1 in 5 northeast Tennessee children are food insecure, Map the Meal Gap report says
KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) – With the school year ending and concerns about food insecurity rising, local food banks like Second Harvest of Northeast Tennessee are working to ensure they can help feed families this summer. 'If we look at food insecurity rates in all of our counties, we see that rural hunger and child food insecurity is, at its highest level that it ever has been,' Second Harvest Food Bank Executive Director Rhonda Chafin said. The 15th annual Map the Meal Gap report was recently released. It revealed that 14 million children across the country are food insecure, one in five in northeast Tennessee. Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter 'over capacity' after hoarding situations Chafin said recent funding cuts and increased demand put food banks in a difficult situation. 'There's so many areas that we're seeing those small cuts and they add up and all those areas, we use those funds to purchase food to be able to distribute to these communities, especially through our direct service programs,' Chafin said. 'And so when we don't have those resources, it makes it very difficult.' Chafin said the next big challenge will be dealing with proposed cuts to the SNAP program. 'It's one of the most difficult years and landscapes that we're looking at in a long time,' Chafin said. 'And it brings, you know, concern, it brings worry that we want to make sure that we have the resources to meet those needs. And we're going to continue to work hard to do that and, make sure that we stretch those dollars and help individuals that need our support most.' Chafin did provide some good news, detailing how their summer food service program, which anticipates serving more than 6,000 kids, won't be affected. 'We're really excited that we've been able to expand that program,' Chafin said. 'We've been able to keep our AmeriCorps volunteers. That's come down from federal support. So those are all great things that will help us, feed more children this summer. We know that this is a great program because it's reimbursable. It's just like the school lunch program. And, we're really excited about this program because we know that we have the resources that we need.' Second Harvest Food Bank needs the community's help to meet its needs of donations and volunteers. More information can be found on their website, Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — On Saturday, letter carriers across the U.S. will collect non-perishable food items left out for them to help fight hunger. The annual National Association of Letter Carriers' Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is held on the second Saturday of May each year. Bristol man charged with murder in 3-year-old's death Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee is encouraging people in the area to donate shelf-stable food items to help their neighbors. Non-perishable food donations should be placed in a bag on or near the mailbox, and the letter carriers will collect them. 'There is an urgent need for food donations right now,' Rhonda Chafin, the executive director of the food bank, said in a news release. 'The food bank is providing food to over 43,000 people each month, and more donations are necessary to ensure that we are able to keep up with the demand.' According to Second Harvest, the Letter Carriers' Food Drive is the largest food drive for the local food bank every year. In 2024, more than 36,000 pounds of food were collected to fight food insecurity in Northeast Tennessee. Second Harvest hopes to exceed that amount in 2025. The National Association of Letter Carriers donated $1,000 to the food bank to start the 2025 event. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
