UK Hiring Freeze Worsens as Cost Increases Bite, Recruiters Say
British employers scaled back hiring further in May in the wake of the sharp tax increases imposed by the Labour government and US President Donald Trump's trade war, according to a closely watched survey. A gauge of permanent staff placements deteriorated to 44.2, falling further below the 50 threshold indicating contraction, the report by the Recruitment & Employment Confederation and KPMG found. Hiring freezes deepened on the back of higher costs and an uncertain outlook, leaving the index below levels when Labour came to power.

Jobs rise defies fears that payroll taxes would drive unemployment
Job vacancies in the UK labour market rose last month, defying fears that a rise in payroll taxes would have an immediate blow on employment from April 1. Latest figures from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, a lobby group for recruiters, show that job postings across the UK grew by 729,000, or 0.4 per cent, between March and April. The figures chime with official data showing that demand for workers has held up even after the government raised national insurance taxes on employers and increased the national living wage from April 1.
