South Australian trainer Richard Jolly tackles Bel Esprit Stakes with gun sprinter Aviatress
The Robert Sangster Stakes didn't go to plan for Aviatress, but trainer Richard Jolly is hopeful his sprinting mare can rediscover winning ways in Saturday's Listed Bel Esprit Stakes at Caulfield. Aviatress returned to form with a fourth placing in last start's Straight Six (1200m) at Flemington, three weeks after finishing second last in the Group 1 Sangster (1200m) at Morphettville. • Under pressure a long way from home, the Sangster run remains a little bemusing to Jolly, but the trainer was pleased to see the stakes-winning mare back among the action at Flemington, where she was beaten less than a length. 'She just had a bit of an off day in the Sangster, we're not sure what was wrong to be honest,' Jolly, who trains in partnership with daughter, Chantelle, said. 'Her blood was a bit ordinary after the run but she bounced back pretty quickly. 'She ran really well the other day down the straight, if she could've been on that outside section, it was playing a little bit better where the winner came down. 'There wasn't much in it but it certainly would've made a bit of a difference.' The heavily-backed Aviatress is a class above first-up in the Listed Matrice Stakes, grabbing her second Stakes honour & sixth victory from 12 starts 🚀 Jake Toeroek & @RJollyRacing claim their respective doubles ðŸ' — (@Racing) March 29, 2025 Saturday's assignment will be the mare's final run this preparation, she won the Matrice Stakes first-up at Morphettville, a second career stakes win. 'She pulled up well, we thought we would roll the dice and give her one more run before a break,' he said. 'It's not an easy field, if anything it looks a bit tougher, but she's going well and her best is certainly good enough. 'She won't have a long spell, but she'll probably have 3-4 weeks and we'll probably look at some mares stakes race throughout the spring.' • No Frankie, no worries for Giga Kick in Group 1 attack Aviatress will be ridden by Zac Spain and is a $11 chance with Sportsbet for Saturday's Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m). Jolly also has last start winner Star Sirius in a Benchmark 78 (1200m), and Pudding in a Benchmark 84 (2000m) on the nine-race Caulfield card. 'Darren Thomas (Seymour Bloodstock) will probably breed from her (Star Sirius) I'd say, so it was good to get a win at Flemington on her CV, it wasn't a surprise, we didn't take her over there guessing, we thought she was up to those kind of races,' he said. 'She's in good form, I'm sure she'll give a good sight. 'Pudding's last couple of runs have been good actually, on paper its just fifth and sixth but he's had no luck in either race. 'I'm really pleased with how he's going, he just needs a bit of luck in the race which he hasn't had.' Jolly has 12 runners across Victoria and South Australia on Saturday, and he's taking the stable's lone runner to Hawker, with veteran gelding Shakespeare tackling the Hawker Cup (1750m). 'We've got all these runners and I'm doing the Hawker run,' he said. 'We're leaving tomorrow morning, we'll get up there and stay the night.' Jolly has also bid farewell to stable star See You In Heaven, the six-time stakes winner was sold for $1m at Tuesday's Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast. 'You know its always going to come to an end at some stage,' Jolly said. 'She's rising six (years old) and we bought her as a yearling, you certainly get attached to them. 'She couldn't win a Group 1 race, but it was like winning one, getting $1m for her. We thought she was pretty valuable but to actually get that much was pretty amazing. 'All the owners were rapt with what she achieved. 'I don't think I'll get another horse like her, in 22 starts she never raced out of stakes grade, it's pretty hard to achieve that with something else.'

Speedy filly Out Of Square scores fourth win in five starts at Murray Bridge
She's no flyer on the training track, but Out Of Square is bringing her best on race day. The speedy daughter of Hellbent nailed a fourth win in five starts at Murray Bridge on Saturday, as Richard and Chantelle Jolly continued a barnstorming run of form this month. Settling tailed off in a field of nine, jockey Jake Toeroek steered Out Of Square ($4.80 Sportsbet) to the outside at the 500m as she unleashed a powerful sprint to overhaul her rivals in a Benchmark 68 over 1200m. 'She's been a bit of a surprise packet really, at home she doesn't really show much, but it comes to race day and she really switches on,' Chantelle Jolly said. 'With the blinkers on her last two starts, it's helped her travelling in the run, at home you can hardly get her out of a canter – it's good for the connections.' • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. Toeroek now has an unblemished record of three wins from three rides on the filly, who is set to tackle the $105,000 Racing Rewards 3YO Plate (1200m) at Murray Bridge on June 14 before a possible stakes tilt. 'She's a mare that we keep pretty fresh at home, there's a rewards race coming up in three weeks, she'll go there and after that we might give her a little freshen up and look at something like the Lightning, try and get some stakes placing on her,' she said. 'Obviously we'll take it one run at a time, but that will be the goal.' • 'That was serious, wasn't it?': Antino makes Doomben Cup a one-act affair It was the first win of a race-to-race double for the Jolly yard, who also saluted with Great Maximus in race three. The father-daughter duo have been in a purple patch, scoring eight winners over the past fortnight, and notched a 400th winner as a training partnership with Star Sirius at Flemington last Saturday. Snoopy Now and Eroica were also impressive winners on Saturday. Eroica secured a riding double for leading apprentice Rochelle Milnes, after she won earlier in the day aboard Lake's Folly. Crown Mint ($26) pulled off a boilover, the gelding flying home under Taylor Johnstone to win a Benchmark 66 (1800m) for trainers Gordon Richards and Damien Moyle. • Lindsay Park declares War in Stradbroke It was a special day for apprentice jockey Caitlin Tootell, with the talented hoop nailing a first metro win aboard Novela ($13) for Michael Hickmott. Tootell allowed the gelding to roll along in front, stretching out to a lead of eight lengths at one stage. The pair looked vulnerable at the 300m as the chasing pack reeled them in, but the son of Valentia remarkably fought back to poke his head out on the line. Tootell had family trackside to celebrate the milestone. 'I heard them across the line, I didn't even know if I had it, but I kind of did because of the screaming,' Tootell said post-race. 'Thanks to Michael for putting me on, it's a pick-up ride so anything could happen. 'It's a relief, a big relief, (thanks to) my boss (Travis Doudle), my ex-bosses Shayne and Chelsea Cahill, my family and all my friends.' Victories with Lake's Folly and Novela saw Hickmott nail a double at his home track, splitting training honours with the Jolly's on the nine-race card.

Co-trainers John O'Shea, Tom Charlton are all aboard the ‘Poon Train' as star Hong Kong Matthew Poon partners Klondike in Doomben Cup
All aboard the 'Poon Train' bound for Saturday's Group 1 Doomben Cup. Hong Kong jockey Matthew Poon, who cut his teeth as an apprentice under South Australian trainer Richard Jolly, will ride English import Klondike for co-trainers John O'Shea and Tom Charlton in the $1m feature race over 2000m. And Jolly believes riding the 50-1 chance in the Doomben Cup will be like a walk in the park for the 31-year-old Poon compared to the intense pressure of racing in the Asian mecca of Hong Kong. Poon worked under Jolly for two years from 2015, riding 117 winners and being crowned South Australia Champion Apprentice jockey in the 2015-16 season. 'I still keep in contact with him regularly on WhatsApp,' Jolly said. 'Me and my mates usually go over there for the International meeting (in December) and catch up with him. He's a good kid. 'He progressed through the ranks really quickly (in South Australia) and has become one of the top 10 jockeys in Hong Kong.' Charlton and O'Shea have only been in charge of five-year-old Klondike for just one race – the Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m) at Randwick last month when he finished 10th – after the lightly-raced gelding was transferred from William Haggas ' stable. @yorkracecourse Listed success for the son of Galileo 🥇 — The Racing App (@TheRacingApp) June 15, 2024 • 'They'll have to carry me back': Cejay Graham dreams of Doomben Cup upset 'He's a nice staying horse, he wants further than 2000m,' Charlton said about the son of Galileo. 'He'll be one where we'll probably see the best of him in the spring.' Charlton said the Caulfield Cup (2400m) and Melbourne Cup (3200m) were possible spring targets for Klondike. Klondike is a $101 chance in the TAB in its all-in market for the Doomben Cup ahead of final acceptances at 9am on Tuesday. Poon secured the Doomben Cup ride on Klondike through the horse's owner, Matthew Li Man-hei, who asked him to take on the hit-and-run mission. Currently seventh in the Hong Kong Jockeys Premiership with 34 victories, Poon nabbed a career-best win aboard Straight Arron in the $A1m Group 2 Chairman's Trophy (1600m) at Sha Tin in late March. But don't for a moment think that Poon will be letting success go to his head. 'He's a really good lad, there was no fanfare about him,' Jolly said. 'All he did was eat, sleep and ride. He was really focused on where he wanted to go in his career and he's achieved it. 'I couldn't say a bad thing about him. He's got to where he has through his determination and he just wanted to strive to get better all the time.'
