Edmonton Oilers top goalie out 'at least a week,' NHL insider reports

Edmonton Oilers goaltender Calvin Pickard is a perfect 4-0 after starting Game 3 of the Western Conference quarterfinal series against the Los Angeles Kings. Pickard will likely start between the pipes when the Oilers begin their series against the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 in Las Vegas. Photo by David Bloom / Postmedia This in from NHL insider Darren Dreger on the Ray & Dregs podcast, news that injured Edmonton Oilers goalie Calvin Pickard will be out for the entire Vegas series. 'Cal Pickard is listed as day-to-day, told that he could be at least a week.' As reported earlier, the Oilers have recalled AHL goalie Collin Delia. Ferraro, a former NHL star, broke down VGK's winning goal against Edmonton in Game 3. He pinpointed multiple mistakes, starting with Kulak and Nurse getting beat to William Karlsson's dump-in play in the corner. 'When the puck went in the corner, like there's three Oilers there, and the Vegas guy gets the puck. So you're already in scramble mode. Like that means there's more people open behind you because you got three guys into that one corner.' As for Reilly Smith's fake shot in the slot, that saw Darnell Nurse, Connor McDavid and Stuart Skinner all go down to block it, Ferraro said, 'That had to be the greatest shot fake in the history of the game because three guys fell down. And if anybody stays on their feet, any of them, the two players and the goalie, it's over. It's an overtime. Like if just one of them stayed on their feet, one of the three, pick whoever you want, somebody would have been able to either poke the puck away.' 'They played that wrong about three different ways.' Vegas has an opportunity ow, Ferraro said. 'And now you've got a chance her, if you're Vegas, if you put together one more. Ii would really feel like momentum of the series would have changed if you go back home two-two.' But Ferraro discounted the notion that the Oilers play differently and better in front of Pickard than they do Skinner. 'What are you going to do (if you're an Oilers play), not try to score? Not try to defend more? … When I was playing, jUI just my own thought, I'd look back there, the guys in net and some nights you go, 'Oh, boy, he's having a tough night. But what the hell am I going to do about it?I can't help him.' Ferraro continued, 'A team is really funny, because as much as you're on this team, 'I can only worry about me. I can't worry about you. If I'm worried about how you're playing the game, then I'm not playing the game. Right.' So the guy in the net, his job's to stop the puck. He's not helping when I'm on the power play. He's not helping me. He doesn't play different because our power play sucks. He would probably like some help. So I don't think teams play differently for other guys. They get better results because the goalie makes the save at the right time, or makes a couple of critical saves at the right time. And that's what I would say Pickard's done better than Skinner in these playoffs. It's not like he's (Pickard) rolling around a 947 save percentage. He just he battles. He seems to make the bigger save at the right time. And as a result, Edmonton has been really successful when he's in… So at some point, Skinner's got to make a couple of those saves. And if he doesn't, the angst isn't going to go away. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman had this to say about Pickard: 'I wanted to shout out Calvin Pickard. It's pretty clear that he won game two, including making about four massive saves at the beginning of overtime (in Game Two vs VGK), while he was far from healthy, Calvin Pickard, not only did he win six in a row, he battled. He really battled. And the last of those ones (saves) came when he was clearly hurt and uncomfortable. We know he won't play Monday night. We'll see after that. 'Skinner has just got to get a W. Doesn't matter where. It can be at home, on the road, or anywhere else you prefer to play. A neutral site, the moon, a different galaxy, needs a W.' My take 1. Dreger is a credible NHL insider on matters such as this. Obviously this is bad news for the Oilers considering how well Pickard has played in the playoffs as opposed to Skinner.
