Dortmund and Frankfurt in Champions League, Heidenheim face play-off
Dortmund's Felix Nmecha (C) celebrates scoring his side's third goal with teammates during the German Bundesliga soccer match between Borussia Dortmund and Holstein Kiel at Signal Iduna Park. Bernd Thissen/dpa Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt secured berths in the Champions League as the Bundesliga season reached its dramatic climax on Saturday, with Heidenheim confirmed in the relegation play-off spot. Frankfurt won 3-1 at rivals Freiburg and Dortmund eased past already-relegated Holstein Kiel 3-0 thanks to Serhou Guirassy, Marcel Sabitzer and Felix Nmecha, leaving Freiburg in a Europa League spot having yet again narrowly missed out on the Champions League. Advertisement Frankfurt, third for much of the season, ended Freiburg's hopes of a first ever Champions League qualification in Julian Schuster's first season in charge, while Dortmund have rocketed up the table in recent weeks under Niko Kovač having been 11th when he was appointed in January. Mainz edged RB Leipzig to the Conference League slot after a 2-2 draw at home to Bayer Leverkusen sealed by Jonathan Burkardt's penalty. Leipzig will not be in Europe for the first time since their Bundesliga debut in 2016-17 following a shock 3-2 home defeat by mid-table VfB Stuttgart, who can grab a Europa League spot by beating third-tier Arminia Bielefeld in next Saturday's German Cup final. Heidenheim needed a large goal difference swing to pull St Pauli or Hoffenheim into trouble and avoid finishing third-bottom in the play-off spot. The 4-1 home defeat by mid-table Werder Bremen made any mathematics irrelevant. Advertisement St Pauli lost 2-0 at home to already-relegated Bochum and hosts Hoffenheim were beaten 4-0 by long-crowned champions Bayern Munich, whose departing veteran Thomas Müller played what is set to be his last Bundesliga game. Heidenheim will face the third-placed team in the second tier - currently Elversberg - over two legs on Thursday and the following Monday for a place in next season's Bundesliga. SV Hamburg have already secured promotion and Cologne are favourites to join them on the second-tier's final day on Sunday. In two games with nothing to play for, Borussia Mönchengladbach were undone 1-0 at home by Wolfsburg while Union Berlin overcame Augsburg 2-1 away in storied referee Felix Brych's last game. Leeds' Rasmus Kristensen to complete permanent Eintracht Frankfurt transfer
Eintracht Frankfurt have agreed a deal to complete the permanent signing of Leeds United defender Rasmus Kristensen. The transfer will be completed when the summer transfer window opens on June 1. Leeds sources, who, like all of those spoken to for this article were speaking under the condition of anonymity to protect relationships, said the transfer could be worth up to €9million (£7.7m; $9.026m) to Leeds. Frankfurt sources told The Athletic the fee will be €6m (£5.1m; $6.8m) guaranteed, with potential add-ons. Advertisement The Denmark international has been on loan with the Bundesliga outfit since last July and has proven a big success at Waldstadion. Only two players, including former Leeds defender Robin Koch, have played more minutes than Kristensen in a campaign which has taken Frankfurt to third in the German top flight and the quarter-final stage of the Europa League. Kristensen, 28 in July, still has two years left to run on the five-year deal he signed when Leeds paid around £10m ($13.2m) for him in 2022. The right-back was brought in from Red Bull Salzburg because of his relationship with then-United head coach Jesse Marsch. He made 26 Premier League appearances across the 2022-23 campaign which ended in relegation for Leeds. In the summer of 2023, Kristensen was one of a number of players who saw loan clauses, activated by relegation, triggered. Roma loaned him during that window. Kristensen has not featured for Leeds in any game since the final-day loss to Tottenham Hotspur in May 2023 when relegation was confirmed. He was not someone deemed to have a future at Leeds, either in the top flight or the Championship. Head of football operations, Adam Underwood, has led the club's negotiations on this deal with Eintracht over the last few months. The former academy chief has seen his responsibilities on player trading increase since the end of 2024, with interim football advisor Nick Hammond winding down his duties at Elland Road. The deal represents a financial loss on what Leeds paid for Kristensen three years ago, but Leeds sources are pleased to have recouped the majority of that fee in this sale. Frankfurt beat Bochum to tighten grip on top four spot
Eintracht Frankfurt beat Bochum 3-1 in the Bundesliga on Sunday, boosting their chances of a first top-four finish in the Champions League era. Kick-off was delayed by 50 minutes as the visiting fans refused to remove banners blocking an emergency exit. Frankfurt took the lead 27 minutes in when Rasmus Kristensen thumped in his own rebound on the counter. The visitors doubled their lead shortly afterwards, with Jean-Matteo Bahoya's 32nd-minute strike set up by a brilliant pass from striker Hugo Ekitike. Gerrit Holtmann pulled one back with 73 minutes gone to give Bochum hope, but former Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi sealed the result with a stoppage-time strike, his second goal in two games since joining the Eagles in winter. The victory puts Frankfurt fourth, three points ahead of fifth-placed RB Leipzig. Frankfurt have never qualified for the Champions League through league placing but played in the competition in 2022-23 after winning the Europa League. Frankfurt, who face Tottenham in the Europa League quarter-finals in April, had lost their previous three league matches. Bochum were impressive despite the defeat, giving hope that they may pull off a great escape and beat the drop under coach Dieter Hecking. Hecking took over in November with Bochum having accumulated just one point all season. Since then, Bochum have won 19 points and have beaten giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. Later on Sunday, defending champions Bayer Leverkusen can cut Bayern Munich's lead atop the table to six points with a win at Stuttgart. Relegation-threatened Heidenheim host fellow strugglers Holstein Kiel in the other game. dwi/nf
