Greater Noida to set up bio-CNG plant at Astoli

The Greater Noida authority has decided to set up a bio-CNG plant in Astoli village to treat 300 tonnes of wet waste every day and turn it into eco-friendly fuel that can be used in vehicles. The plant will be set up by Reliance Bioenergy on 11.5 acres of land, which the firm has taken on lease for 25 years at a rate of ₹1 per square metre per year. Construction began on April 11 and the project is expected to be completed in one-and-a-half years, officials said. Reliance will operate the plant using technology that processes kitchen and food waste through a method called bio-methanation, which produces Bio-CNG gas that can be used in vehicles such as buses. 'Reliance will pay the Greater Noida authority ₹225 for every tonne of waste processed. Reliance will be allowed to sell the gas and other by-products. The plant will receive benefits from carbon credit revenue and solve the city's waste disposal problem,' said Ravi Kumar NG, chief executive officer of the Greater Noida authority. The plant will help turn wet waste into clean fuel, said additional chief executive officer of Greater Noida authority, Srilakshmi VS. Greater Noida produces around 800 tonnes of waste daily. Once operational, the plant will help in treating a major portion of that waste the same day it is collected, reducing pollution and keeping the city clean. The authority plans to have similar arrangements for treating garbage at Astoli.

Green gain: Work starts on bio-CNG plant in Greater Noida

Noida: Greater Noida Authority has started the construction of a 300 TPD bio-CNG plant in Astauli. The facility, developed by Reliance Bioenergy on an 11.5-acre plot, will convert wet waste into vehicle fuel, generating revenue through Rs 225 per tonne in royalty agreement. Officials said construction of the plant recently began after the company was handed possession of the site. The project originates from a Request for Proposal (RFP) issued by GNIDA in 2023 to handle the city's growing wet waste load. Under the Uttar Pradesh Solid Waste Management Policy, the land was leased at the rate of Re 1 sqm per year. Reliance Bioenergy was given the project in Sept 2024 following the RFP process, and a formal agreement was signed in March 2025. The plant is being developed on a design, finance, build, own and operate (DFBOO) model, where the entire investment and operational responsibility will be taken care of by the concessionaire without any financial support from the Authority. According to the agreement, the plant must be operational within 12 months from the date of obtaining consent to establish (CTE) from the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB). The company is free to select the technology, but it must be based on bio-methanation and capable of processing 300 TPD of biodegradable waste to produce road-grade Bio-CNG fuel. This fuel will meet IS specifications and be suitable for use in automobiles, especially city buses. The Authority will receive a royalty of Rs 225 per tonne of waste processed, without bearing any operational costs. Additionally, GNIDA will benefit from revenue generated through carbon credits, while Reliance Bioenergy will retain rights to sell Bio-CNG and other by-products.
