Advertisement Afrikaans-language news website Netwerk24 on Wednesday reported Pistorius' participation in the Ironman 70.3 competition. Netwerk24 cited an unnamed source as saying that Pistorius had permission from his parole officer to compete. Conrad Dormehl, a lawyer for Pistorius, confirmed to Reuters that Pistorius had participated in the Durban race. Singabakho Nxumalo, spokesperson of South Africa's Department of Correctional Services, said he did not know whether Pistorius had received permission to compete, but would find out and respond to questions sent by Reuters. He said his parole officer would have needed to approve him travelling from where he lives to another district. Oscar Pistorius makes his return to sport: Blade Runner is seen competing in triathlon 12 years after murdering Reeva Steenkamp

Oscar Pistorius completed a triathlon in his native South Africa this week as he readjusts to public life after being released from prison on parole last year. The 38-year-old former professional sprinter completed the Isuzu Ironman 70.3 competition in Durban on Sunday, June 1 in 5:56:39. Pistorius competed in the triathlon under race number 105, coming 555th among all participants and third in the 'physically challenged' category, per SportSplits. Netwerk24 cited an unnamed source as saying that Pistorius had permission from his parole officer to compete. Conrad Dormehl, an attorney for Pistorius, confirmed he had participated in the race. Singabakho Nxumalo, spokesperson of South Africa's Department of Correctional Services, said his parole officer would have needed to approve him travelling from where he lives to another district. Pistorius, dubbed 'Blade Runner' for his prosthetic legs, was released on parole last year after serving nine years behind bars for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp. In a case that shocked the world, the Paralympian shot and killed the 29-year-old model through a locked bathroom door on Valentine's Day in 2013. He repeatedly said he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder and launched multiple appeals against his conviction on that basis. Pistorius was freed from jail in January 2024 after completing more than half his sentence and is on parole until his sentence expires in 2029. The 38-year-old is now keeping a low profile at his uncle's plush multi-million pound home in Pretoria. Ahead of the triathlon on June 1, sources close to the Paralympian said that Pistorius was focusing on getting back into form. Mark Williams-Thomas, a detective-turned-broadcaster who remains in regular contact with Pistorius, told the Daily Telegraph earlier this year that 'he knows how important it is to keep fit and stay healthy'. 'When he came out [of prison], he was a shadow of himself,' he said. 'In the first early days, I would speak to him and he was just profoundly exhausted, mentally and physically. He is much better now.' Pistorius was also said to have been volunteering at a local church, where he sweeps floors, and has also launched a new charity. He was said to have dating business consultant Rita Greyling, the daughter of millionaire parents who have been friends with the Pistorius family for decades. Sources told MailOnline in December last year that Pistorius is 'besotted with her'. The Blade Runner never saw his disability as a hindrance to his life, and spent much of his early life playing a range of sports Pistorius, who has not confessed to murder, still has years left on parole and is not allowed to drink alcohol or handle guns. He must also keep out of Pretoria and Johannesburg nightclubs and live a reflective and reclusive a life as possible under its terms. He is visited on random days and times by parole officers from South Africa's Department of Correctional Services who check on him to see that he is keeping out of trouble, MailOnline reported last year. And he was undergoing anger management sessions to curb violent behaviour. Pistorius was ultimately given 13 years and five months in prison by South Africa's Court of Appeal in 2017, more than double his original sentence of six years. He was initially convicted of culpable homicide in 2014, before prosecutors pursued a murder charge. Pistorius has denied that he murdered Ms Steenkamp. He argued that in the early hours of that morning in 2013, he shot through the door because he believed an intruder had broken in. He fired four bullets through the locked door of a bathroom in his plush Pretoria home, three of which hit Reeva and caused mortal wounds. Pistorius was convicted of her murder in 2016.
