Indoor training facility for baseball, softball and lacrosse now open in Charlotte

Players' Athletic Club (PAC), a new indoor sports training facility, is now open just off Wendover Road. Why it matters: Charlotte parents drive their kids all over Mecklenburg County and beyond for games and practices. Now many families have an option closer to home. Plus an indoor space means kids can get in reps regardless of the weather. Context: Blair Henson, PAC's director of operations, tells Axios his 12-year-old nephew Jack inspired the facility. Jack plays travel baseball and his family thought it would be nice to have something closer to home. What to expect: PAC, which soft opened last fall, includes seven retractable batting cages (four of which are 70 feet in length and three are 50 feet). The space primarily serves baseball, softball and lacrosse players. The space is equipped with Hack Attack Pitching Machines, Rapsodo, and Hittrax (a simulator that can do everything from help you study and improve your form to simulate your hitting at Truist Field in Uptown). The floors are covered in turf and when the nets are lifted, it provides a large open space for larger team training. You can rent a batting cage for 30 minutes ($35), 60 minutes ($60), or buy multiple sessions (book online). Balls are provided; just bring your own bat, helmet, and glove. They also offer private lessons and special programs led by former professional baseball players. Former Baltimore Orioles player Jim Rooney is PAC's director of player development. Between the lines: The PAC team bought the facility for $2.7 million, per county records, and invested $300,000 to upfit the space. Stop by: Players Athletic Club is at 3525 Latrobe Dr. in Grier Heights just down from Habitat for Humanity ReStore on Wendover Road. It's open 3-8pm Monday through Friday and 10am until 4pm Saturday.
