Airdrie boss to hold player talks, but says several are already on board
Rhys McCabe will rebuild for next season in the Championship Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe will sit down with players to discuss their futures over the next week or so, but is pleased that several are already signed up for next season. Having endured a nightmare injury scenario, McCabe is looking forward to having a full squad to choose from in pre-season – once his stars have recharged their batteries. Airdrie's season came to an end on Saturday with a 0-0 Championship play-off final second leg draw at home to Cove Rangers, having won 2-1 away on Wednesday night to secure their status in the second tier. A relieved McCabe said: 'It has been very hard, because a lot has been riding on this game for the club, in terms of what division we're going to be playing in. 'Over the next, I imagine, week or so, we'll try and have a sit down with everyone, have that face-to-face, and go through it. 'The good thing that I will say is that a lot of these boys are already signed up and under contract, which is a real positive. 'We know we have a good group and core, going into pre-season. We'll get bodies back fit from injury, have a good pre-season and if everybody's healthy and raring to go, hopefully we start next season positively.' Having been involved in Premiership play-offs last season, Airdrie were at the opposite end of the spectrum and only avoid relegation outright due to Hamilton Accies' 15-point deduction for a number of offences. McCabe said: 'We'll all be better for this – coaches, people, players – so we've got to make sure we use these experiences and kick on. 'It has been a long season emotionally, and I think mentally quite draining as well, so it's important that we switch off, recharge the batteries. 'I'll give the boys a bit of time off and then we'll get back to work next week.' On the game, played in scorching temperatures, McCabe said: 'I think we got it done in the first leg. In that game we had chances to score more, I think Adam Frizzell has one towards the end where he hits the post. 'Today was more a case of you could see it in the boys' legs – it wasn't the fact they were done and dusted, but just the nervous energy and the mental magnitude of the game. 'Cove had nothing to lose, they had a goal to claw back and it was one of those games where the pressure was off for them. 'I thought we handled that quite well, we looked solid, and won ugly, which is not something that will always get levelled at my team.'

Airdrie boss says staying in Championship is his career highlight
Rhys McCabe says the Diamonds did well to show their gritty side Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe says staying in the Scottish Championship this season is the biggest achievement of his managerial career so far. McCabe brought the Diamonds up from League One to the Championship, and had them competing in the Premiership play-offs last term. But after a long season, McCabe says coming out the other side of what has been a tough season means a lot. He said: 'We've had a great taste of success at this club, I have certainly personally, and it was always about getting these moments throughout my career. 'To be honest it has probably been the biggest highlight of my career. 'Everything is great when you're doing well, you're winning trophies and seeing the positives, but to come through the other end of what has been a difficult season and get to the other side, end the season on a high, we'll learn from it. 'I don't think we were at our best., I think we can play a hell of a lot better,, but given the magnitude, probably for ourselves, that's not surprising. 'Without being disrespectful to Cove, I think there was more on the line for us, as a club, and we showed the side that was probably in question, the gritty, ugly, nasty side of he game, keeping that clean sheet, and something that's not been needed too much from us. 'Football is a game of learning, we're a young squad, I'm a young manager myself, I'm only in the job three or four years."

Airdrie 0 (2), Cove Rangers 0 (1): Stalemate sees Airdrie stay up
Rhys McCabe's side did enough to get over the line Airdrie retained their Championship status for next season with an aggregate win over Cove Rangers after a 0-0 draw at New Broomfield. Neither side got to grips with a tense game played in scorching temperatures, and at the end of a punishing season for both sides. Both sides had a good chance in the first half with Lewis McGrattan denied by a fine flying save from Cove's Nick Suman, before Cad Melrose blocked well from Adam Emslie. The second half was cagey, with few instances of note. Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe made two changes to the side that beat Cove 2-1 at the Balmoral Stadium on Wednesday. Aidan Wilson and Rhys Armstrong came in for Sam Graham and Liam McStravick. Counterpart Paul Hartley made one change to his Cove Rangers side, as Adam Emslie came in for veteran Mitch Megginson. Airdrie threatened in the first minute, but Chris Mochrie headed Adam Frizzell's corner from the right past the near post. The Diamonds went close again in six minutes when Ben Wilson darted down the right and fed Lewis McGrattan, but his shot was well saved by Nick Suman. Cove went close in 13 minutes when Alex Bannon missed a ball into defence and Adam Emslie had a low shot well blocked at the bottom left corner. Dylan MacDonald didn't connect well enough to a Lewis Strapp cross in 22 minutes as Airdrie threatened again. Declan Glass tried a curling shot that flew over the top right corner in 41 minutes. Ben Wilson tried to put the result beyond doubt in 73 minutes but curled his shot round the right post. AIRDRIE: Melrose, MacDonald, A.
