggled to take his chance in a chastening defeat to Newcastle. Ramsdale started his career with Sheffield United before joining Bournemouth in 2017, before being relegated with the Cherries in 2020. He would return to his boyhood club The Blades, playing every game of the 2021-22 campaign before suffering yet another relegation and sealing a move to Arsenal. Ramsdale became Arsenal No 1 for two seasons until he lost his spot to David Raya in the 2023-24 campaign and decided to join the Saints.

Jamie Carragher praises Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta for 'best transfer decision'

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has had to make plenty of big calls during his time at the helm but his decision to change goalkeepers back in 2023 has been singled out by Jamie Carragher Mikel Arteta has been lauded by Jamie Carragher for having the courage to replace Aaron Ramsdale with David Raya following another stellar season for the Arsenal goalkeeper. More than a few eyebrows were raised when Raya, 29, was signed on loan from Brentford in the summer of 2023 to compete with Ramsdale, who was viewed as the Gunners' undisputed first-choice keeper. But the Spaniard promptly leapfrogged Ramsdale in the pecking order and has gone from strength to strength in an Arsenal shirt. ‌ With Raya establishing himself both as a colossal figure in Arsenal's rear guard and one of the Premier League's top goalkeepers, the furore over Arteta's controversial decision has mostly been forgotten. ‌ But Carragher has referenced Arteta 's call after considering Raya for his team of the season, saying it was one of the 'best decisions' the Arsenal manager has ever made. "I picked Alisson as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League this season but I was very close to picking David Raya," Carragher said on The Overlap. "Alisson had that performance against PSG and that was one of the best we've seen from a goalkeeper so maybe that stuck in my head. But Raya probably had five or six world-class saves this season. There was one against Aston Villa and Ollie Watkins but it was that long ago that it feels like last season. "That was one of the best decisions Mikel Arteta made, it was brave because Aaron Ramsdale was a bit of a fans' favourite but Arsenal were never going to win anything big with him in goal. Join the debate! Do you agree with Carragher's verdict? Let us know here ‌ "They haven't done that with Raya yet either by the way but it was a good decision." While Raya has established himself as the club's No.1 with Ramsdale since moving on, Arteta is keen to acquire more competition for the Spain international ahead of the 2025-26 campaign with Espanyol's Joan Garcia once again on his radar. Arsenal pursued a deal for the 24-year-old last summer in their search for a Ramsdale replacement. But they will try for his signature again in the upcoming transfer window with the star now likely to leave Espanyol.
