Mom wants answers after Miami rapper gunned downed in Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The mother of a rising rapper who was gunned down in Memphis wants to know why he was killed and wants police to catch all the people responsible. Toya Redwing is talking for the first time about her son's death on March 22 near the FedEx Forum. 1 dead, 1 injured in shooting downtown Letorian Hunt, 27, also known as Sayso P, was shot and killed outside the Westin Hotel. Houston Rapper Sauce Walka, whose real name is Albert Walker Mondane, was also wounded when at least three people jumped out of a white Charger and opened fire. Redwing said her son was born and raised in Memphis but lived in Miami. He was in town to visit a sick relative and had been looking forward to coming home. He had only been at the hotel a couple of days before the shooting. 'I want to know who did this. I want to know who sent them. This is what I told the detectives. These boys didn't do this on their own, at least I don't think so,' said Redwing. 'I don't think he was the intended target.' Shortly after the shooting, the 2021 Dodge Charger 392 Scat Pack was recovered, and police issued a warrant for Jayden Dandridge, 21, for first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder. Last week, Dandridge was found dead in Houston. His death was ruled a homicide. 'I was pretty much numb. I didn't cry or grieve for him. He killed my son, and I still want answers,' Redwing said. 'I can't get to the bottom of it if they are all dead.' Redwing said her son wanted to leave Memphis because of the violence. She said he had opened a recording studio in Miami and recently signed a distribution deal with Sauce Walka's record label. Suspect in downtown Memphis shooting found dead in Houston: MPD She said Hunt was kind and generous, always had a smile on his face, and was finally realizing his dreams. Redwing said her son was her best friend, and the pain of his loss has been unlike anything she has experienced before. 'The fact that he won't ever have children. I won't know what my grandkids look like. I won't know if he will have beautiful little daughters or little boys,' said Redwing. 'Watching his growth from a young boy to the man he had become was amazing.' Redwing said Memphis police are currently outmanned and outgunned. She hopes the FBI will step in, as promised, to help, but believes people in the community also need to get involved to stop the crime. The rapper's mom said she would like to start a foundation to help other mothers dealing with the same kind of grief. She also wants to provide resources to young people who are falling through the cracks and committing these acts of violence. 'I've heard, why do you care about them. Screw them. Those people killed your kid,' said Redwing. 'I can't say that with a straight face and be me. They need to be held accountable, but I do know a lot of these kids want a way out.' Redwing said she wants to do something to keep her son's memory alive and show that his life mattered. Hunt was buried at sea in Miami. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Visually impaired horse given new home at Redwings in Norfolk
An animal sanctuary has given a permanent home to a visually impaired horse. Smokey, who suffers from an eye condition called uveitis, was moved to the Redwings Horse Sanctuary near Long Stratton in Norfolk after his owners realised they could not meet his 22-year-old stallion has to wear a mesh mask to keep his eyes clear of debris."We were grateful that his owners were receptive to the help," said Jude Palmer, who works at one of the Redwings sanctuaries. "Smokey's had some TLC and is now on eye drops three times a day."We'd always rather proactively get in there and help rather than let it get to a point where he was suffering." Redwings has other sanctuaries - including Smokey's new home in Hapton village - and claims to be the UK's largest horse welfare year, the charity homed 104 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules across the has become the face of Redwing's Ready to Rescue Campaign. Memphians seek alternatives to avoid state takeover of MSCS board
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphians who opposed two MSCS takeover bills in the Tennessee General Assembly are now floating their own ideas to keep the state from moving in. As the debate continues to reach a feverish pitch over bills calling for a takeover or makeover of the MSCS school board, WREG is learning about local alternative plans to Senator Brent Taylor and Rep. Mark White's proposals. 'It's not a state takeover once again. It's made up of nine Shelby County people who are experts in education that can lead us forward,' said Mark White. 'We deserve better than what we're getting': Lawmaker shares more about bill to take over MSCS This week, WREG obtained a letter from Shelby County Commissioner Erika Sugarmon sent to the Shelby County Delegation proposing what she calls an alternative solution to the bills. On Wednesday at 'WREG at 3 PM,' Sugarmon said that she'd like to explore possibly rescinding the County Commission's No Confidence vote of the school board. 'What I'm hearing from people if the county commission rescinds the no-confidence, then that doesn't give the state the right,' said Sugarmon. 'So, I have to talk to legal to see if that is correct.' House bill for state control of MSCS advances Sugarmon plans to create a locally appointed oversight board selected by the Shelby County Commission and Memphis City Council. She also proposes amendments to the Shelby County Charter allowing the county commission to put two referendums on the 2026 ballot regarding the school board. 'What we're trying to do is listen to the people. People wanted term limits for the school board and they wanted recall. So, we ask the state to give us that ability by changing our charter,' said Sugarmon. MSCS board members call state takeover bill 'attack on democracy' This week, several Memphians traveled to Nashville to voice their opposition to the takeover bills. Ron Redwing and Save Our Students are proposing their alternative plan. 'This board would be appointed by the Shelby County Commission, and they would have oversight over that board,' said Redwing. Redwing who also appeared on 'WREG at 3 PM' said that he also wants to hold Shelby County Commissioners accountable for triggering a possible state takeover. 'We're not asking, but we are demanding that the Shelby County Commission rescind their votes and we're especially demanding that those democrats who voted the No Confidence vote for this school board be held accountable,' said Redwing. Some members of 'Save our Students' and other stakeholders say they plan on traveling back to Nashville next week to meet with state lawmakers about the MSCS takeover bills.
