Skinner keeping feet on ground as West Ham eye sixth

On Saturday, West Ham could secure a top-six finish in the WSL for only the second time in their over 11th-placed Leicester, combined with Liverpool failing to pick up three points against Chelsea, would see West Ham snatch sixth place from the Reds and equal their previous best finish (2021-22).However, while manager Rehanne Skinner says it would be a "fantastic" achievement, she is keen for her squad to "keep our feet on the ground"."Where we end up at the end of the season is where we'll deserve to be. You can't cheat the table," she said."Equalling [2021-22] will be fantastic, especially given the way the game's evolved. That's really hard to do now given the teams in the league."We've got to keep our feet on the ground for one more game. We can't be thinking about the end result before we've played the game. If we set our sights on that, we'll miss the game in front of us."Though keen to manage expectations ahead of the Leicester game, Skinner did praise the progress her side has made, particularly during the second half of the Ham won just two of their opening 10 games and began 2025 just three points clear of the relegation zone, but have picked up 15 points in their past 11 matches."This season it's probably evolved even more than we might have hoped. Our performances in the second half of the season have been a significant uplift. I'm really proud," she said."Every year is about evolving the team. We want to keep bringing in players who fit the culture and we want to make sure we've got more depth across every position."It's no secret our away form needs to improve if we're going to be really competitive. We've got several things right this year but it doesn't ever stop."

West Ham United boss Skinner signs new one-year deal

West Ham United manager Rehanne Skinner has signed a one-year contract extension with the club. WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Hammers this afternoon. Advertisement Skinner was appointed West Ham United boss in summer 2023. The club ended the 2023/2024 campaign in 11th place in what was a season of transition. There has been major progress made this term and the East Londoners could yet gate-crash the top half of the Barclays Women's Super League table. With Skinner at the helm, West Ham United have become one of the strongest sides in the division on their own turf while they have obtained a licence to thrill with goals flowing throughout the team. The future looks very bright for The Hammers and the club have therefore moved to retain their manager's services for another year. After signing on again with West Ham United, Skinner said 'I'm delighted to be extending my contract at West Ham United. We've made huge progress on and off the pitch over the last 18 months, which has been a collective effort from everyone at the Club. We have a fantastic group of players and staff, an incredibly supportive Board and a passionate, loyal fanbase that have all contributed to this growth. Advertisement 'I believe we now have the foundations in place to keep developing and improving, and I'm really excited to be given the opportunity to keep moving this team forwards.' West Ham United are next in action on Sunday when they play host to Aston Villa at The Chigwell Construction Stadium.

West Ham 'long way off' top four despite results

Rehanne Skinner says her West Ham team are "a long way off" breaking into the top four of the Women's Super League despite their recent success against the division's leading Hammers are unbeaten in their past four WSL matches, with draws against leaders Chelsea, third-placed Manchester United and Manchester City in said her team showed what they are capable of during those games, but they have now got to "deliver that against the teams that are in and around us".West Ham, who have never finished higher than sixth in the WSL, currently sit seventh in the table - four points off fifth-placed Liverpool with three games remaining. "We're a long way off breaking into that top four in reality," Skinner said."But I think at the same time, the way that we're able to compete stands us in good stead for continuing to progress from where we were last year. "These are all building blocks that will help us to be more successful year on year."

'We're a real force to be reckoned with'

'We're a real force to be reckoned with' - Skinner [Getty Images] West Ham boss Rehanne Skinner says her side are becoming "a real force to be reckoned with" after an upturn in form. The Hammers beat Tottenham 2-0 on Sunday after they held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw the week before. Asked what has been behind the team's recent success, Skinner said: "We're obviously just more composed structurally and just in terms of how we manage the game in and out of possession. Advertisement "We've been effective when we've gone forward scoring as well. So obviously we've got goals out of games. "I think when we are transitioning to attack, we're becoming a real force to be reckoned with. "We're capable of scoring goals against anybody." Here are more key lines from Skinner's news conference before Sunday's trip to Chelsea (16:30 GMT): She said playing Chelsea twice since mid-January "stands us in good stead" of what to expect from the Blues. Skinner added: "We know it's going to be a challenge. We know they're at the top of the table for a reason." Viviane Asseyi is in "fantastic form" and it's a "fantastic achievement" for her to have equalled her best WSL scoring record (six goals) with five games left. Tenacity and desire on the pitch is a "non-negotiable" for Skinner, who said it is an attribute she looks for when recruiting players. The quality of pitches has "not painted a very good picture about the women's game" in recent weeks.
