Gardeners urged to use simple trick to stop plants dying in heatwave
As a mini-heatwave sweeps the UK with temperatures reaching 30C, a gardening expert has shared her essential tips to protect your plants against the elements With temperatures set to hit 30C this week, gardens across the UK are now in need of some extra care. As a mini heatwave sets in, gardening expert Hannah Rowson from seeds and bulb specialists J Parker's has offered her top advice for keeping outdoor spaces healthy and vibrant throughout the hottest part of the year. Use rainy days to protect against future heatwaves It might sound simple, but increasing how often you water your plants during the summer is key to keeping them from drying out. Hannah Rowson advises that the ideal time to water is early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when temperatures are cooler. This helps ensure that the water reaches the roots before it evaporates from the soil. Unfortunately, with the heatwaves comes the threat of a hosepipe ban. To avoid any water supply issues, the expert suggests collecting rainwater in a water butt throughout the year. "Collecting rainwater using water butts will prevent you from being caught out by any hosepipe bans and offers a great alternative to keep your plants hydrated without relying on your main water supply," she said. Shield container plants from direct sunlight in hot weather Brits are also urged to shield container plants from direct sunlight in hot weather, reports the Express. If you have any plants in moveable containers, consider moving them into shaded areas. This handy trick will stop the plants from becoming overwhelmed by the sun's heat, keeping them healthy, colourful, and beautiful throughout the season. Choose plants that can handle the heat If you haven't already planted your garden display, then Hannah advises you to consider incorporating plants that are native to warmer climates into your summer garden design. She said: "Perennial plants like Lavender, Euphorbia, Heuchera, Pennisetum alopecuroides, and Cosmos are drought-tolerant plants that not only beat the heat but also add a touch of colour to your display." Add mulch after planting to keep your soil full of nutrients In hot weather, adding a thick layer of mulch has many benefits for your plants. Rawson said: "Mulch helps the soil retain moisture, which is essential for plant health during a heatwave. Also, it provides important nutrients that may be lacking in the soil, such as nitrogen and phosphorus." Use natural fertilisers that target root health during the summer months Another way of ensuring your soil is rich with nutrients over the summer months is by using fertilisers. However, "ensure you do not over fertilise the soil during summer, as luscious shrubs may struggle to keep up," the pro warns. Rawson also recommended: "Add natural fertilisers like Mycorrhizal Fungi, these attach themselves to the roots of your plant to create richer root systems".

Wolves not 'stopping there' on sustainability ambitions
Wolves may have already made positive progress in their sustainability ambitions but they know there are still a "huge number of opportunities" to take it impact of climate change is being felt in many different ways and football is not immune to research, external has suggested one in four professional football pitches will be at risk from flooding in 25 so much of the focus is what is happening on the pitch, there is an increasing expectation from supporters that clubs should be doing more to reduce their impact off the second part of our Earth Day chat with Thom Rawson, Wolves' sustainability lead highlighted how important this relationship with fans has been to their One Pack, One Planet sustainability programme."A key part of [developing the strategy] was a fan survey to confirm this is something that fans wanted," Rawson said."The results of that survey told us that around 70-80% of fans agreed it was important for the club to be pursuing and agreed they had an expectation that the club should be acting on sustainability."A similar number also said they supported the idea of having to make changes themselves in support of the club's sustainability ambition."As part of the plan to engage supporters in the One Pack, One Planet work, Wolves have set up a fan focus group for environmental sustainability, similar to those that already existed in areas like ticketing and matchday experience."It [the focus group] gives fans who are interested and proactive on this subject an opportunity to directly shape the direction of travel for the club," Rawson added."It also gives them the chance to engage directly with those who are leading it in different areas of the club."On 9 April, Wolves announced they would be offering supporters a free cycle ride to the club's final four Molineux fixtures - the latest initiative with Transport for West is this kind of work that has been highlighted in their latest sustainability report, external, which Rawson believes shows "the real impact that the sustainability programme is delivering."Annual sustainability reports are a really good opportunity for us to reflect on the success of the programme and how much has been happening over the previous year."However, clearly that doesn't mean that we are stopping there. We know that there are a huge number of opportunities to continue to pursue."

How are Wolves acting on sustainability?
Sustainability in football remains a growing area, but it is one where Wolves want to be "leading the way".In February 2023, the club launched their One Pack, One Planet sustainability programme - a project with four commitments in carbon, waste, nature and culture."The programme is embedded across the club," Wolves sustainability lead Thom Rawson told BBC Sport. "It's within every single department so everyone understands what their role is in delivering against those overarching sustainability ambitions."There has always been good sustainability activities at the club, but the opportunity was there with creating an overriding identity for the sustainability programme, which is what One Pack, One Planet is."Bringing all those activities together creates this common way of thinking about it and a common way of communicating about it with fans so that we can tell a holistic story of how the club is acting on it."Tuesday, 22 April marks Earth Day - a day in the international calendar that provides the opportunity to reflect on progress and understand future opportunities to be more in 2025, two years after the project's launch, Wolves released a progress report, external. Among the highlights of the past 12 months were the reduction in carbon emissions from energy and fuel by 71%, launching a free bus travel scheme for season ticket-holders and the introduction of reusable cups at January, the club also hosted their dedicated One Pack, One Planet focus fixtures for the men's and women's teams, providing an opportunity to introduce a new matchday recycling initiative and raise awareness of the programme and its sustainability work."Fundamentally, the club recognises that it has a responsibility, in terms of its platform, its importance within the local community and within the city of Wolverhampton," Rawson said. "That is the kind of platform that can have an impact nationally, and globally as well."It is the feeling of responsibility combined with wanting to lead and evolving best practice to be seen across the the football industry and to be positioned as a club that is leading and being proactive to do things in the right way."Come back later on Tuesday to find out more about Wolves' sustainability drive

LCS approved for stand alone bus garage
It looks like Lee County Schools will be getting a new bus garage in the near future. During the LCS board meeting on Tuesday, April 8, Superintendent Chris Dossenbach said the district was given approval for the stand-alone facility as opposed to a joint facility with the county that was previously discussed. Dossenbach reported that information from an initial '5 on 5' committee meeting between the two governmental entities from Monday. In addition to him, the meeting included the county manager, county finance team and the school finance director. 'I felt like it was a productive meeting,' Dossenbach said. In an email, LCS spokesman James Alverson noted that the current LCS Bus Garage is located at 416 Cox Maddox Road. It has been in use since November 1974. Funding for the new garage would come during the 2025-26 school year, Dossenbach said. During the 5 on 5 committee meeting, he said he stressed the need for additional classified employee funding, noting that school staff provided information dating back 17 years when salaries were frozen during the Great Recession. Board chair Sherry Lynn Womack asked when the next 5 on 5 meeting would be. Dossenbach said none is currently scheduled, adding that county staff want to get through the budget season first. FORFEITURES Board attorney Stephen Rawson noted that LCS pulled in $75,483 in bond forfeitures from July 1, 2024 through Feb. 28. After questioning from Womack, Rawson added that some of the funding will go to charter schools for Lee County students who attend such. Rawson's fees for culling the funds total $12,822, which he said represent a six-to-one ratio. CELL PHONES Board member Chris Gaster reported on the district's Discipline Committee, noting that although only 5% of the student discipline referrals are for technology, 73% of them come from the middle schools. 'That blew me away because I was thinking it would be high school,' he said, noting there were 286 violations in middle schools. 'This is a bigger problem than people even imagine,' he said, adding that 'a lot of that is from disrespect. It all starts in the home.' Operations Committee chair Alan Rummel noted they also talked about that issue, but noted that more discussion is needed for what to do about it. REDISTRICTING Rummel said the Operations Committee approved using the Institute for Transportation Research and Education out of North Carolina State University for elementary school redistricting. Their study would include 'far more than redistricting,' he said, adding that it would include sites for future school construction, along with other information. During new business, the board approved a contract for $148,558 with Bureau Veritas Technical Assessments of Elliott City, Md. for a facilities condition assessment. The report should be finished by August, according to Rummel. The assessment will be used to drive the district's capital improvement and master facilities plans, according to a board document. GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL During the meeting, Dillon Crockett, the district's science coordinator, announced that two 11th grade students were chosen for the Governor's School for four weeks this summer. Addison Tunnard, a student at Lee Early College, will attend the Governor's School East at Meredith College for social science. Larkin McBryde, a student at Southern Lee High School, will attend the Governor's School West at Greensboro College for natural science.
