Two men charged with trafficking nearly 2.5kg of meth at Tawau Airport
TAWAU: Two men were charged at the magistrate's court here today with trafficking nearly 2.5kg of methamphetamine at Tawau Airport on May 17.
Leong Kong Wait, 44, and Revinson Ester Anak Mawat, 20, nodded in understanding when the charge was read before magistrate Don Stiwin Malanjum.
No plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
According to the charge, both men are accused of jointly trafficking 2,493.45g of methamphetamine at the Arrival Hall of Tawau Airport between 9.25pm and 10.15pm on May 17.
They were charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same act, and read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
If convicted, they face the death penalty or life imprisonment, along with no fewer than 12 strokes of the rotan, if not sentenced to death.
No bail was offered, and the court fixed July 7 for mention pending the outcome of the chemistry report.
Deputy public prosecutor Shearil Aizad Murnizam prosecuted while the accused were not represented.
