'Landmark moment' hailed by Scotch whisky industry

For an industry that continues to face so much uncertainty with regard to US tariffs, it was a welcome breakthrough. Indeed, as noted in one of Business Voices columns in The Herald, the Scotch Whisky Association responded to the signing of the UK-India free trade agreement with unrestrained joy. Chief executive Mark Kent hailed the deal as a 'once in a generation deal and a landmark moment for Scotch whisky' which has the potential to increase exports to India by £1 billion over the next five years, and help the industry create a further 1,200 jobs across the UK. My column noted: 'There is certainly no doubt the deal has come at a crucial time for the Scotch whisky industry. Over the last couple of years, distillers have seen sales come under pressure in key markets such as the US and China as a range of geopolitical and macroeconomic challenges have undermined demand.' However, the article emphasised that it was important to not get carried away with regard to the potential of the UK-India deal. 'The breakthrough in India will certainly help the sector in the long run, but it would perhaps be naïve to think that every Scotch whisky distiller will benefit, with the bigger players tending to find it easier to succeed in exports market than their smaller counterparts,' the piece stated. 'Moreover, even by year 10 of the new free trade deal, Scotch whisky exporters will still face tariffs of 40% in India. Read more: 'However, the new accord with India is certainly a step in the right direction in a highly uncertain world.' The hospitality industry in Glasgow was in the spotlight in May too. As I reported exclusively in The Herald, Regent Property Group has lodged a planning application for what is proposed to be the first Radisson apart-hotel in the UK in the city of Glasgow. Regent is proposing to develop the new-build concept on the site of several dilapidated buildings, including the former Fury Murry's nightclub at 90-96 Maxwell Street, and heralded the plans as an opportunity to help 'revitalise' the St Enoch area. Jay Singh, director of Glasgow-based Regent, said he approached Radisson with the concept after witnessing the growing popularity of apart-hotels in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Asked what has given Regent the confidence to invest in Glasgow in the current climate, Mr Singh told The Herald: 'We are a long-established Glasgow family business, we love Glasgow, and we want to invest in our city. 'We appreciate there are concerns about the city centre but there are a lot of exciting projects that have the potential to transform the city – and we believe our Maxwell Street project is one of them.' Adela Cristea, vice-president of business development for the UK, Ireland and Nordics at Radisson Hotel Group, highlighted the impact made by the Radisson RED hotel on the banks of the River Clyde, next to the OVO Hydro, as a key factor in its decision to bring the apart-hotel concept to the city. Coincidentally, Regent's move to lodge the planning application was quickly followed by news of Forrest Group, owner of the city's popular Radisson RED Hotel, reaching a milestone in its latest project in the city. Forrest released footage of the newly restored cupola being lowered into position on the North Rotunda which it is in the process of transforming into a live music and wedding venue. The cupola, a recreation of the original feature, was handcrafted from oak and lead at a cost of £100,000. As I noted in a Business Voices column, these projects contributed a growing sense that Glasgow is finally beginning to show signs of making a real recovery from the many challenges whose arose from the pandemic period. 'In isolation, it would be wrong to overstate the impact that individual projects such as the proposed Radisson apart-hotel and North Rotunda music venue will have on the overall economy of the city,' I wrote. 'But what they do signal is that successful business people can see a brighter future for Glasgow beyond the malaise that has dogged the city and are prepared to underpin that sentiment with serious investment.'

IHG, GI Capital begin construction of Regent hotel in Kyoto

IHG Hotels & Resorts, in partnership with GI Capital Management, has revealed the start of construction on the Regent property in Kyoto, Japan, with a formal groundbreaking event. Featuring 83 rooms, the hotel is scheduled to welcome guests in 2028. It aims to offer a contemporary luxury experience while incorporating elements of the region's rich historical and cultural backdrop. GI Capital Management managing partner and CEO James Lee said: 'The groundbreaking ceremony is a special day for the team and a wonderful milestone for Kyoto. We are proud to bring the Regent brand to life, reflecting the timeless beauty of Kyoto, in this serene, beautiful and historic location in partnership with IHG. 'Complementing Kyoto's cultural and historical legacy, we are creating a truly special experience that redefines the meaning of luxury in this remarkable city.' Situated in the Okazaki area, the hotel's proximity to cultural landmarks like the Kyoto Imperial Palace, Heian Shrine, and Nanzen-ji Temple positions it as a destination for visitors. The guest rooms will offer a modern take on the traditional 'engawa' zone, allowing for a garden experience. IHG Hotels & Resorts Japan & Micronesia managing director Abhijay Sandilya said: 'It's wonderful to see the momentum behind upper luxury brand Regent globally, and today we celebrate another exciting chapter for Regent following the groundbreaking in Kyoto, the cultural capital of Japan. 'There's a strong opportunity for growth in the luxury and lifestyle segment in Japan and IHG's brands in this space, given affluent domestic and international travellers are looking for one-of-a-kind experiences, thoughtful service and the opportunity to discover new destinations.' Regent Hotels & Resorts, acquired by IHG in 2018, is set to expand its luxury footprint with the new property in Kyoto, joining other properties worldwide. These properties include Regent Hong Kong, Regent Santa Monica Beach, Regent Phu Quoc, Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel, Regent Shanghai on the Bund and Regent Bali Canggu. IHG currently operates 54 hotels across Japan under ten different brands and has 17 more in development. In a strategic move, IHG expanded its Vignette Collection brand into the Japanese market in April 2025, signified by the rebranding of RIHGA Royal Hotel Osaka, further solidifying its presence in the region. Virginia Republican candidate for governor addresses grads at extremely anti-LGBTQ+ schools

Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, now the Republican nominee for governor, continues to cement her far-right platform with appearances at two schools that openly denounce LGBTQ+ people and reproductive freedom. Her commencement speech at Regent University and an upcoming one at Atlantic Shores Christian School, a private pre-k through 12 institution, are the latest signals that she is not moderating her views for a general election campaign — she's leaning in. Keep up with the latest in + news and politics. Regent's official doctrine affirms that marriage exists only between one man and one woman and opposes abortion in nearly all cases, asserting that life begins at conception. Its facilities may not be used for anything deemed inconsistent with its interpretation of biblical teachings, including affirming same-sex relationships or transgender identities. Regents holds that abortion is 'tantamount to murder.' The school's Christian Community and Mission Policy, approved by its board of trustees in 2023, defines the school as a Christian ministry where every employee is a commissioned minister and every activity, academic or otherwise, is considered an act of worship. The school's policies prohibit 'homosexual conduct,' which they categorize alongside 'pornography, premarital sex, adultery,' and 'lewd, indecent, or obscene conduct,' and require all student leaders and employees to adhere to its biblical code of sexual ethics strictly. Earlier this month, Earle-Sears spoke at Regent University, where she earned an M.A. in 2003. The late televangelist and longtime anti-LGBTQ+ firebrand Pat Robertson founded the school in 1977. Related: Winsome Earle-Sears: The anti-LGBTQ+ ultraconservative Republican trying to replace Virginia's governor Robertson, who launched the school in 1977, didn't just preach it — he politicized it. He infamously blamed 'abortionists, feminists, gays and lesbians' for the 9/11 attacks, saying America had invited God's wrath. These beliefs remain embedded in the culture and code of the university where Earle-Sears chose to deliver a celebratory address. Earle-Sears is scheduled to stand at the podium again on June 6 — this time at Atlantic Shores Christian School in Chesapeake, another institution whose statement of faith declares that homosexuality and bisexuality are 'sinful and prohibited.' These are not isolated incidents. They are consistent with Earle-Sears' long record of pushing anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and policy. Last year, she wrote a personal note of moral opposition on HB174, a bill passed by the General Assembly to prohibit marriage discrimination, Washington, D.C., NBC affiliate WRC reports. The bill protects couples from being denied a license based on sex, gender, or race. Earle-Sears, required by her state constitutional role to sign it, instead added a handwritten message declaring her personal opposition. Related: Virginia lieutenant governor offers awkward 'apology' after misgendering trans lawmaker Danica Roem Her campaign has also made national headlines for an incendiary fundraising email comparing DEI programs to slavery. 'Slaves did not die in the fields so that we could call ourselves victims now,' the email read. The campaign did not disavow the language. Video from 2023 shows her delivering the same message aloud, Politico reports. At the same time, the state GOP is embroiled in a separate identity crisis. John Reid, Virginia's first out gay Republican nominee for lieutenant governor, has accused Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin's political operation of attempting to force him off the ticket. Reid alleges Youngkin's PAC offered to suppress opposition research in exchange for his withdrawal — claims Youngkin has not addressed. Earle-Sears canceled joint events with Reid. Last year, Earle-Sears apologized after she misgendered Sen. Danica Roem, the first out transgender state senator in Virginia. Virginia currently has some of the strongest LGBTQ+ protections in the South.

ADNOC L&S, Regent to trial high-speed electric seagliders

ADNOC Logistics and Services (ADNOC L&S), a global energy maritime logistics leader, has selected US-based Regent's electric seaglider for a proof-of-concept trial to assess the craft's suitability for transporting personnel to and from offshore energy infrastructure. The announcement was made at the 'Make it in the Emirates' event, currently taking place in Abu Dhabi. Regent's 'Viceroy' seaglider – a next-generation maritime craft – combines the speed of an aircraft with the convenience of a boat, offering high-speed, zero-emission transport. The proof-of-concept is the first phase in a potential multi-stage deployment that could see the technology incorporated more widely across ADNOC L&S's offshore logistics operations. Regent will manufacture its electric seagliders in the UAE. It will also provide aftermarket services such as maintenance, boosting local manufacturing capabilities and strengthening the UAE's industrial base. The proof-of-concept trial will also be managed by a UAE-based seaglider operator, delivering additional in-country value and positioning the UAE as a hub for advanced maritime innovation. ADNOC L&S Chief Executive Captain Abdulkareem Al Masabi said the group was committed to adopting innovative technologies that enhance the safety, sustainability and efficiency of its operations. "This proof-of-concept trial with Regent's seagliders marks an important milestone in our journey to decarbonise offshore logistics, while supporting 'Make it in the Emirates' through the development of future-ready maritime capabilities in the UAE," he noted. The Viceroy can carry up to 12 passengers or 1,600 kg of cargo and is capable of speeds up to 300 km per hour for routes up to 300km. Its ability to operate in multiple modes - floating, foiling and flying - offers unique versatility and comfort for offshore transport. Compared with helicopters, the craft provides up to 80% lower operational costs and is equipped with advanced sensors and automated controls to ensure safe and reliable operations. Regent Co-founder and CEO Billy Thalheimer said: "We could ask for no better end user for seagliders in the UAE than the largest energy producer in the country and leader in innovation and sustainability." "Seagliders will drastically reduce the time, cost, and emissions of offshore energy logistics, and we look forward to working together to set a new standard for the energy industry," he stated. The proof-of-concept trial aligns with ADNOC Group's broader Net Zero by 2045 ambition and supports the UAE's strategic objectives to foster innovation, sustainability and national industrial growth, he added. -TradeArabia News Service Copyright 2024 Al Hilal Publishing and Marketing Group Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc.
