Telangana weather: IMD forecasts light to moderate rain and thunderstorms across state in next 5 days
Telangana is likely to witness light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places across the state in the next five days, India Meteorological Department (IMD)'s Hyderabad Centre said Thursday. Amid persistent heatwave-like conditions across the state, the sudden showers are expected to bring down the temperatures. Starting Thursday, as many as 14 districts — Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahbubabad, Warangal, Hanmakonda, Jangaon, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, and Medchal Malkajgiri — are very likely to receive thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, the IMD forecast said. A yellow alert has been issued for these districts, and the same weather conditions may prevail over the state till the morning of May 5. However, maximum temperatures in the northern Telangana districts such as Adilabad, Jagtial, Komarambheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Karimangar, Peddapalli, Rajanna Sircilla and eastern districts such as Bhadradri Kothagudem, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Khammam, and Mulugu may hover around 41 to 44 degree Celsius. On Wednesday, the highest maximum temperature recorded in the state was 44.5 degree Celsius in Adilabad, followed by 44.4 degree in Jagtial, 44.3 degree in Nirmal, and 44.1 degree in Nizamabad. However, all 33 districts have recorded maximum temperatures above 40 degree Celsius. In the state capital, Hyderabad, the highest recorded temperature was 41.5 degree recorded at Musheerabad and Moosapet. According to IMD, the North-South Trough, which continued from Northwest Madhya Pradesh to South Tamil Nadu Tuesday, has formed from the surface circulation formed over Southwest Rajasthan and its adjoining areas at around 5.30 am Wednesday and has extended up to 1.5 km above mean sea level over West Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Interior Karnataka and North Kerala and is currently continuing there. An IMD official said that thunderstorm activity during the summers is a normal phenomenon as the north and south trough is formed. 'We are expecting today in eastern Telangana and tomorrow for central Telangana,' the official said. Meanwhile, this year in the wake of rising temperatures and severe heat conditions, Telangana recently declared heatwave as a state-specific disaster, and announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the family of victims dying due to heatwave or sunstroke. Authorities have put in place certain norms for assistance from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) in case of deaths due to heat wave, sunstroke, and sunburn. Authorities have to ensure that the death is caused by to heatwave as defined by IMD. Also, if the deceased is a farmer enrolled under the Rhythu Bima scheme, the family can avail one of the two ex gratia — Rhythu Bima or ex-gratia due to heatwave, whichever is higher. As a procedure, the district collector would have to ensure that the district medical health officer (DMHO) or the authorised officers at the district level shall diagnose that the death was based on the history of exposure to high ambient temperature and the reasonable exclusion of other causes of hyperthermia.
