U.S. Senate Honors Rell Sunn as "Caretaker" of Native American Culture

The U.S. Senate just passed resolution honoring Rell Sunn and five other Hawaiians as important Native American Woman for their contributions throughout history. Sunn was recognized by name in a U.S. Senate resolution celebrating the heritage, culture and contributions of native women that was passed in conjunction with Women's History Month. Sen. Brian Schatz of Hawaii, joined Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Alaska's senator, in spearheading the resolution, which honored American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian women. 'These were 'the life givers, the culture bearers and the caretakers of Native peoples who have made precious contributions, said Murkowski, 'enriching the lives of all people of the United States.' Anyone who knew Rell knows there couldn't be a better honoree. From Easter Egg Hunts for kids in the Makaha tidepools to the founding of the first women's pro surfing association, Rell created a aura of Hawaiian aloha that left a beautiful path. She studied authentic Hawaiian hula, created an iconic home filled with Hawaiiana, and was a revered friend with princes, paupers, poets and kings, all while being a single mother. 'I will always be so proud of mom,' said Jan Sunn, Rell's regal Hawaiian daughter who has shepherded the Rell Sunn Foundation from its creation. 'She had the spirit of Duke Kahanmoku in her.' The Rell Sunn Educational Fund is a public benefit, non-profit corporation organized and operated exclusively for charitable, scientific, and educational purposes. 'These women have shown in their own work and throughout their lifetime, the true practice of Mana Wahine - the power of the Hawaiian woman,' noted Dr Kauanoe Kamana, the Principle and Director of Ke Kula o Nawahiokalaniopu, a center for Hawaiian Language Studies at the University of Hawaii. 'All six of these women have a clear understanding of the significance of moʻokūʻauhau (the Hawaiian word for genealogy) 'not only their own genealogy, but of the Hawaiian people.' Perhaps the most important mark Rell Sunn left is the life her only daughter has lived - a path of dignity and strength forged in the painful experiences of life but nonetheless triumphing by raising her own two children as model citizens. Rell was the definition of a Hawaiian waterman: a diver, paddler, fisherman, and a world class surfer who competed in the very first WSL Tour in 1976. So it is not surprising that Rell was the lone example native women who was honored for their athletic competition and created opportunities for female athletes in their sport. 'Native Hawaiian women have made incredible contributions to our communities and country, and it's critical that we recognize their impacts on American history,' said U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz, vice chair of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, who cowrote the resolution. 'The Hawaiian women we commemorate are among many more who deserve our recognition and gratitude year-round.' 'These women not only excelled in their achievements but also were role models for us to follow,' concluded Dr Kauanoe Kamana. 'This is not just for one month, but for all time.'

Rell Sunn is ready to steal your heart at Maui Humane Society

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A Maui pup continues searching for his fur-ever home; if you visit him at the Maui Humane Society, he will steal your Rell Sunn and his nine siblings were handed to the Maui Humane Society after the owner sadly passed away in June. Staff-favorite Max looks for permanent home Though his siblings have been adopted, Rell Sunn is still waiting to 'ride the waves of life with a new ohana.' Officials said this pup is shy when you first meet him but after a calm and gentle introduction, Rell Sunn will show off his heart full of love and playfulness. Rell came to the shelter with some mange, but he's healed now. The shelter added his hair may or may not grow back, but he's still a cutie with tons of personality. When he's excited, he has the sweetest play bow and loves romping around in the grass with plush toys and balls. Rell could use a bit more training as the noise and chaos of kennel life have been hard on him.
