Memorial High students head to global fair with winning AI project
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Local high school students are taking their science skills to a global level after winning big at the Red River Science and Engineering Fair. Now they've been selected to compete at one of the most prestigious science competitions in the world. Stamp Out Hunger drive to collect food in Wichita Falls area, nationwide Evan Liang, Jimin and Jun Park are students at Memorial High School who developed a project that uses artificial intelligence to detect hand gestures for prosthetic devices. It was so impressive that it earned them an invitation to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Columbus Ohio to show the world what they've created. Their project focuses on improving prosthetic limb function through AI and electromyogram signals. It stood out among dozens at the Red River Regional Science and Engineering Fair at Midwestern State University, and now Red River is paying for the students to go to Ohio to present it on a global stage shared by some of the brightest young minds in science. Their project uses deep learning algorithms and non-invasive electromyogram signals to detect hand gestures. The Park brothers said not only will this help them in the fields they plan to pursue going forward, but they also have hopes this technology could help improve the way many people use prosthetics, including their grandfather. 'We have a grandfather who is an amputee, and we understand how difficult it is for him to apply the prosthetic and how awkward it is for him to move around. So, our research in this field of electric limbs and bionic arms can potentially help people like our grandfather', said Jun Park. The team said they're proud to be representing Wichita Falls and hope their work can spark real-world change. The students will head to Ohio for the science fair the week of May 11, joining students from across the globe to present their research in hopes of bringing home the $100,000 grand prize. MSU hosts 2025 Red River Regional Science and Engineering Fair
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — It was a packed house inside the Clark Student Center at Midwestern State University for the annual Red River Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Some of these students are competing for major bragging rights and are moving forward to the international science and engineering fair in Columbus, Ohio, as Texoma representatives. Nominate a family member or friend for 'Hometown Heroes' Woodland Elementary fourth graders Jack Armstrong and Cooper Epperson from Graham are two small kids with a really big idea. 'The project that we have chosen is a Gauss Rifle. It's focusing on magnetic propulsion. So, you know, Newton cradles how the kinetic energy transfers from one ball to the other. It's a kind of energy transfer. But the magnet, the neodymium magnets, they act as accelerators,' Cooper and Epperson said. Their project is part of the 2025 Red River Regional Science and Engineering Fair, a competition that Red River Science Fair President Jessica Mitchell said has a big impact on the future of some of these kids' lives. 'It could be any topic we've had here to win the international science fair, not here, but the international science fair with paper scissors. We have kids this year that are researching, prosthetic leg. They built a prosthetic leg. And we have the little ones are doing like buoyancy and density studies. Baseball bats how well they hand. So just about anything you can think of, you can study for the science fair,' Mitchell said. Mitchell said the younger elementary school kids are competing for some in-house prizes. But the middle school and high school winners will move on to the next phase of the competition. 'Middle school can go to the Texas State Science and Engineering Fair at Texas A&M, and our top winner for the high school division is to go to the international Science Engineering fair in Columbus, Ohio, for a week, all expenses paid,' Mitchell said. Something that Armstrong and Epperson are hoping to do in the future. 'That's when we start moving up, that's when we start going bigger,' Cooper and Epperson said. A goal these young engineers are aiming for just a few years from now The Texas State Science and Engineering Fair will kick off on March 28th at Texas A&M for the middle school winners. The high school winners moving on to the International Science and Engineering Fair will be heading to Columbus, Ohio, from May 10th through the 16th.
