HAU protest: Haryana govt panel holds talks with students
Jun 22, 2025 07:06 AM IST A four-member Haryana government panel on Saturday held two rounds of talks with students of Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (CCSHAU), Hisar, who have been protesting on campus since June 10 following a lathi charge by university officials and security personnel. A third round of talks was underway at the time of filing this report. (Sourced) The committee, comprising education minister Mahipal Dhanda, public works minister Ranbir Gangwa, social justice and empowerment minister Krishan Kumar Bedi, and Nalwa MLA Randhir Panihar, met a 12-member student delegation at the deputy commissioner's office in Hisar. A third round of talks was underway at the time of filing this report. The students submitted a dossier to the panel containing video footage of the alleged assault, medical records and testimonies from injured students. However, neither the panel nor the students disclosed which demands had been accepted or rejected, citing that final discussions were still ongoing. More than 350 students have signed a memorandum demanding the removal of vice-chancellor BR Kamboj, accusing him of stifling dissent and ordering the June 10 lathi charge outside his official residence. A copy of the memorandum has also been sent to Haryana governor Bandaru Dattatreya. At the protest site, students have put up a large poster titled 'Wall of Courage,' which supporters—including fellow students, faculty members, and parents—are signing as a show of solidarity.

There is no official word on which demands have been agreed upon. The student delegation, comprising 12 representatives, submitted a comprehensive document to the committee. The dossier includes medical reports, video evidence, and testimonies from students allegedly injured during the June 10 incident. The delegation demanded justice and urged the committee to ensure a fair and timely resolution. The govt formed the committee on Friday, following the students' declaration that they would no longer engage with the university administration, citing repeated administrative actions taken against them. The committee includes education minister Mahipal Dhanda, PWD minister Ranbir Gangwa, social justice and empowerment minister Krishna Bedi, and Nalwa MLA Randhir Panihar. The agriculture minister—despite the university's focus—was excluded from the panel. Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini earlier stated that the Haryana govt stood firmly with students and youth, and would ensure no injustice was done to them. On Saturday morning, students began their day with a group yoga session in observance of International Yoga Day. They emphasised that the protest is not only a physical movement but also a demonstration of mental discipline, resilience, and unity. The students also chanted Om and recited the Preamble of the Constitution during the session, creating a solemn and spirited atmosphere at the protest site. 1 2 Panchkula: Haryana's public health and engineering and PWD (BR) minister, Ranbir Gangwa, held a comprehensive review meeting on Wednesday with state officials of the public health department at Red Bishop, Sector 1, and through video conferencing with officers across the state. The meeting focused on ensuring the effective functioning of the state's drinking water supply system, especially amid rising temperatures. Gangwa directed all officers to conduct regular field visits to inspect and rectify any faults in the water supply system. He emphasised that with summer at its peak, uninterrupted access to safe drinking water must be a top priority. "Every citizen deserves adequate drinking water, and we must ensure this through timely inspections and quick resolutions," he said. He also instructed officials to take strict action against any illegal water connections and prevent leakage due to unauthorised usage. Officers were also warned not to leave their stations without prior approval and to maintain close coordination with power and irrigation departments to manage water and electricity supply smoothly.
