Unlikely hero Mark Keane produces ‘one of the great' marks to help Crows win epic Showdown
Unheralded Adelaide defender Mark Keane has produced 'one of the great' marks to help his side beat Port Adelaide by five points in an epic Showdown. The Crows looked home when superstar Izak Rankine kicked two goals in a magical minute, but the Power set up a grandstand finish with a late goal to reduce the margin to less than a kick with just over a minute remaining. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Keane's match-saving mark. They got the next centre clearance through Jason Horne-Francis, who kicked long to set up what looked like would be another scoring opportunity. But Keane had other ideas. He bravely ran back with the flight and clunked a match-saving mark. 'We've seen some great marks in our time and to the people who judge mark of the week and mark of the year, this has to be in the (mix). In the context of where they are, look what he does, back into traffic, not knowing what's coming the other way at a critical time. He's just a hero,' Garry Lyon said on Fox Footy. Reilly O'Brien pulled down another big mark moments later as the Crows held on for a 13.11 (89) to 12.12 (84) victory. The Crows held a slender two-point advantage at the final change before Darcy Fogarty kicked the all-important first foal of the last quarter. Then it turned into the Rankine show. First he received a handball from Reilly O'Brien before brilliantly finishing on the run to put the Crows up by 15 points. Then from the next centre bounce, captain Jordan Dawson kicked forward and Fogarty spilled an easy mark only to watch as Rankine came flying in and soccered the loose ball out of mid-air for an incredible goal. 'I just threw my boot at it and it went through, it was nice,' Rankine told Fox Footy after the match. Izak Rankine kicks a cracking soccer goal in the Showdown It put the Crows up by 21 points, the biggest lead of the match. The Power reduced the margin to four points in the closing stages, but Keane stood tool to ice the game. 'It'll be hard to beat (for Mark of the Year),' David King added.

Crows pip Port in another SA Showdown thriller
Adelaide have held off a late Port Adelaide surge to pip their bitter rivals by five points in yet another South Australian Showdown thriller. Five Crows booted multiple goals in a 13.11 (89) to 12.12 (84) victory before a bumper 53,117-strong crowd at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night. Adelaide led by two points at three quarter-time and made a defining move with three goals in a four-minute burst in the last term - two in 60 seconds from Izak Rankine. But just when the Power appeared out, Port booted two late goals - the last from Jeremy Finlayson reduced their deficit to four points with one minute 47 seconds remaining. The Crows survived the frantic finale to edge the Power 29-28 in the overall record, but defender Mark Keane was reported. The Irishman - who took a courageous contested mark to deny a Port attack in the last minute - pushed out with his legs, connecting with the midriff of Finlayson, in the third quarter. Adelaide retain a grip on fifth spot with Riley Thilthorpe and Darcy Fogarty slotting three goals each and Rankine, Josh Rachele and Ben Keays booting two. Thilthorpe was an immense aerial presence, grabbing 10 marks - half of them contested - while ex-Giant James Peatling (24 disposals) and defender Josh Worrell (23) were influential. Port skipper Connor Rozee was superb at halfback with 32 touches and a goal and his deputy Zak Butters (33 possessions) was typically busy. Miles Bergman's tag on Jordan Dawson (14 disposals) paid off, Finlayson slotted three goals and Mitch Georgiades, Darcy Byrne-Jones and Sam Powell-Pepper scored two apiece. Adelaide opened with a dominant quarter-hour for a 15-1 lead but led by only three at quarter-time, 3.4 to 3.1. An after-the-siren conversion from Crow Josh Rachele gave Adelaide a five-point buffer at halftime, 7.8 to 7.3. The tide turned towards Port early in the third quarter with Rozee scoring after a 50m penalty against Rankine rapidly followed by a Powell-Pepper strike. The Power led by nine points before the Crows rallied with the next three goals - the first from Thilthorpe after another strong mark - for an eight-point lead. But a stunning snap from a tight angle by Jason Horne-Francis reduced Port's deficit to just two points at three quarter-time. The Crows then kicked three goals in four minutes and were 21 21 points up before Port's late flourish - Byrne-Jones and Finlayson goaled only for their side to fall just short.

Adelaide coach responds as AFL debate erupts over 'atrocious' Izak Rankine call
Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks has taken aim at AFL officials after questioning why Izak Rankine wasn't paid a late mark or free kick in his side's controversial one-point loss to Gold Coast. The Suns prevailed 13.13 (91) to 14.6 (90) at home on Saturday but benefited from several questionable calls that have divided footy fans around the country. The most contentious of those saw officials fail to pay a mark in the pocket for Rankine with just 90 seconds left on the clock and the Crows trailing by the solitary point. Rankine looked set to take a comfortable chest mark that would have seen him line up for a set shot at goal to win the match, with a behind even good enough to snatch a draw for Adelaide. But just as Rankine appeared to catch the ball he was caught in a tackle from the Suns and the ball popped out, with Gold Coast able to clear the danger and hang on for a tense victory. A heated exchange between Mac Andrew and five-goal Crows star Riley Thilthorpe after the final siren shifted some of the attention away from the game's biggest talking point but Nicks and AFL fans were left baffled by the non-call for Rankine afterwards, with many declaring that Adelaide were 'robbed'. And reported that the Crows would ask the AFL for a 'please explain' as Nicks questioned the umpiring decision-making. "If he didn't mark it, he was tackled in the marking contest," Nicks said in his post-match press conference about the match-defining Rankine decision. "Clearly, we weren't at our best today, but I thought we did really well to hang in... we've given ourselves a chance and you need every bit of luck in that moment. "That last minute and a half we clearly didn't get things going our way. So I sit here as a coach and say, 'What do I preach to the players?'. I preach about being in the moment, don't blame others, get on with life, you've got to butter up and go again next week, so I'm doing my best to stay in that space. I'd say we've got some frustrated fans out there and I feel for them and I'm a little bit with them." Dual premiership Kangaroo David King agreed, accusing the umpire of 'freezing up' with the game on the line and a massive call to make. 'That's a mark and/or a free kick," King told Fox Footy. "You can't tackle a guy while he's marking the ball. You can't drive into the middle of his back. The umpire froze, let's be honest, he didn't want to pay the decision. It's a mark or a free kick, there's no doubt about that.' Adelaide ROBBED… wow. That was laughably bad umpiring to close the game. Tipped the Suns so happy about the result but geez, I'd be ropeable if I was a Crows fan! How do you not pay that Rankine mark?? #AFL — Larry Bird (@larrybirdizzel2) April 5, 2025 the Rankine non-call won't be beaten for umpire clanger of the season #aflsunscrows — Sam Walker (@samuelsays11) April 5, 2025 I don't barrack for either side, but it was clear to me that the umpires made some dubious calls in favour of Gold Coast, which helped them to the 1 point robbed of a mark. — Phill T (@philltee) April 5, 2025 Rankine incident not really a debate.10,000% a mark. And a clear umpiring error. — Darren Parkin (@Darren_Parkin) April 5, 2025 Dear @AFL Please explain the umpiring in the Suns vs Crows game. Last 4 minutes was absolutely atrocious. Congratulations to the Gold Coast on your win, but no one wants to win that way. #WeFlyAsOne — Scott (@Scottelderfiel1) April 5, 2025 Richmond great Jack Riewoldt said the umpires also got another big call wrong when Jed Walter appeared to play on in the goal square after stepping over his mark. He quickly backtracked and was given the benefit of the doubt from officials. 'There were a few moments in the last quarter where the umpire froze as well, Jed Walter... he played on when he took that mark in the first minute of the last quarter,' he said. Gold Coast coach Damien Hardwick refused to be drawn on the drama though, and said it's just the nature of the game that some calls will go your way, while others don't. "We're not going to go through every free kick, are we?" he said. "There's a few that could have gone either way. Swings and roundabouts. It's a tough game to umpire." The undefeated Suns started hot in a see-sawing contest, and twice went ahead by 18 points before the Crows launched a spirited second half fightback. Rankine (21 disposals, 10 clearances) was a standout for the Crows, while Suns recruit Daniel Rioli (26 touches, 630 metres gained) played his best game in Gold Coast colours. Jed Walter kicked three goals for the Suns while fellow talls Ben King, Ben Long and Will Graham had two each. And Taylor Walker also impressed after kicking four goals for the Crows, who hadn't lost a quarter in their three previous wins. Adelaide will now need to regroup ahead of Thursday night's Gather Round opener against Geelong, with the Suns facing North Melbourne after winning three-straight games to start the season for just the second time in club history. with AAP
