Western United keep heat on Auckland with Glory win
Western United have turned up the heat on A-League Men leaders Auckland FC, claiming a 3-1 win over Perth Glory to cut the gap at the top of the table to just five points. After Auckland drew 1-1 with Western Sydney earlier on Saturday, John Aloisi's United seized the opportunity to maintain outright second place with four games to go. The win comes amid speculation over Aloisi's coaching future, with the Socceroos great considered an outside chance in the Matildas' coaching race, and also attracting interest elsewhere in the A-League. Red-hot midfielder Rhys Bozinovski delivered United the lead inside three minutes at Ironbark Fields. That's now four goals in three games for @wufcofficial's rising star Rhys Bozinovski 🌟It didn't take long for the 21-year-old midfielder to pick up right where he left off! 🔥📺 Watch #WUNvPER live and exclusive NOW on Paramount+ — Isuzu UTE A-League (@aleaguemen) April 5, 2025 Perth sensation Jaylan Pearman equalised with a wonderful long-range strike in the 55th minute, before Taras Gomulka's calamitous own goal gifted United the lead 10 minutes later. Michael Ruhs teed up fellow substitute Ramy Najjarine to wrap up three points in the 86th minute. United are chasing the premiership but the top Australian team will also earn a place in next year's Asian Champions League Elite (ACL Elite). As things stand, Auckland (46 points) lead United (41), Melbourne City (40), who beat Central Coast on Saturday, Western Sydney (36) and Melbourne Victory (36). United travel to face Western Sydney next Sunday and host Auckland in the final round. United took the lead when Bozinovski had his first shot saved by Oli Sail but buried the rebound in style to earn his fourth goal in three games. Western have scored more goals this season (48) than any other in their history with four games remaining. WHAT A STRIKE! 🚀🔥@PerthGloryFC young gun Jaylan Pearman unleashed a stunner from the edge of the box. 📺 Watch #WUNvPER live and exclusive NOW on Paramount+ — Isuzu UTE A-League (@aleaguemen) April 5, 2025 Perth were sharper out of the blocks in the second half, and equalised when Pearman danced along the edge of the area then let rip with a wonderful strike. But United regained their lead in the 65th minute when Gomulka attempted to block a Bozinovski cross but mis-hit the ball and it wrongfooted the Glory defence to nestle in the back of the net. United sealed victory when Ruhs burst forward and slipped the ball to Najjarine to score. Perth return home to face Adelaide next Saturday.

Botic sends message as Western United thump Jets
Western United have kept their hopes of a late-season push for the A-League Men premiership on track after breezing past Newcastle 6-2 at McDonald Jones Stadium. With Auckland FC shipping a 90th-minute equaliser to draw 2-2 with Central Coast earlier on Sunday, the three points moved United to within four of the table-toppers. And though the Kiwi-based side have a game in hand, they will also have to travel to face John Aloisi's unit on the season's final day. The rout was started in the sixth minute by Noah Botic, whose subsequent 'call me' celebration appeared a response to his absence from Socceroos boss Tony Popovic's squad for World Cup qualifiers against Indonesia and China this month. Better call Botic 😏📞A timely goal from our in form no.19 to give us the lead in Newcastle 💥#NEWvWUN — Western United FC (@wufcofficial) March 16, 2025 The 23-year-old leads the ALM with eleven goals amidst a breakout campaign but was overlooked in the 26-player team named on Friday, Popovic opting for Brandon Borrello, Adam Taggart and Kusini Yengi as his striking options. An own goal from Mark Natta made it 2-0 just two minutes after the opener, Rhys Bozinovski's second goal in as many weeks made it three in the 29th minute before Botic set up Riku Danzaki for a fourth in just the 35th. The temperatures in the 30s and his side playing their third game in a week, Jets coach Rob Stanton swung the changes at halftime but Bozinovski grabbed his brace in making it 5-0 in the 53rd minute. Rhys Bozinovski's first career double is a thing of beauty 🖼️👏Two top quality finishes. He's tearing Newcastle Jets apart on their own turned 21 last week. Remember the #NEWvWUN live now on Paramount+. — Isuzu UTE A-League (@aleaguemen) March 16, 2025 The hosts fought to make the margin more respectable as substitute Charles M'Mombwa scored in the 65th minute and Angus Thurgate turned the ball into his net in the 72nd, but United fired one last salvo in the 85th when Michael Ruhs broke in behind and made it six. That made it 16 goals in four straight wins for United, while Newcastle sit ninth after their seven-game unbeaten run was snapped.
