Hotel shelter closures impact western Mass. towns
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The release of the audit comes as the state plans to close its remaining motel and hotel shelters this summer, including the remaining few in our area. Dozens of families are still being housed in hotels in our area, including in West Springfield. On Tuesday, 22News spoke with the city's mayor about how closing those shelters will impact the community. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey announced on Monday that all hotel and motel shelters will close six months ahead of the original schedule. Western Massachusetts population drops as state numbers rise Massachusetts is the only state to have a 'Right to Shelter' law, meaning families with children and pregnant women have access to temporary housing when they are experiencing homelessness. While the law may have temporarily helped with the migrant crisis, many were not in favor of the hotel shelters, including State Senator John Velis, who voted against it multiple times. 'We just do not have the money,' Velis said. 'We didn't have the money three years ago, we didn't have the money two years ago. Right now, with all the uncertainty at the federal government, we most certainly do not have the money.' There were once as many as 100 hotel and motel shelters across the state in the summer of 2023. Now, as of April 30 this year, only 32 remain. One of the remaining shelters is located at the old Clarion Hotel in West Springfield. Mayor Will Reichelt told 22News it has been difficult for the town. 'Schools have really the largest impact, because it is the students that are coming and building up classroom capacity,' Reichelt said. 'So that'll certainly be better for our school districts as a whole.' He said not only will it be a relief for the school district, but also a step in the right direction for the families in the shelter. 'The Clarion is a hotel. It is not built as a shelter, it is not meant to be long-term housing,' Reichelt said. 'So, I think this is a win-win for both sides, for the town and its resources, and also for the folks that were living there to get into real, actual housing.' All of the shelters have been ordered to close by the end of the summer. The state spent about $1 billion annually on the system for the past two years. Senator Velis said there has been English language education and job training to support families moving out of the shelters, so he's optimistic that means more people are going to be joining the workforce. In a social media post by West Springfield Mayor Will Reichelt, the drag box efficiently patches larger areas with a much smoother finish compared to the old shovel-and-rake method. In addition, the equipment helps add a fresh layer of asphalt on smaller streets that may be delayed or overlooked. AAA forecasts record road trips ahead of Memorial Day weekend Crews worked to repair Lyncosky Drive nearly two weeks ago using the town's new drag box. If you notice any potholes along your commute in West Springfield, Mayor Reichelt is encouraging drivers to report them by emailing pothole@ WWLP-22News, an NBC affiliate, began broadcasting in March 1953 to provide local news, network, syndicated, and local programming to western Massachusetts. Next gen BMW M3 to debut newly developed six-cylinder engine alongside electric variant
Unlike the current S58 twin-turbo inline-six, the new engine will be developed specifically for this generation. In addition to the EV, BMW will sell a gasoline-powered M3 with an all-new six-cylinder engine. BMW is preparing a major update for the next-generation M3, introducing both an all-electric model and a redesigned gasoline-powered version. As the brand transitions into a new era of mobility, new information sheds light on how BMW plans to balance innovation with tradition. The upcoming electric M3 will be built on an 800-volt platform and is expected to churn out over 700 horsepower. BMW's goal isn't merely rapid acceleration but a complete redefinition of handling and performance. According to a rport by Motor1, Dr. Mike Reichelt, head of BMW's Neue Klasse platform, emphasized that the electric M3 is engineered to deliver unparalleled driving dynamics, thanks to BMW's new "Heart of Joy" control unit. This state-of-the-art system controls the drivetrain, brakes, energy recovery, and steering, providing instant response and unprecedented precision. In addition to the EV, BMW will sell a gasoline-powered M3 with an all-new six-cylinder engine. Unlike the current S58 twin-turbo inline-six, the new engine will be developed specifically for this generation. Although specific details are scarce, speculation suggests it could be a hybridized evolution of the existing S58, possibly matching the 700-horsepower figure of the electric model. Crucially, BMW has no plans to downsize to a four-cylinder engine for the M3, reassuring traditionalists that performance and character remain a top priority. It's, instead, about designing a machine with a real-world, real-world handling, giving it stable, predictable dynamics through every corner without needing continuous correction. The Neue Klasse 3 Series is set to debut later this year, with sales beginning in early 2026 in the global markets. Next BMW M3 will have an ICE version too
BMW has confirmed that its M3 will live on with combustion power, albeit in an entirely new form. While the spotlight may be on the upcoming electric M3, which is tipped to deliver over 515kW thanks to an 800-volt architecture and four motors, petrol purists have reason to stay tuned. A newly developed six-cylinder engine will power an ICE version of the next-gen M3. Speaking with Top Gear UK , BMW Neue Klasse project lead Dr. Mike Reichelt revealed that the petrol-powered M3 won't simply be a carryover of the current S58 unit. Instead, it'll feature a 'new type' of straight-six, distinct from the current 3.0-litre twin-turbo configuration found in today's G80 M3. Read more 2025 BMW M5 Review 'We're also going to offer [the M3] with a new type of six-cylinder engine,' said Reichelt. 'We know some long-time M fans may not be ready to go full EV just yet, so we want to give them something special.' Details on the new engine remain under wraps, but it's expected to push well beyond the current model's 405kW. A hybridised evolution of the S58 seems likely, potentially bridging the performance gap between internal combustion and BMW M's electric future. What's clear is that downsizing isn't on the table—BMW has dismissed the idea of a four-cylinder M3 as 'really difficult.' Electric or petrol, dynamics remain front and centre for the M division. The upcoming M3 will showcase BMW's new 'Heart of Joy' performance control system; a centralised brain previewed in the Vision Neue Klasse concept. The system unifies the car's responses to steering, braking, energy recovery, and drivetrain inputs, processing data up to ten times faster than current systems. BMW says the result is razor-sharp precision, especially through the bends. 'It's not just about 0–100 anymore,' Reichelt said. 'It's about creating a car that feels right through every corner, every input. That's what this new system delivers.' The Neue Klasse 3 Series is set to debut later this year, with the EV variant arriving in 2026. The petrol-powered M3 is expected to follow in late 2026 or early 2027.

West Springfield DPW to begin Kings Highway valve project
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The West Springfield DPW Water Division is beginning a month-long project at the intersection of Kings Highway and Elm Street, which will result in traffic detours and changes to the area. Springfield crews put out car fire on I-291 west West Springfield Mayor Will Reichelt announced that the DPW will be replacing a water pressure control valve at the intersection, with work commencing Monday. The water control valve currently in place is one of four in the southeast section of West Springfield responsible for reducing water pressure, and was installed in the 1950s. Reichelt said that due to the valve's age, the Kings Highway Control Valve Project is crucial to keep water flowing for the community. Work will be underway between March 31 and April 25, during which time traffic detours will be in place. Drivers will be expected to take alternate routes, and local traffic will be permitted to navigate the area with the assistance of detail officers on-site. The DPW said that signs will be posted in the work zone to guide travelers.
