US Senator Daines meets China's Vice Premier He Lifeng

BEIJING, March 22 (Reuters) - U.S. Senator Steve Daines, a strong supporter of President Donald Trump, met with China's economy tsar, Vice Premier He Lifeng, in Beijing on Saturday, according to a pool report. Daines will meet with Premier Li Qiang on Sunday, He told reporters as he greeted the Montana Republican at the Great Hall of the People. Daines' visit marks the first in-person meeting with top Chinese officials in Beijing by a U.S. politician since Trump returned to the White House and immediately ratcheted up trade tensions with the world's second-largest economy. In February and again in March, Trump imposed tariffs on all Chinese goods, accusing Beijing of not doing enough to stem the flow of fentanyl into the United States. In early April, Trump is expected to unleash a round of tariffs on all countries that tax U.S. imports, potentially including China.

US judge blocks Trump's bid to ban DEI by federal agencies, contractors

Feb 21 (Reuters) - A federal judge in Maryland on Friday temporarily blocked President Donald Trump from implementing bans on diversity, equity and inclusion programs at federal agencies and by businesses that contract with the federal government. U.S. District Judge Adam Abelson said the directives by Trump and an order urging the Department of Justice to investigate companies with DEI policies likely violate the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The orders are part of Trump's larger efforts to eradicate DEI initiatives, which critics say are discriminatory, from the government and the private sector. Abelson blocked Trump and several federal agencies from implementing the orders pending the outcome of a lawsuit by the city of Baltimore and three groups. "As Plaintiffs put it, 'efforts to foster inclusion have been widespread and uncontroversially legal for decades,'" wrote Abelson "Plaintiffs' irreparable harms include widespread chilling of unquestionably protected speech." Senior U.S. prosecutor resigns, citing demands to open probe into Biden-era contract

WASHINGTON, Feb 18 (Reuters) - The top federal prosecutor who supervised criminal cases at the Washington D.C. U.S. Attorney's office resigned on Tuesday, citing what she described as an improper demand by Trump-appointed officials to launch a criminal probe and pursue an asset freeze. In a letter to the interim U.S. Attorney Ed Martin reviewed by Reuters, the office's criminal chief Denise Cheung wrote that President Donald Trump's administration had ordered her to investigate a government contract awarded during Joe Biden's administration and pursue a freeze of the recipient's assets.
