Clark County School District opens new preschool

WINCHESTER, Ky. (FOX 56) — For the last few years, school officials in Clark County have been working on a project aimed at setting generations of future Cardinals up for success. From planning to designing to building, the new Clark County Preschool is officially open to students. The students are aged three through five. Now, think back to when you were that age, the excitement you had for going to school, and the sense of joy and wonder each day brought. While students will be getting the foundations for a good education here, they're also going to get to be kids. 'The day that we opened the doors was a dream come true,' described Principal Jillian Blanton. 'I actually become a little emotional because we have fought so hard for this.' Most educational journeys start with preschool, and for educators in Clark County, it is that start to the journey that's so important to start off on the right foot. Lexington woman allegedly pocketed over $56K from 145 forged checks The American Red Cross is asking for Lexington's help on Red Cross Giving Day Clark County School District opens new preschool 'It lays the foundation for all of our students and faculty, and we could not be more thrilled and excited to open up this building and be able to provide these opportunities for our children here in Clark County,' explained Assistant Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer for the district Kelly Fithen. The fight to get this new preschool was not an easy one. 'It was three facilities committee meetings,' Blanton explained. 'Arguing, fighting for what our early childhood education is and how important it is for our community, for our students. Because with early childhood education, you are preventing the gap. So, getting individuals to understand that we are preventing the gap, instead of focusing so much on how we close those gaps, we got to start focusing on how we prevent gaps from even occurring in early childhood education.' With some strong early reviews, it's safe to say the kids love the new building, and why wouldn't they? Every detail was built with them in mind, regardless of where they may be in their development. 'Sixty-seven percent of our population is served based on a disability, so it's truly vital for us to keep in mind all students here at Clark County Preschool,' Blanton said. 'So, we may serve students who may be still utilizing walkers, or maybe they just haven't quite caught on the walking experience yet. We have students who are in wheelchairs, and then we have students who could climb to the top of the tower [on the playground] if they wanted to.' Classrooms are split into four sections, or neighborhoods, based on Kentucky landmarks: Red River Gorge, Daniel Boone National Forest, Cumberland Lake, and the Kentucky Bluegrass. 'I really feel like, intentionality has been key in creating and building this building in particular,' Fithen said. Within each classroom neighborhood, there will also be a little walking track, crash pad, and swing set that should a kid need to get a little energy out. There will also be instructional areas which teachers can do more interactive lessons in. While creating a warm and welcoming environment for the students is of the utmost importance, creating a positive relationship with the families of the kids is also really important. 'We know how important it is to make sure that our relationships with our families are strong and that they are, successful relationships because if we can't work together, then we can't really maximize the progress of our students, which is the most important thing a student can make,' Blanton said. So, what's next? What does the district have in store? Read more of the latest Lexington & central Kentucky news 'We're truly growing greatness here in Clark County,' Fithen said. 'From our youngest learners and from our little cards and right up to our cardinals, we are truly growing greatness across the district, and it all starts here.' Now the school isn't completely done just yet; they're still working on finishing up the media center. But right now it's full steam ahead starting the educational journey for the future of Clark County. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Red Cross calls on Pennsylvania donors ahead of ‘Giving Day'

(WTAJ) — As the Red Cross Giving Day grows closer, the nonprofit is asking residents across Pennsylvania to consider donating blood. The Giving Day is scheduled for March 26 and comes after weather-related disasters and emergencies in places such as California and Kentucky took over the first two months of 2025. On top of that, the Red Cross highlighted how local emergencies such as house fires and car crashes also call for a demand for blood donation. 'This year's disasters have set a whirlwind pace, displacing thousands of people from their homes across the country and disrupting the nation's blood supply for patients,' Jorge Martinez, CEO of the American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania, said. 'As we enter spring disaster season, families are relying on us to come together as a community and support them when help can't wait during future crises. Join us today by making a financial donation or giving blood or platelets.' People of all blood types are needed, and those looking to donate at a center near them can sign up to do so on the Red Cross website. The nonprofit noted that it is also taking donations so it can continue building 'comfort kits' that include things such as a toothbrush, comb and shampoo. Additionally, anyone who donates blood, platelets or plasma during March will receive a $10 Amazon Gift Card by email. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
