IMD issues yellow alert as rain and thunderstorms loom over Mumbai

Mumbai, June 7 (UNI) A yellow alert has been issued for Mumbai due to expected rain and thunderstorms, the Meteorological Department said on Saturday. The Regional Meteorological Department attributed the weather to oligocyclonic conditions affecting the region, along with weak southwest monsoon winds. Mumbai witnessed significant rainfall at several locations on Friday, while other parts of Maharashtra remained under cloudy skies. Temperatures held steady without much increase, but the combination of humidity and intermittent rain created a muggy and uncomfortable atmosphere for residents. Meteorologists predict that this pattern will continue through the weekend, with light to moderate rainfall and the possibility of thunderstorms. Since the onset of the monsoon, rainfall has been moderate, with Colaba recording 30 mm and Santa Cruz 47.1 mm over the past six days. Despite temperatures being slightly below average—32.2°C in Colaba and 31.7°C in Santa Cruz—the high humidity contributed to a warm sensation. Notably, Santa Cruz received 14 mm of rain on Friday, while Colaba remained dry. Similar weather is forecast for districts including Jalgaon, Nashik, Pune, and Nagpur, where isolated thunderstorms are also anticipated. This weather pattern extends from Madhya Maharashtra to Coastal Andhra Pradesh, as well as parts of Karnataka and Telangana, where cloudy conditions prevail. Despite the challenges posed by the monsoon, farmers are reporting success, exemplified by a local grower cultivating Iranian dates organically and earning notable profits. Rain is expected to continue over the weekend, although thunderstorm activity may decrease if conditions change. UNI AAA ARN

Cloudy skies, winds & showers mark beginning of June in Indore

Indore: The city witnessed mixed weather conditions on Monday, with cloudy skies in the morning giving way to bright sunshine by the afternoon. In the evening, gusty winds swept through the city, accompanied by light drizzles in some eastern parts of Indore, offering brief relief from the humidity. According to the Regional Meteorological Department, Monday's day temperature settled at 35.2 degrees Celsius, which is 5 degrees below normal, while the night temperature dipped to 23.2 degrees Celsius, 2 degrees below the seasonal average. Senior meteorologist Dr Divya E. Surendran said that three cyclonic circulations and a western disturbance are currently active, influencing the weather across Madhya Pradesh. These systems may bring light rainfall and gusty winds to several districts, including Indore, over the next few days. However, the strong monsoon system from the Arabian Sea weakened and remains stalled over Maharashtra and Odisha. Until a new system develops, the region may only see intermittent light showers. "Temperatures remained below normal over the past few days. Although the active weather systems over the state are currently exerting limited influence, local convection is expected to trigger thunderstorms and gusty winds across most parts of the state over the next five days," Surendran added. Meteorologists added that heavy rainfall is unlikely in the first week of June. Skies will remain partly cloudy, providing some respite from harsh sunlight. Localised rain due to heat and humidity may occur, but widespread monsoon showers are not expected yet. June is known for its unpredictable weather, often showcasing the full spectrum—from intense heat to sudden cooling showers. Across the Indore-Ujjain division, temperatures remained below normal. Ujjain recorded 36°C and 24.5°C, Ratlam 34.2°C and 20.5°C, Khargone 37°C and 21.4°C, Khandwa 37.1°C and 22°C, and Dhar 35.1°C and 24.2°C for day and night, respectively. A weather warning has been issued for strong winds (40–50 kmph) in districts including Indore, Dhar, Ujjain, Ratlam, and Khargone, valid till 8:30 am on June 4. Residents are advised to stay alert as gusty conditions may continue.

Chennai Weather Update: Moderate To Heavy Rainfall Expected, IMD Issues Yellow Alert

Last Updated: Tamil Nadu is currently receiving rainfall from the Northeast Monsoon, which brings moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal to the state's coastal areas. A day after Chennai witnessed a sudden spell of rain bringing relief from the scorching heat, the Indian Meteorological Department issued a 'yellow' alert for the city on Monday. According to the IMD, a partly cloudy sky with possible moderate rain and thunderstorms is expected in some areas. The minimum and maximum temperatures today are expected to be around 29 degrees Celsius and 36 degrees Celsius, respectively. The humidity is expected to be around 68 per cent. The Regional Meteorological Department (RMC) predicted that moderate to heavy rain is expected in five districts of Tamil Nadu on May 14 due to a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea. Tamil Nadu is currently receiving rainfall from the Northeast Monsoon, which brings moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal to the state's coastal areas. As these winds blow from the northeast towards the southern peninsula, they result in rainfall along the eastern coast, particularly in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, a mostly dry day is predicted with partly cloudy skies and no major rain. Minimum and maximum temperatures will be 29 degrees Celsius and 39 degrees Celsius.
