Texas wins 3 of 5 individual swimming events at NCAA championships to stay atop team standings
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (AP) — Texas won three of the five individual swimming events Friday night at the NCAA championships to stay atop the team standings, and Florida claimed the other two. Rex Maurer of Texas held off Ohio State's Tristan Jankovics to win the 400-yard individual medley in a personal-best time of 3:34.00 for his second individual title this week. Advertisement Luke Hobson got ahead of the field to win his third straight NCAA title in the 200 freestyle, breaking his own NCAA, American, and school record at 1:28.33. His Texas teammate Chris Guiliano came in second. Two years ago, Hobson finished in 1:30.43. Texas' Hubert Kos edged Florida's Jonny Marshall at the wall by two one-hundredths of a second to win the 100 backstroke in a world record time of 43.20. Marshall gave the Gators their best finish in the event in 20 years. Florida's Josh Liendo defended his title in the 100 butterfly with a personal-best 43.06 — the second-fastest time in history. Julian Smith backed up his SEC Tournament title in the 100 breaststroke with a winning time of 49.55. He's the first Gator to win the event in program history. Advertisement Carson Tyler edged his Indiana teammate Quentin Henninger for his second 3-meter diving national title. In the final event of the night Florida and Texas went 1-2 in the 400 medley relay, with the Gators winning at 2:56.10. Texas is leading the team standings with 368 points after Day 3. (AP) — Rex Maurer won the first race of Day 2 at the NCAA men's swimming and diving championships and his Texas teammate Hubert Kos took the second event as the Longhorns ended Thursday night in first place with 190 points. Maurer took the 500-yard freestyle in 4:05.35 ahead of teammate Luke Hobson to clinch a 1-2 finish for Texas, which made a big jump atop the team standings. Kos, an Olympic gold medalist, held off a late surge by Cal's Destin Lasco in the 200 individual medley with a personal-best time of 1:37.91. It was the same time Lasco won the event last season at the national championships. Tennessee's Jordan Crooks became a two-time champion in the 50 freestyle when he finished in 17.91. It was his fifth performance under 18 seconds in the event. His teammate Guilherme Caribe finished third. Crooks also broke a program record with a 17.82 leadoff split in the 200 freestyle relay to help the Vols win in a meet record 1:12.84. Florida, which was seeking a four-peat in the event, finished third. Indiana senior Quentin Henninger won the 1-meter diving for his first career NCAA title. Stanford's Jack Ryan captured second for his highest NCAA finish. California is second in the team standings with 159.5 points and Indiana third at 146. The four-day event continues on Friday with six swimming titles and one diving at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center. ___
