Generational change in electorates ‘limiting' Nationals' election ambitions

Redbridge Group Director Simon Welsh claims generation is more important than geography in elections. 'Not for a second suggesting that the Nationals are about to start losing seats because of this sort of attitudinal predisposition, but I think it kind of limits ... the Nationals' ambitions,' he told Sky News Australia. 'Nationals tend to do well in seats that are older and seats that are getting older, so that's characteristic of a lot of regional Australia, just broadly.'

‘Fairly significant problem': The Coalition will face new challenges after historic defeat

Redbridge Group Director Kos Samaras says the Coalition will face new challenges, including the possibility of an Opposition leader without a capital city seat, and a new wave of Gen Z voters. 'The Coalition's being pushed out of most capital cities … their next leader will possibly, won't even be a leader that actually holds a seat in a major capital city,' Mr Samaras said. 'That's a fairly significant problem because, well, we're a very open eyes country. 'There'll be more Gen Z enrolled to vote in the next three years, and again, this is probably one of the worst demographic groups for the Coalition.'

Minor party voters' preferences ‘instrumental' to Labor Party's election dominance

Redbridge Group Director Kos Samaras says the 6 million Australians who voted for minor parties but preferenced the Labor Party were 'instrumental' in Labor's federal election victory. 'The 6 million or so Australians that voted for other parties, their preferences were quite instrumental when delivering the Albanese government a massive win,' Mr Samaras said. 'Not only, obviously, did we see an increase in the Labor primary, but also that preference flow was absolutely significant to Labor. 'It's very clear that all the votes that the Coalition lost over the last eight to nine weeks to minor parties, those Australians decided to actually preference the Labor Party.'

Victorian seat of Hawke reported to have ‘big swings' against Labor

Redbridge Group Director Kos Samaras says the Victorian seat of Hawke has reported 'big swings' against Labor. 'If you would have told me 20 years ago that the Coalition would be having a major campaign in Melton, I would have thought that you are crazy,' Mr Samaras said. 'That is the fact now, and it's the reality that Labor has to face, and that is, is it a manifestation of the Victorian government, yeah, in part sure, but I think what has been going on in Melbourne's western suburbs is in the making for over a decade. 'Hawke has consistently reported very big swings against Labor in all our research.'

Coalition ‘losing' votes to third parties and independents

Redbridge Group Director Simon Welsh discusses the 'loss of altitude' in the Liberal primary vote as the election closely approaches. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have paused their election campaigning for today following the death of Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88. 'Where the Liberals are losing the vote, a big chunk of that we know is going to third parties and independents,' Mr Welsh told Sky News Australia. 'You would think that kind of plays in Kooyong's favour.'
