Rex Ryan's Fourth of July festivities served as an ESPN reunion with former colleagues Sam Ponder and Sage Steele, the latter of whom documented the celebrations on social media and called out the ex-Jets coach's cheeky attire. 'David Pollack is stuck with me as the big brother I never (jk) wanted, and I was texting with Kirk Herbstreit the day before I got fired,' Ponder said in an Instagram Q&A last month. 'Rece Davis is my forever favorite. I'll never forget how all 3 of them loved Jesus and treated people. I will be a 'college gameday' fan as long as they continue to make it about the people. It's such a special show.' 6 Sage Steele spoke about her friendship with Rex Ryan in her Instagram post from July 2025. Instagram Ponder had originally joined ESPN in 2011. She remains close with Steele, who is two years removed from her ESPN departure. 'Having successfully settled my case with ESPN/Disney, I have decided to leave so I can exercise my first amendment rights more freely,' she posted on X in August 2023. 'I am grateful for so many wonderful experiences over the past 16 years and am excited for my next chapter!' Steele sued ESPN and its parent company Disney in April 2022 over circumstances that led to her being sidelined in 2021. The lawsuit alleged Steele was retaliated against over comments made about the company's COVID-19 vaccine mandate and how it violated her right to free speech.

Ex-NFL head coach stuns fans with NSFW shirt to celebrate Fourth of July
ESPN analyst and ex-NFL coach Rex Ryan celebrated the Fourth of July with two former co-workers - but drew snickers for his NSFW and punny t-shirt. Ryan was joined by a pair of former on-air personalities at the 'Worldwide Leader': Sage Steele and Sam Ponder. Steele and Ponder, both of whom have been critical of their former employer in the past and have since expressed their more conservative political views not in line with the company, were seen flanking Ryan standing on a lakeside dock. But what attracted attention was Ryan's red t-shirt featuring a patriotic looking firework with the caption: 'Just here to bang'. Steele shared the photo to her X account, finding the fun in the suggestive phrase on Ryan's shirt. 'If Rex Ryan's t-shirt doesn't make your day like it made mine (and @samponder) not sure what will. Happy belated 4th of July!,' Steele captioned the post. Plenty of fans and even some others who work in sports reacted to the photo. Ole Miss head football coach Lane Kiffin quote tweeted the photo with a facepalm emoji. 'Gotta be the most American shirt ive seen in years,' said one user on the site. Another remarked, 'I love that conservative women have a sense of humor. Also I need this shirt.' Ryan had been linked with a return to coaching at the end of last season - including a potential reunion with his former team, the New York Jets. But after the Jets hired former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Ryan hadn't been linked with a move to another team.

Randy Moss to return to ESPN's ‘Sunday NFL Countdown' this season
After being forced to miss the final two months of last year due to a cancer diagnosis, ESPN expects Hall of Famer receiver Randy Moss to return to a full-time role on 'Sunday NFL Countdown,' the network confirmed to The Athletic. Following his hiatus last season, Moss joined Rex Ryan, Tedy Bruschi, Alex Smith and host Mike Greenberg during the Super Bowl. 'Randy's return on Super Bowl Sunday was an emotional lift — not just for our team but for the entire football community — and knowing he will resume his full Sunday NFL Countdown schedule, beginning in Week 1, has been the highlight of the offseason,' ESPN said in a statement to The Athletic. In December, Moss, 48, revealed his cancer diagnosis on an Instagram Live video. He said then he had a six-day stint in a Charlotte, N.C., area hospital following surgery to treat cancer found in the bile duct between the pancreas and the liver. Moss also shared that a stent was inserted into his liver due to complications from his condition, and he would undergo radiation and chemotherapy treatment for the cancer. His recovery has progressed to the point where he is expected to join the 'Sunday NFL Countdown' crew every Sunday. It will be his 10th year with ESPN.

Rex Ryan's one-man play ‘The Monk': An intriguing show but aspects could be whipped into better shape
'The Monk' runs at the Glass Mask Theatre, Dublin until June 28 This is a terrific and vital piece of theatre, written, directed and performed by Rex Ryan. Ragged at the edges, it would have benefitted from a more objective director who could whip its multimedia content into better shape. But it impressively bashes around the interior of Gerard Hutch's mind like a bumper car, hitting off things in anarchic spasms.
