Four overdoses in 24 hours, Reno County issues health alert

RENO COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — Health officials say there has been a recent unusual spike in overdoses in Reno County. They have issued a health alert to warn the community of the problem. The Reno County Health Department says there were four overdoses within 24 hours. The victims were using what appeared to be fentanyl and other opioids. The department has tracked overdoses and trends since the fall of 2020. It issued a health alert in June 2023 because of three kratom deaths in six months. It also issued one last August because of five overdoses and one death within 24 hours. Video shows speeding snow plow driver clearing Kansas City street too quickly The Reno County Health Department wants people to be aware of the risk of opiates and the toxic drug supply that includes fentanyl and the suspicion of xylazine, also known as tranq. If you know someone who uses drugs, health officials suggest carrying the overdose antidote naloxone (Narcan) and learning how to administer it. The county has resources that can help people and families dealing with substance abuse.
