Tweed makes a stylish comeback: Classic fabric, but with modern fashion vibes

"When you see tweed on the runway, you don't expect it to come from here," joked 38-year-old former banker Alexander MacLeod as he set up his loom in a converted barn on the shores of a Scottish loch. MacLeod became a weaver two years ago, joining residents on the islands of Lewis and Harris, off Scotland's northwest coast, in helping to rejuvenate the tweed industry after a significant period of decline. "It's a good thing to keep the tradition going," he said. Tweed is a symbol of Scottish heritage and has "always been part of the culture" on the Outer Hebrides, added Macleod, who hails from the island of Scalpay, which is connected to Harris by a bridge. It's now "an attractive sector to be in", he explained. He left the Hebrides for seven years to work in banking but the pull of his roots proved too strong. During the day, McLeod now works for a small local cosmetics company. In the evenings, he puts on a podcast, usually about espionage, and patiently begins to weave. Only the steady hum of his machine disturbs the calm of the old stone barn. Harris tweed, traditionally made from 100 percent wool, is the only fabric protected by a 1993 Act of Parliament. It must be "handwoven by the islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides, finished in the Outer Hebrides, and made from pure virgin wool dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides". The fabric, once associated with the British aristocracy, then goes to the spinning mill for a quality control check, where the slightest flaw is flagged up. Finally, it receives the precious "Harris Tweed" stamp – a globe topped with a cross – certifying the fabric's provenance and authenticity, issued by the Harris Tweed Authority (HTA). The tweed then leaves the island to be purchased by discerning companies abroad, including luxury brands such as Christian Dior, Chanel, and Gucci. Several sneaker brands such as Nike, New Balance, and Converse have also used it for limited edition products. The traditional staples are jackets, caps, and bags, but the fabric can also used for furniture. There are 140 weavers, according to the HTA, which launched a recruitment campaign in 2023 and offered workshops to learn the trade following a wave of retirements. This know-how, often passed down from generation to generation, is now being nurtured by a different profile of weaver. "It's nice to see younger people coming in," said Kelly MacDonald, director of operations at the HTA. "When I joined the industry 22 years ago, there was a severe period of decline. I was wondering: 'Is there going to be an industry anymore?'" But the industry is now enjoying a "resurgence" and "significant growth", with more than 580,000 metres of tweed produced in 2024. "We are always looking at new markets," she explained, and tweed is now exported to Korea, Japan, Germany, France and other countries. It is no longer dependent on the US market, as it once was, and should be largely shielded from the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. Read more: Malaysian fashion designer Fern Chua talks about her 10-year journey with batik Slow fashion Tweed has "modernised", said Cameron MacArthur, who works at Carloway Mill, one of the three spinning mills in the west of the Isle of Lewis. He is only 29, but has already worked there for 12 years. The mill, with its large machines, looks as if it hasn't changed for decades. But MacArthur has seen it evolve to embrace a younger workforce and newer fabrics, meaning it is no longer just the ultra-classic Prince of Wales check or dark colours that are on offer. "Nowadays, we're allowed to make up our own colours... and we're just doing different things with it, modernising it, making it brighter," he said, showing off rolls of turquoise blue and fuchsia pink. "We're so busy... it never used to be like that," he said, adding that he was "proud" to be working with the local product. MacDonald also noted that tweed was an antidote to environmentally unfriendly "fast fashion". "How nice to own a product where you can actually look on a map to a tiny island and say, that's where my jacket was made. That's so rare now, and I think people really engaged with that," he said. "Every stage of the production has to happen here, but from start to finish, it is a really long process. We are the epitome of slow fashion." – AFP

Dockers Footwear Marks Next Chapter With New Innovations, More Classifications

Dockers footwear is ready for its next chapter. The category, which is under license with Nashville-based Genesco, has undergone a massive transformation in recent seasons and executives are eager to show it off this upcoming market season. More from WWD EXCLUSIVE: Aerosoles to Preview Archive-Inspired 'Essentials' Collection to Buyers at Next Week's FFANY Authentic Brands Group Is Buying Dockers for $311 Million Johnston & Murphy Marks 175th Anniversary With Special Campaign, Collection and More According to Genesco Brands Group president Rick Higgins, the company has been laser focused on evolving the brand's shoe offering away from just an assortment centered around classic dress silhouettes. 'We saw an opportunity to repurpose that legacy and build something that better fits today's consumer,' Higgens told FN in an exclusive interview. 'The market is constantly moving, and our customer is looking for footwear that delivers on comfort and versatility along with the right look, and that's exactly where we've taken the line.' The exec noted that the company 'made some real strides' thanks to listening closely to the Dockers' consumer. 'They're telling us that they want footwear that can move with them,' Higgens said. 'Something they can wear to work, on the go, or go out with friends, without having to sacrifice comfort or style. That insight has helped shape the way we think about design materials and the overall experience of wearing Dockers' shoes.' Higgens added that the company has seen 'great support' from its retail partners, which have been 'excited' about the new direction for the category. 'There has been momentum on the self to our updated assortment – from new comfort platforms to more casual offerings,' the exec said. 'It has been incredibly encouraging as we work on adding fresh perspectives and technical know-how to help take the product to the next level.' The executive also highlighted key styles for spring/summer 2026, which include the Resurgence shoe with the brand's active rebound technology, the Bingley dress shoe series with elevated comfort features, and the Sorrento men's casual sandal with an active rebound footbed and outsole. This comes as the company readies the opening of its brand-new showroom in New York City, which will be feted during market week on June 4. Now located at 1410 Broadway on the 10th floor, the showroom offers a more 'elevated presentation,' the executive described. 'I feel like it showcases the brands better in this new space.' Bottom line, Higgens wants buyers to be on the lookout for Dockers' elevated, technology-packed shoe collection this season. 'We're proud of where things are headed it feels like a fresh chapter for Dockers footwear.' This comes one week after brand management firm Authentic Brands Group inked a deal to acquire the Dockers brand from Levi Strauss & Co. for $311 million. The deal has the potential to ultimately reach up to $391 million through an $80 million earn-out opportunity based on the performance of the Dockers business under Authentic's ownership in the years ahead. At press time no word if Dockers' new owners will reorganize its license structure for the label. So, for now, the brand's shoe category will remain with Genesco. In the full fiscal year 2025, Genesco reported net sales were flat at $2.3 billion compared to fiscal 2024. The company reported a net loss of $18.9 million in fiscal 2025 compared to a loss of $16.8 million last year. The company added that overall sales for the year increased 3 percent at Journeys, offset by a decrease of 6 percent at Johnston & Murphy and an 11 percent decrease at Genesco Brands, while sales at Schuh were flat. Looking ahead, the company expects net sales in fiscal 2026 to be flat to up 1 percent compared to fiscal 2025. Genesco reports first quarter 2026 earnings on June 4. At just 23 years old, this multi-hyphenate artist is gaining confidence and understands what he wants and how to achieve it. Shreveport violinist QMajor triumphed over bullying, achieving success in music QMajor discussed the significance of this single and his expectations for the future. 'Sometimes you just gotta let the world do what the world does, you know, let the algorithm do what it does,' said QMajor. He's now in a space where he's comfortable making music and putting it out for the world to hear. Since becoming an acclaimed artist, others have tried to label or categorize his musical style according to their own perceptions. However, they fail to recognize that black individuals are not a monolith. QMajor is like a tree with roots that extend into every genre of music. Everything we know about Warzone Ranked Play update in Season 3 Reloaded

Image via: Activision The competitive scene of Ranked Play has been shaken to its very foundation with Call of Duty: Warzone Season 3 Reloaded. From an overhaul of Skill Rating (SR) to tighter constraints on weapons and perks, the mid-season update has left an indelible mark on the players' path to the ranks in Verdansk. Here is a brief rundown about all the major changes that have come forth in the recent update. Entry requirements and qualification challenges Ranked Play is no longer an immediate entry. To qualify for it, players must now prove themselves in either Resurgence or Battle Royale matches. Specifically, in Resurgence, players must finish among the top six squads, whereas, in Battle Royale, they must finish among the top 15. This whole process must be accomplished a total of twenty times. Only these core modes will contribute to gaining access to Ranked Play; the matches played in Battle Royale Casual or Bootcamp won't count. When Ranked Play is unlocked, Trios will allow for 150 players again. The goal here remains the same, to climb the ranks by gaining SR from eliminations, placements, and outplaying opponents of higher ranks. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How can a 3-month-old get cancer? The new ranking system starts players from Bronze and allows them to transition through Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Crimson, and Iridescent. The Top 250 are for the best of the best. The set ranks from 1 to 3 under Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond do allow for some granulation of progression, while the only exceptions would be on Iridescent and Top 250 ranks. This new SR update rewards scale even based on what ranks your opponents are. To give an example, an SR increase beyond one's own rank is awarded in Platinum for killing down a Diamond player. So players are encouraged to take calculated risks for aggressive and tactical play. Deployment fees return This costs rank advancement. Every Ranked match requires a Deployment Fee based on the current rank of the player. This way, it is ensured that higher-ranked players are challenged and cannot simply passive their way to maintaining their rank. Weapon, Perk, and Item Restriction: For the sake of competitive integrity, Warzone will have all-encompassing restrictions. While the list allows all Modern Warfare weapons, the only crossover weapon allowed is the Black Ops 6's Blade Launcher. Prohibited attachments include: Thermal optics of every kind. Under-barrel launchers like Drill Charge and HE Launchers. CHF Barrel. Fire Mods like Dragon's Breath and Goblin Mk2 mini-rockets. Other notable restrictions: Birds-eye and Specialist Wildcard: Bandolier Loot: Ammo Satchel Vehicles: Cargo Truck Contracts: Big Game Bounty Miscellaneous: One-shot shot to the head, proximity chat, and Live Pings. The above changes impose fairness, focus, and competition among all players. WARZONE: Major SEASON 3 RELOADED UPDATE Fully Revealed! Verdansk Updates, New Weapons, & More! Rewards and others Progression through Ranked is much more than simply for bragging rights; players can earn exclusive cosmetics such as weapon skins, blueprints, and much more. The mid-season update will essentially reset your grind, giving both veterans and new players alike a brand-new start on May 1, 2025. Thus far, Season 3 Reloaded has made Warzone Ranked Play more structured and loaded with rewards and definitely more intense. With skill-based SR gains, tougher restrictions, and a pathway for entry, Verdansk has now become a true battleground for elite players.
