Illinois lawmaker urges Trump to relocate USDA from D.C. to the Midwest

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — An Illinois legislator is urging President Donald Trump to move the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) out of Washington and into the heartland. was introduced by Rep. Regan Deering (R-Decatur). 'The hardworking farmers and ranchers of this country feed the United States, yet the bureaucrats of Washington, D.C., who control agriculture policy are out of touch with the realities of rural America,' the resolution reads. It goes on to say that the USDA should 'be located where the real work of American agriculture happens; rather than be based in the 'swamp' of Washington, D.C., the department should be in the heartland of the United States, among the farmers, agribusinesses, and rural communities that keep this country running.' The resolution advocates for the Bloomington-Normal and Decatur area as a proposed location for the USDA, as they are 'at the center of the action.' According to the text, the Strategic Withdrawal of Agencies of Meaningful Placement (SWAMP) Act, introduced in Congress, seeks to move agencies away from Washington and 'into the heartland, closer to the people they impact the most.' 'That is something the president and the Department of Government Efficiency is working towards, streamlining our agencies, decreasing the bloat. Many of my constituents here in Illinois are all for that,' Deering . Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
