Reported Qatar-Boeing deal could boom business in South Carolina
(NewsNation) — Qatar Airways is reportedly set to announce the purchase of at least 150 Boeing aircraft, the latest in President Donald Trump's blitz of business dealings during this week's trip to the Middle East. South Carolina could see a major job spike at its Boeing manufacturing plant in North Charleston if the reported $100 billion deal is finalized. The plant, where Boeing makes most of its 787 Dreamliner planes, currently employs more than 8,000. Local leaders told NewsNation a deal with Qatar could mean more money flowing into North Charleston. 'We're talking about thousands and thousands of jobs,' he added. Local business owners told NewsNation a potential deal would be a game-changer. 'Most of our business, our contractors, they are truck drivers, they're just working-class people. And if it can bring more of those in here, then it would definitely, definitely improve everything for us,' said Li Farmer, a restaurant manager in North Charleston. Did Siri snoop on you? It's a big boost for Boeing after a tough year, production problems and worker strikes. Medical manufacturer opens North Charleston facility, bringing job opportunities
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)—A medical manufacturing company has opened a new facility in North Charleston to build autoinjectors. Swiss-based SHL Medical recently inaugurated a new 360,000-square-foot facility that features medical device injection molding technology and fully automated assembly capabilities. According to the company, the $220 million investment has already brought 300 local jobs to the area and is expected to continue creating employment opportunities. A release from 2024 announcing the build said that once the facility is open, an additional 165 jobs will be opened. SHL Medical built the facility to help meet the growing demand for its product in North America. The autoinjectors will be used for medications for endocrine and metabolic disorders, dermatology, musculoskeletal diseases, and therapy areas. The facility, just off Palmetto Commerce Parkway on Trade Center Court, is the first autoinjector production site the company has opened in the United States. 'The most trusted autoinjector brand is now made in the USA. We are proud to be contributing to the growth of the local economy and becoming a key player in the area while contributing to our sustainability goals,' adds Kimberlee Steele, Managing Director of North America at SHL Medical. North Charleston mayor details how he hopes to strengthen community during ‘State of the City'
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Thursday night, North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess delivered the 2025 'State of the City' address focusing on how he can grow the the address, Mayor Burgess spoke about economic development, community relations and strengthening North Charleston's overall position. He reflected on the progress the city has made in the past year.'We're bringing crime down, we're improving infrastructure, and we're all the places everyone wants to come,' said Mayor Burgess. North Charleston has worked to create affordable and workforce housing. The mayor says in the next year they will continue to update zoning and build infrastructure to create more housing in the city. He spoke about the city's economic development, citing the 650 millions dollar total valuation in construction projects. Burgess cited Roper St. Francis Healthcare opening a new medical campus, Boeing's billion dollar investment at the airport and the South Carolina Port's work on the former naval base as examples of the cities economic achievement. His goal for the next year is to put North Charleston on the map as a place for South Carolinians to live. 'How North Charleston looks, that's the number one thing I'm working on: image. That's why you see my team cleaning out the city, my law enforcement officers working to get folks who can't live peaceful its a place for them to go , all the other departments working to establish better living opportunities, education and most of all economic engine,' said Burgess.
