Blind date: ‘A mullet is always going to make a strong first impression – and I'm a bit of a mullet-phobe!'

What were you hoping for?Not to have met him before, but to want to meet him again. First impressions? A mullet is always going to make a strong first impression – and I'm a bit of a mullet-phobe! But otherwise, a great smile and warm off the bat. What did you talk about? A balance of the meaningful (his move back from Australia, my work move) and the incidental (from World Book Day outfits to how to pick a melon). Most awkward moment? He brought me a pack of Revels, as he said they're like a blind date: you don't know what you're going to get. So I felt bad I didn't have a gift for him. Good table manners? Yes, even when shelling the prawns. Best thing about Sam? He's a great conversationalist, with an undertone of silliness (necessary for working with nine-year-olds). Blind date is Saturday's dating column: every week, two strangers are paired up for dinner and drinks, and then spill the beans to us, answering a set of questions. This runs, with a photograph we take of each dater before the date, in Saturday magazine (in the UK) and online at every Saturday. It's been running since 2009 – you can read all about how we put it together questions will I be asked? We ask about age, location, occupation, hobbies, interests and the type of person you are looking to meet. If you do not think these questions cover everything you would like to know, tell us what's on your mind. Can I choose who I match with? No, it's a blind date! But we do ask you a bit about your interests, preferences, etc – the more you tell us, the better the match is likely to be. Can I pick the photograph? No, but don't worry: we'll choose the nicest ones. What personal details will appear? Your first name, job and age. How should I answer? Honestly but respectfully. Be mindful of how it will read to your date, and that Blind date reaches a large audience, in print and online. Will I see the other person's answers? No. We may edit yours and theirs for a range of reasons, including length, and we may ask you for more details. Will you find me The One?We'll try! Marriage! Babies! Can I do it in my home town?Only if it's in the UK. Many of our applicants live in London, but we would love to hear from people living elsewhere. How to apply Email Would you introduce Sam to your friends? Yeah. Describe him in three words Thoughtful, cheerful and spontaneous. What do you think he made of you? I arrived quite chaotically after struggling to find the restaurant, but we quickly settled in for a fun evening. Did you go on somewhere? No, though we were the last to leave the restaurant after happily finishing a second bottle of wine. And … did you kiss? No, just a hug goodbye outside the station. If you could change one thing about the evening, what would it be? A more local match (he's Maidenhead, out west, and I'm east London). Marks out of 10? 8, for an enjoyable tapas-fuelled night. Would you meet again? Sam was great company, but we're in different places – quite literally. What were you hoping for? A nice evening with good company and some tasty food. Bonus points for finding a life partner. First impressions? Nice eyes, a creative type, confident. What did you talk about? The book industry. Pet cats. Our travels. Family. Festivals. Most awkward moment? Taking a gulp of a martini then spurting it back out. I forgot to sip it like a gentleman. Good table manners? Absolutely. Fairly shared tapas. No disputes over the patatas bravas. Best thing about Imogen? She showed genuine interest in my life. Conversation flowed well. Would you introduce Imogen to your friends? I would. Describe Imogen in three words. Bubbly, pretty and intelligent. What do you think she made of you? I'd like to think kind and interesting. Did you go on somewhere? We were the last to leave the restaurant, but went our separate ways at the station. And … did you kiss? Just a side-cheek kiss. If you could change one thing about the evening what would it be? Maybe to have enjoyed the tapas outside … or even in Spain for extra authenticity. Marks out of 10? 8. Would you meet again? As friends at a gig, show or festival, but not romantically. I think it was a mutual feeling. Imogen and Sam ate at Barrafina, London N1. Fancy a blind date? Email

Man from Northern Ireland is jailed in England after sexually assaulting woman at work party

A MAN from Northern Ireland has been jailed in England after sexually assaulting a woman at a work Christmas party. Matthew Revels, 42, of Armagh Road, Newry, targeted the victim at a hotel in Peterborough on December 3, 2022. At Huntingdon Law Courts last week, he was sentenced to two years and six months in prison, having previously pleading guilty to assault by penetration. Police say Revels had preyed on the victim while she was on the dance floor earlier in the evening, sliding his knee between her legs before 'grinding' her from behind. She moved away from him but Revels later managed to place the victim's hand on his crotch while they were both at the bar with a group of people. She immediately pulled her hand away and told him: "I know what you want and it's not happening." After the bar closed, the group went back to a hotel room at about midnight for drinks. 'Powerless state' The victim had a shot of sambuca but this resulted in her becoming unwell, so she went to the bathroom. Revels claimed he was going to check on the victim but while inside the bathroom, he carried out a sexual assault on her. After the assault, the victim struggled to breathe as a result of a panic attack and an ambulance was called. The victim told medics what had happened and officers arrested Revels, who was asleep in his hotel room. "The victim was in a powerless state — alone in a place unfamiliar to her while being very unwell," said DC Chris Enright of Cambridge Constabulary. "She was in no state to consent to any sexual activity. "And despite already being told earlier on in the evening that nothing was going to happen, Revels took it upon himself to take advantage of the victim and use sexual violence against her while she was at her most vulnerable." Revels was also handed a 10-year restraining order and ordered to sign the Sex Offenders' Register indefinitely. See More: Newry, Peterborough

Spartans reportedly trending for transfer portal defensive back prospect

Spartans reportedly trending for transfer portal defensive back prospect Michigan State football is reportedly in a good spot to land a transfer portal safety from Bowling Green Michigan State football is reportedly trending for a transfer portal prospect from the Mid-American Conference that played in 12 games as a freshman last year. Michigan State recruiting insider Justin Thind of 247Sports has entered a crystal ball prediction for the Spartans to land Bowling Green transfer safety Tracy Revels. Thind submitted the portal prediction on Saturday night. Revels played one season at Bowling Green, where he appeared in 12 games and recorded 40 tackles and one pass defended. He has three years of eligibility remaining. Revels reportedly visited Michigan State this weekend, and it appears that visit helped seal the deal in landing his commitment. No official timetable on when Revels could announce his commitment to the Spartans is known, but I would imagine it'll be coming soon. Thind is one of the best insiders around Michigan State sports, and this crystal ball prediction would suggest a deal is in place for Revels to join the Spartans. Rathkenny Revels 2025: A show like no other

This year's production, delivered a perfect mix of entertainment and nostalgia, just what was needed at the end of a long and wet winter. The show's variety was on full display with musical comedy delivered by Aoife Traynor and Charlie Cullen with Therapy, energetic children's performances such as The Doctors Sketch, and a spirited tribute to the Jackson Five. Shay Carry and Charlie Cullen had the crowd in stitches with Keep Going Til and The Jungle Medley, performed by the Junior Chorus, brought a riot of colour and powerful singing to the first half of the show. The second half opened with a powerful Queen medley by the Adult and Senior Choruses, followed by more comedy with the Bar Scene Sketch, Irish dancing, traditional music, and an unforgettable Eurovision section that celebrated Ireland's musical legacy. One of the standout moments came when Rathkenny's own Eimear Quinn, Ireland's 1996 Eurovision winner for 'The Voice' attended the show on April 6, in a touching nod to the ongoing connection between Rathkenny and Irish musical heritage. The comedy team brought more giggles with Now's Your Chance. A poignant tribute was also paid to the late Tom Kerrigan and late Jimmy Carry, a great comedy duo and legends of the Revels, who took their humour from the local stage to RTE television audiences. This was followed by Fonsie Goes to the Movies performed by the comedy team, which was also one of Tom Kerrigan's keynote sketches when taking part in Revels shows throughout the years. The final finale featured a stirring rendition of Champagne Supernova by Oasis, performed by the Adult Chorus, which provided a fitting and emotional end to a spectacular show. The magic of Rathkenny Revels lies not only in the performance, but in the people behind it. From direction and choreography (led by Vicky Kenny and Hannah Murphy) to performers, contributors, costumes, lighting, sound, catering, stage management, volunteers, committee members and more, every detail reflected the hard work, dedication and team effort behind the show. Special thanks were extended also to sponsors, supporters, local media, Meath County Council and countless volunteers who help make The Rathkenny Revels happen year after year. Here's to another 61 years of laugher, music and magic in Rathkenny,
