Microsoft adds over 50 ‘Retro Classics' to Game Pass

Microsoft has announced that a new 'Retro Classics' collection is now available to Game Pass subscribers. Reminiscent of the Nintendo Switch Online classic games library, the collection includes Pitfall, Grand Prix, and more than 50 other Activision titles from the 1980s and 1990s. It's not as many titles as the 1,300 retro games that Antstream, Microsoft's partner in the offering, has available on its streaming service, but it won't cost Game Pass subscribers any extra. Retro Classics, which Microsoft writes is part of its 'commitment to game preservation and backwards compatibility, is available on Xbox consoles, PC, or via Xbox cloud gaming on compatible devices like some LG and Samsung smart TVs, and the Meta Quest headset. Other games included in the collection include Cosmic Ark, Mechwarrior 2: 31st Century Combat, and Atlantis. Based on screenshots, it looks like the collection will include titles from the original PlayStation, the SNES, MS-DOS, and more. Players will be able to collect achievements and participate in events like tournaments and community challenges, as well. Microsoft says this is only the start: the collection will expand to include more than 100 games from Activision and Blizzard, eventually. Like Nintendo's retro collection, you're out of luck if you don't have Microsoft's gaming subscription, as the titles in the collection aren't available for sale separately. Antstream Arcade separately announced a temporary deal for Game Pass subscribers. Until June 4th, members can sign up for a year of access to Antstream's library, which includes more than 1,300 games, for $9.99 via the Microsoft Store.

Xbox Game Pass Retro Classics has over 50 old-school games for people over 50

Game Pass members can now play over 50 old-school games for free. Microsoft's Retro Classics is a library of old-school Activision and Blizzard games from the '80s and '90s, like Pitfall! and MechWarrior 2 . You can play on Xbox consoles, PCs and supported cloud gaming devices. Like Nintendo's Switch Online classics, the Game Pass version includes save states. That should come in handy for some of the excruciatingly difficult ones. Although there's no online multiplayer, you can play against friends locally in titles that support it. Police Quest (Sierra / Microsoft) Retro Classics includes Atari-era games like the pioneering platformer Pitfall! and its sequel Pitfall II: Lost Caverns , the bomb-catching game Kaboom! and the shoot-'em-up River Raid . Fans of early adventure games also have plenty to chew on. There's the groundbreaking text adventure Zork , as well as the Sierra classics Space Quest II and Police Quest . Just remember to connect a keyboard (or play on PC) for the latter three, or you won't get far. Microsoft says it will expand the collection over time, planning to eventually pass 100 games. GameSpot published a complete list of the 58 titles available at launch. Retro Classics is available today for all Game Pass tiers. You can find the collection here or by searching for and installing it on your Xbox console or in the Xbox on PC app.

Xbox Just Added 50+ Classic Activision Games To Game Pass

Surprise! If you are a Game Pass subscriber, you now have access to dozens and dozens of retro video games. And Xbox and Activision plan to add even more classic games in the future. On May 21, Xbox announced that over 50 retro Activision games were now available via a new app called Retro Classics. The new app is available only via Xbox Game Pass for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and streaming. It is available to all Game Pass subscribers, including Game Pass Core members (unless you live in Japan). Let's ignore that it should obviously have been called Xbox Retro Arcade, and instead focus on the new app. According to Xbox, Retro Classics is powered by Antstream Arcade's streaming game tech, which is a mostly solid way to instantly play tons of old games across many different platforms. The new app supports challenges, multiplayer, multiple saves, weekly tournaments, user profiles, and leaderboards. And yes, Retro Classics has achievements. Finally, you can get a nifty Xbox achievement for playing River Raid. 'This initiative is a step in our commitment to game preservation and backwards compatibility, allowing players to experience many timeless games on modern devices,' said Xbox in a post on the company's website. So what games are currently available on the Retro /Arcade/ Classics app? Here's some I spotted and tested: Kaboom!, Pitfall, Pitfall 2, River Raid, Grand Prix, Commando, Barnstorming, Fishing Derby, and Mech Warrior 2. Oh and Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist is available, too. That's a game that a young Geoff Keighley helped test back in the day, long before he had a whole game award show. According to Xbox, this is just the start. It plans on adding more Acitivison and Blizzard games to the app in the future. While I'm not a huge fan of streaming old games like this, and would prefer actual downloads and offline play, this is still better than nothing. It's nice to see Xbox finally digging into Activision's deep library of classic games and doing something with them after buying the publisher back in 2023. If Microsoft wants to own the entire game industry, the least it can do is make it easier to legally play the old stuff it gobbled up in the process. .
