American Red Cross hosts blood drives ahead of summer

The American Red Cross has scheduled blood drives in Pawnee and Payne Counties, seeking to increase the blood supply ahead of summer. 'Emergencies don't take a holiday. As we head into Memorial Day weekend, the American Red Cross urges donors to keep the blood supply top of mind and help save lives by making an appointment to give blood,' the Red Cross wrote in a press release. 'Immediate access to blood products is a key part of summer safety. With millions of Americans expected to travel around Memorial Day and engage in water sports, boating, camping and other outdoor activities, the risk of accidents increases. Though it can be a busy time, making and keeping blood donation appointments remains a critical priority in May during Trauma Awareness Month. 'Type O blood donors and those giving platelets are essential right now to meet the needs of hospitals. Volunteer blood donors can be the light in a patient's recovery, especially accident victims who may require hundreds of blood units through transfusions.' The Payne County blood drives will be noon to 6 p.m. June 2 at the Stillwater Community Center and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 13 at Stillwater Medical Center. The Pawnee County blood drive will be 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Cleveland Community Center, 211 E. Wichita Ave. Appointments can be scheduled at by downloading the Red Cross Blood Donor App or calling 1-800-REDCROSS. 'Those who come to give June 1-30, will get a $15 Gift Card by email and will be automatically entered for a chance to win one of two $7,000 gift cards. Terms apply. Visit the release reads. 'All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. 'Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the Red Cross is to become a volunteer blood donor ambassador at Red Cross blood drives. Blood donor ambassadors help greet, check in and thank blood donors to ensure they have a positive donation experience. Volunteers can also serve as transportation specialists, playing a vital role in ensuring lifesaving blood products are delivered to nearby hospitals. St. Rose of Lima, Young Ladies Institute partner for blood drive

Mar. 20—EPHRATA — St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church is once again uniting its community for a noble cause. On April 16, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Young Ladies Institute and Knights of Columbus will collaborate to host a blood drive at the Ephrata Recreation Center. This annual event aims to bolster the local blood supply, which is persistently in high demand. "This partnership has been going strong for over 30 years," said Jane Montaney, a member of the Young Ladies Institute. "We've always believed in the importance of giving back, and this blood drive perfectly encapsulates the spirit of community service that defines our organizations." The collaboration not only strengthens community bonds but also highlights the pressing need for blood donations, she said, as the Red Cross serves as the primary source of blood for various medical needs, including emergency surgeries and transfusions. As part of their initiative to encourage donors, those who donate blood, platelets or AB Elite plasma during the drive will receive a complimentary classic Red Cross T-shirt, while supplies last. "It's a small token of appreciation that we hope will motivate more people to come out and donate," Montaney said. Additionally, all blood donors in April will be automatically entered into a drawing for a chance to win one of three $5,000 gift cards. For those interested, further details regarding the contest can be found at The Ephrata Recreation Center has become a familiar venue for blood drives, often hosting similar events to cater to community needs. "We encourage everyone to come out and donate, whether you schedule an appointment or decide to walk in," Montaney explained. "It's important for everyone to understand that each donation can make a significant difference." She said potential donors should prepare for their blood donation by adopting a healthy diet in the lead-up to the event. "Did you know that orange juice is a good source of iron? It's a simple way to prepare your body for giving blood," she said. For those wanting to secure a spot in advance, appointments can be made by calling 1-800-733-2767 or visiting and entering "EphrataCommunity." While pre-scheduling is strongly encouraged to help streamline the process, walk-ins are also welcome. Montaney, reflecting on the significance of donating blood, shared a personal story that underscores its impact. "My eldest daughter underwent several surgeries and required multiple blood transfusions," she said. "At one point, the amount of blood she needed exceeded what a normal body holds as she lost it just as quickly as it was administered. If it weren't for the generosity of blood donors, she might not have received the care she needed." The blood drive is not only an opportunity to give blood, she said, but also a place for community members to come together and support one another. After donating, participants can enjoy a complimentary lunch, ensuring they replenish their energy post-donation. "We want everyone who donates to feel appreciated and cared for," Montaney said. "Our goal is not just to collect blood; it's to foster a strong sense of community." Both organizations are committed to raising awareness about the ongoing need for blood donations. "Every bit counts, and we urge everyone in the community to think about how they can help," Montaney said. "It's a small commitment of time that can mean so much to someone in need." Blood Drive Ephrata Recreation Center 112 Basin St. Southwest, Ephrata April 16 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pre-register by calling 1-800-733-2767 or visiting and entering "EphrataCommunity."

Red Cross urges donations for disaster relief on Giving Day

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Indiana Region of the American Red Cross is asking people to donate on Red Cross Giving Day, March 26, to ensure no one faces disaster alone. During the first 50 days of 2025, the Red Cross said, volunteers responded to more big disasters in the U.S. than days in the year. In Indiana, this included winter weather in January and recent severe weather this month. Due to this severe weather in 2024, more Red Cross blood donations have gone uncollected, according to a press release. Red Cross holds blood drive in Marshall As we enter spring disaster season, the Red Cross is asking people to make a financial donation or give blood to help families and individuals who may need future assistance due to a disaster. Here's how you can help. Donations will be part of the Red Cross Giving Day, which aims to rally 30,000 individuals to help people affected by a disaster. Donations can be any size big or small, the Red Cross said any sized gift makes a difference. 'A gift of any size makes a difference. For example, a donation of $3 can provide a comfort kit with supplies like a toothbrush, comb and shampoo, and a gift of $11 can provide a nutritious meal, snack and drink.' The Indiana Region of the American Red Cross Donate today to help Red Cross efforts across 10 states To help overcome the significant weather impact on blood donations, the Red Cross is urging people to make an appointment and give lifesaving blood. People of all blood types are needed to help avoid further strain on the blood supply. Deshun Avery: Honoring West Texas community heroes during Red Cross Month

This March, we are proud to honor fellow West Texans during our annual Red Cross Month celebration, which started more than 80 years ago with a proclamation signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Last year, in the Panhandle Plains Chapter, which encompasses 44 counties, including our own Hockley County, Red Crossers assisted 194 families after a disaster, helped more than 512 area military community members and provided first aid, CPR and AED training to more than 4,390 people. During the month of March, the Red Cross is offering free A1C testing (commonly used to screen for prediabetes and diabetes) on blood, platelet and plasma donations. Visit for full details.
