Oman condemns blockade imposed on Gaza

NEW YORK: The Sultanate of Oman condemned the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip, warning of the consequences of the continued use of starvation and forced displacement as weapons of war. Oman stressed the need to hold perpetrators accountable for these grave violations. This was stated by Omar bin Saif al Kharousi, the Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations, before the Security Council during discussions on 'The Situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian Cause.' He said that the Middle East continues to face various challenges since the establishment of the United Nations, particularly the Palestinian issue and the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people. Gaza has now become one of the most horrific scenes of humanitarian disaster due to the brutal Israeli aggression against thousands of innocent civilians, he added. He warned against international complacency in stopping this aggression, emphasising that the daily massacres, collective starvation, and systematic targeting of civilians and infrastructure - including hospitals, schools and shelters - constitute a blatant violation of all international norms and conventions and amount to crimes against humanity. The Sultanate of Oman has expressed its deep appreciation for the tremendous efforts made by UN agencies, particularly UNRWA, and its field staff who continue their humanitarian work under the most severe conditions, risking their lives to deliver humanitarian and medical aid to civilians in Gaza. Oman has condemned attempts to weaken UNRWA and obstruct its humanitarian operations, calling on the international community to ensure its continued funding and support so that it may fulfil its vital mandate. Further, Oman stressed the necessity of providing protection for UN personnel and ensuring their work continues unimpeded and free from targeting. It emphasised that the Security Council cannot demand respect for its resolutions on other issues while turning a blind eye to the implementation of its decisions on the Palestinian cause, particularly Resolution 2735 (2024), which called for an immediate ceasefire. — ONA

It emphasised that the Security Council cannot demand respect for its resolutions on other issues while turning a blind eye to the implementation of its decisions on the Palestinian cause, particularly Resolution 2735 (2024), which called for an immediate ceasefire. Oman has urged the Security Council to assume its historical responsibility by adopting a clear resolution demanding a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire, ensuring international protection for the Palestinian people, and urgently recommending the admission of the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations—a step toward rectifying the historical injustice that has persisted for over seven decades. The Sultanate of Oman has praised the noble mediation efforts undertaken by the Arab Republic of Egypt, the State of Qatar, and the United States of America to halt the aggression and establish a lasting truce. It also supports the recovery and reconstruction plan proposed by Egypt in coordination with the State of Palestine and backed by Arab and Islamic nations, which offers a glimmer of hope for people who have endured international neglect, displacement, and destruction. Oman further commended the efforts of the French Republic, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and ongoing preparations for an international peace conference aimed at implementing the two-state solution. Additionally, Oman has affirmed that the continuation of occupation and settlement activities, along with the obstruction of just peace opportunities, will inevitably lead to further deterioration and escalation in the region. The only path to achieving security and stability in the Middle East lies in ending the Israeli occupation of all Arab territories, withdrawing from the Syrian Golan, restoring Lebanon's full territorial sovereignty, compelling the occupation to implement all relevant UN resolutions, and ceasing any attempts to gain control over the occupied lands. In concluding its statement, Oman has asserted that the security and stability of the region can only be achieved by recognising the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the right to establish their independent and sovereign state on the borders of 4 June 1967, with East Jerusalem (Al Quds) as its capital—based on international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.

Jordan urges UN to stop ‘bloodshed' in Gaza, pressure Israel to open crossings for aid

By AFP - May 01,2025 - Last updated at May 01,2025 Caption: Palestinian children queue for a hot meal at a charity kitchen in Gaza City on April 30, 2025 (AFP photo) AMMAN — Jordan on Wednesday called on the United Nations Security Council to take immediate action to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza and to hold Israel accountable for its obligations under international law. Speaking during a Security Council session, Jordan's Permanent Representative to the UN Mahmoud Daifallah Hmoud, urged the council to enforce Resolution 2735 and other relevant decisions that call for the opening of border crossings and the unimpeded entry of essential supplies—including food, medicine, fuel, and shelter materials—across all areas of Gaza. Hmoud condemned Israel's actions as severe breaches of international law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention and rulings issued by the International Court of Justice. He stressed that Israel's role as an occupying force carries legal obligations that are being systematically ignored, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra. Reiterating Jordan's firm position, he called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, an end to the blockade, and the full implementation of a prisoner exchange deal facilitated by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States. Hmoud also emphasized the urgent need to launch a reconstruction process for Gaza, based on the joint Egyptian-Palestinian plan. The proposal, he said, has been adopted by Arab and Islamic states and enjoys broad international support. Addressing the situation in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, Hmoud described rising violence and escalating Israeli policies as dangerous and destabilizing. He condemned the ongoing targeting of Jerusalem's residents and its Islamic and Christian holy sites, including repeated incursions into Al Aqsa Mosque/ Al Haram Al Sharif by Israeli settlers and extremist government officials. 'These actions—home demolitions, forced displacement, land seizures—are designed to change the facts on the ground and alter Jerusalem's historical and legal status,' Hmoud said. 'They are clear violations of international law and must be firmly rejected.' He reaffirmed Jordan's commitment to the Hashemite Custodianship over Jerusalem's Muslim and Christian holy sites and called on the international community to support the Palestinian people's resilience in the face of Israel's annexation and settlement policies. Jordan also reiterated its demand for the Security Council to compel Israel to stop these violations, warning that continued inaction risks igniting a broader regional crisis. Highlighting the critical role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), Hmoud denounced recent Israeli legislation targeting the agency's operations in the occupied Palestinian territories. He called for increased international support to ensure UNRWA can continue providing life-saving services to millions of refugees. He also reaffirmed Jordan's position on the right of return and compensation for Palestinian refugees, as enshrined in UN resolutions. 'Peace is our strategic choice,' Hmoud concluded. 'But it can only be achieved through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with a two-state solution and the Arab Peace Initiative.

Egypt calls on ICJ to declare Israel's continued occupation a violation of international law

In an oral argument before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Monday, the Egyptian delegation submitted a request for the Court to issue an advisory opinion stating that Israel's prolonged occupation of the Palestinian territories is a continued violation of international law. It added that Israel's obligations as an occupying power must continue throughout Palestinian territory until the end of its occupation. The ICJ in The Hague, Netherlands, began public hearings on Monday for an advisory opinion regarding Israel's obligations towards the United Nations and its agencies and bodies in the occupied Palestinian territories. Egypt was represented before the Court by the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for International Legal Affairs and Treaties, Hatem Abdel-Qader, and the Legal Advisor at the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yasmine Moussa. Egypt's demands The Egyptian delegation emphasized that Israel's gross violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law in the occupied Palestinian territories constitute part of widespread, systematic, and comprehensive measures aimed at imposing a fait accompli and achieving the de facto annexation of Palestinian territory. Egypt also requested that the court recognize Israel's obligations, as an occupying power, to provide reparations for the harm it has caused. This obligation must be met by lifting the blockade on Gaza immediately and unconditionally, ensuring widespread and safe access for essential supplies to civilians in Gaza Strip through all crossings leading to the Strip, without impediments or restrictions, immediately implementing Security Council Resolution 2735, and agreeing on an urgent relief plan for Palestinian civilians. Israel's violations The Egyptian delegation pointed out that since October 2023, Israel has been using starvation and a complete blockade of Gaza as a weapon directed against civilians in the strip. 'Israel has persisted in its use of this weapon by deliberately and arbitrarily closing all crossings into Gaza, preventing the entry of food, potable water, fuel, medical supplies, and other basic needs,' they added. The Egyptian delegation emphasized that Israel has indeed violated its obligations under international law, both through its systematic policy of targeting civilians and representatives of relief organizations, its persistent imposition of legal and administrative obstacles that impede and restrict the delivery of humanitarian aid, and its direct attacks on humanitarian infrastructure. This included the bombing of the Rafah border crossing, aimed at disrupting its operations and seizing control of the Palestinian side of the crossing, followed by Israel's subsequent military assault on the city of Rafah, which had been a refuge for over a million Palestinians.

Palestine condemns expansion of Zionist enemy army in Gaza Strip

Ramallah - Saba: The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the Zionist enemy's expansion of its ground invasion of the Gaza Strip and the mobilization of additional forces and military equipment to participate in the war of extermination and displacement against the Palestinian people. In a statement issued Monday, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry warned of the repercussions of the Zionist enemy's escalation of ethnic cleansing crimes and the wholesale demolition of homes in the northern occupied West Bank and its refugee camps, as well as the expansion of the forced displacement of tens of thousands of citizens who have become homeless and are subjected to the most horrific forms of suffering, especially during the holy month of Ramadan. It noted that the international community's reliance on a few statements, expressions of concern, and unimplemented UN resolutions now provides cover for the enemy's crimes and its violent isolation of the Palestinian people. The Palestinian Foreign Ministry called for increased international pressure to compel the Zionist enemy to implement international legitimacy resolutions, particularly Security Council Resolution 2735, the Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice, and dozens of other international resolutions to which it has not complied.
