Restaurant Brands International's (NYSE:QSR) investors will be pleased with their respectable 48% return over the last three years
Investors can buy low cost index fund if they want to receive the average market return. But in any diversified portfolio of stocks, you'll see some that fall short of the average. For example, the Restaurant Brands International Inc. (NYSE:QSR) share price return of 34% over three years lags the market return in the same period. In the last year the stock has gained 5.9%. Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns. This technology could replace computers: discover the 20 stocks are working to make quantum computing a reality. While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price. During three years of share price growth, Restaurant Brands International achieved compound earnings per share growth of 2.4% per year. In comparison, the 10% per year gain in the share price outpaces the EPS growth. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did three years ago. That's not necessarily surprising considering the three-year track record of earnings growth. You can see below how EPS has changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image). Dive deeper into Restaurant Brands International's key metrics by checking this interactive graph of Restaurant Brands International's earnings, revenue and cash flow. When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Restaurant Brands International, it has a TSR of 48% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return. Restaurant Brands International provided a TSR of 9.6% over the last twelve months. But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it's actually better than the average return of 8% over half a decade This could indicate that the company is winning over new investors, as it pursues its strategy. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
