San Bernardino County teacher arrested for alleged sex abuse of a minor
A San Bernardino County teacher was arrested for the alleged sex abuse of a minor. The suspect was identified as Elvin Vereau, 52, by the Redlands Unified School District. Vereau was a temporary Special Academic Instruction teacher at Citrus Valley High School in Redlands. District officials said Vereaur was initially employed as a paraprofessional from 2013 to 2022 before transitioning into a teaching role from 2022 to 2023. He began working at Citrus Valley High in the 2023-2024 school year. Riverside police began investigating after a minor reported being sexually abused. On May 13, following an investigation, Vereau was located by officers and taken into custody in connection with the case. After learning of the arrest, district officials said Vereau was placed on administrative leave pending further investigation. 'Our top priority is, and always will be, the safety and well-being of our students,' said Superintendent Juan Cabral in a statement. 'Every employee must pass a series of background checks, including a Department of Justice check, prior to starting to work with our students.' Details surrounding the case, including Vereau's connection to the alleged victims, were not released. His booking photo was not provided by authorities. 'We appreciate the swift action taken by the Riverside Police Department and are committed to ensuring that any student who may have been affected receives the support and services they need,' Cabral said. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Riverside Police Department at 951-354-2007. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. California school board votes to keep trans athletes out of girls' sports
A southern California school board voted to keep transgender athletes out of girls' sports on Tuesday night. The Redlands Unified school board voted in favor of adopting the policy, 3-2. The school district is located in San Bernardino County. Board president Michelle Rendler, along with members Candy Olson and Jeanette Wilson, voted in favor of the policy. "I am just so grateful that this insanity had not entered into society when I was growing up," Olson said, via the Redlands Daily Facts. "If people think there is no difference between men and women, they are denying science," she added. Together for Redlands executive Trisha Keeling said during the meeting there were no transgender athletes in the school district and accused Olson and Wilson of trying to create a problem. "Redlands should not and cannot stand for this form of discrimination," she said. The school district joined Chino Valley in its decision to keep transgender athletes out of girls' sports. Chino Valley passed a similar policy and a recent board meeting in that district got out of hand with protesters chanting "Hail Satan!" at one point. Chino Valley school board president Sonja Shaw was at the Redlands' meeting to support the policy. "It is not controversial, it is common sense," Shaw said. "We are here to make common sense common again." A bipartisan survey by the Public Policy Institute of California found the majority of California residents oppose biological male trans athletes competing in women's sports. That figure included more than 70% of the state's school parents. "Most Californians support requiring transgender athletes to compete on teams matching the sex they were assigned at birth," the poll stated. "Solid majorities of adults (65%) and likely voters (64%) support requiring that transgender athletes compete on teams that match the sex they were assigned at birth, not the gender they identify with. An overwhelming majority of public school parents (71%) support such a requirement." Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Redlands Unified school board votes in favor of rule targeting transgender athletes
The Brief The Redlands Unified school board voted 3-2 to ban transgender girls from participating in girls' sports, joining Chino Valley in adopting similar policies. It remains uncertain if California Governor Gavin Newsom will oppose Redlands Unified's decision, as he did with Chino Valley's policy in 2024. SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. - The Redlands Unified school board has voted to ban transgender girls from playing sports with other girls. A meeting was held Tuesday, April 22 to discuss the then-proposed measure. The policy ended up passing on a 3-2 vote. With the vote, Redlands Unified joins Chino Valley as Southern California-based school districts with a similar policy. Chino Valley made headlines in 2024 after the school board voted to let teachers inform parents when a student asks to be addressed by a different pronoun for a sex other than their assigned gender at birth. What we don't know When Chino Valley voted to let teachers out students of their pronoun changes to their parents, California Governor Gavin Newsom battled with the school district over the policy in 2024. As of Tuesday, April 22, it is unknown if the Governor will implement a similar measure against Redlands Unified.
