Dog owners urged to stop playing fetch with tennis ball
Dog owners have been issued a stern warning by Aussie vet and media personality Dr Chris Brown against a common practice. Appearing on Sunrise, the vet detailed what he would never do as a pet owner with the most notable coming in as a shock to some people — playing fetch with a tennis ball. Talking to hosts Matt Shirvington and Natalie Barr, the animal expert talked about the dangers of giving your furry friends a tennis ball. 'A lot of dogs are absolutely ball obsessed — ball is life,' Dr Brown said on Sunrise. 'They chase balls, that puts a lot of stress on their joints... they generally get early onset arthritis on their hips, their knees. 'The biggest thing is the fur on a tennis ball is highly abrasive to be able to withstand hard courts when playing tennis. 'It will actually wear down their teeth, so ball obsessed dogs will often have worn down teeth.' Archie won during the Esperance Dog Club best ball catcher competition. Some other tips the popular Bondi vet gave included only feeding dogs once a day and not plucking their ear hairs. 'If you feed your dog once a day, they will live longer, they will have a lower risk of cognitive decline - doggy dementia - then if you feed them two or three times a day,' he said. 'It helps to regulate their blood sugar, insulin release, and actually means their brain stays younger for longer.' Dr Chris Brown urged pet owners to follow his important tips. Credit: Sunrise This sparked viewers to voice their opinions about feeding their dogs once a day, receiving mixed reviews about the tip. 'Try telling a Labrador one feed a day, i have to hide just to eat my lunch,' one commentor wrote. 'My dog vomits up bile if she doesn't eat multiple times a day,' a sentiment one shared that was echoed by many. 'Our Maltese lived to 16 years. Only fed 1x a day and was still very energetic until the end,' a person said agreeing with the advice. A surprising fact that he gave was saying that cats should never be left alone for more than 24 hours, claiming that the perceived independent animal will feel lonely. 'A lot of people think that cats are very independent, sometimes a bit aloof... research shows they experience more separation anxiety then dogs do.' His other helpful tip for pet owners was to never use fly sprays or cockroach bombs around fish tanks.

‘Talented man': Tributes for cinema owner's legacy of movies
The life and legacy of Geraldton businessman and composer Ron Siemiginowski, owner of the Orana Cinemas chain, is being celebrated after his sudden death at the age of 64 last month. Mr Siemiginowski died on April 27, leaving behind his wife Leticia, seven children and two grandchildren. His family described him as a 'multi-faceted, talented, loving, caring, kind, selfless and humorous man'. The son of a German father and Polish mother, Mr Siemiginowski grew up in Merredin in WA's Wheatbelt where he began playing the piano at the age of nine. His family moved to Albany in 1982, where his father Kasimierz (Kasey) Siemiginowski bought the local drive-in movie theatre in the suburb of Orana. Around this time, Mr Siemiginowski had felt deeply connected to Europe and took on the trip of a lifetime, playing piano in jazz bars and restaurants across Spain and Germany before returning home to find drive-in theatres shutting across the country and the emergence of home videos. Finding inspiration from the fancy multi-screen theatres in the big city, Mr Siemiginowski launched himself into the small business world and built a twin screen theatre with his father on Stirling Terrace in Albany — Orana Cinemas — the only fully Western Australian-owned cinema chain, with the Geraldton location opening in 1999. Apart from his love for the cinema, in 2015 Mr Siemiginowski turned his passion for music into something amazing and, along with Albany musician Giles Watson, composed and produced the stage musical Mimma — about an Italian woman in Britain in the midst of World War II. Speaking to the Geraldton Guardian 2023 from his Beresford home, Mr Siemiginowski said his life was busy and varied so much he didn't have the time to keep up with the latest films to grace the screen at his cinemas. 'I was a bit of a film buff once but don't have time to watch movies now,' he said. Since news of his death, an outpouring of love and support for Mr Siemiginowski and his family has flooded social media, with Orana Cinemas Geraldton posting: 'Ron was greatly loved by the local community for his passion in films and the arts.' 'We will miss you Ron. Rest in peace.' Chapman Athletic Soccer Club president Steven Streich said, 'Ron was a man of warmth, humour, and deep cultural richness. Always ready with a laugh and a helping hand, he was a gentle, kind soul who made a lasting impact on everyone around him. We will miss him deeply. Forever a Tiger. Forever a legend.' A funeral service for Mr Siemiginowski will be held on May 16 at 10am, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Albany.

‘Crazy cheap' supermarket to open in WA city
Kalgoorlie-Boulder will benefit from Spudshed's 'crazy cheap' produce in coming months following a surprise expansion announcement from the family-run supermarket chain. Spudshed owner Tony Galati confirmed on social media on Thursday that the independent supermarket chain would open in Kalgoorlie-Boulder within three months. 'I've got some really exciting news on behalf of myself, my family, and all my staff,' he said in the video. 'I'm hearing the voices out there that you want us to come to regional areas and we've targeted Kalgoorlie. 'We are coming to Kalgoorlie very soon. So, look out guys, we will be there in the next two to three months. 'I'm excited to bring you the crazy cheap prices that Spudshed is known for. 'Stay tuned. Kalgoorlie, we will see you soon.' Tony Galati holding up bags of potatoes at Spudshed. Credit: RegionalHUB This came after an earlier social media video on April 22 where he teased he might 'surprise' the community when asked if he was opening a local shop. Kalgoorlie-Boulder mayor Glenn Wilson said this announcement was a 'notable outcome' for the city. 'The city has been in discussions with Mr Galati and the Spudshed team for a number of years — as far back as 2018— and we're excited to see this vision become a reality,' he said. 'We are fortunate to have established, community-focused fresh produce providers who proudly offer WA products. 'The decision of another respected brand to invest here is a strong vote of confidence in our city. 'The economic investment and job opportunities that come with this new store are a welcome boost for our community and shows that Kalgoorlie-Boulder is a great place to invest, live, and work.' The move represents the furthest expansion away from the metropolitan area for the business, which is expected to open a store in Bunbury later this month. In 2018, Tony Galati told the Kalgoorlie Miner he had visited the town and was 'eyeing off' an expansion to the city, but not for a few years. The recent announcement comes two years after German discount supermarket giant Aldi pulled the plug on its plans to open in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Aldi brought the site of the old Kmart and Coles building on Brookman Street from Harbig Properties in 2021 with plans to build the supermarket on one half, and selling the other half to the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. But in June 2023 it was confirmed by then-mayor John Bowler that Aldi had pulled the plug due to inflation making it less cost effective for the supermarket to maintain its Australia-wide pricing policy.

Mid West's Gnaraloo Station listed for sale
A Gascoyne pastoral station well known for its world-class surf is up for sale, with expressions of interest being sought for the land. Gnaraloo Station, about 100km south of Coral Bay, last sold in 2005 but 20 years later is back on the market. The property is over 84,000ha which includes 62km of beach, as well as 1500 goats. Perth-based O'Rourke Real Estate has been tasked with the sale of the land, which had pastoral and tourism leases lasting about 25 years. Gnaraloo Station Credit: Facebook / RegionalHUB Licensee and general manager Jarrad O'Rourke said the combined asking price would start from $17.5 million. 'People are very protective of it,' he told the ABC. '(The lease holder) doesn't want to sell it to the highest bidder … it is still currently affordable for most, and it's the most amazing place on Earth.' Mr O'Rourke told the Midwest Times they had been 'inundated with enquiries' since posting a coming soon to market teaser. 'Some big money, groups wanting to syndicate together, surf pros, and others representing some notable individuals,' he said. Mr O'Rourke said information packs would be sent out on Tuesday and the site would officially be on the market this week. Surfers come from far and wide to test themselves off Gnaraloo. Credit: Stephen Scourfield / WA News 'We are from $17.5m, the response to that has been mixed between expensive and cheap,' he said. Affectionately known as Tombstone, the surf break at Gnaraloo has attracted surfers for decades. Gnaraloo Station is also home to a homestead with more than 30 cabins, 3-Mile with 99 camp sites and a kiosk, as well as an airstrip. The site has also been popular amongst tourists, with the spot also popular for snorkelling and fishing. The land was understood to have previously been a target for industrial use, with Fortescue acquiring exploration leases around the area in 2021. It was understood Gnaraloo Station could have been a base for the group's renewable energy pursuits, plans which have since been scaled back.
