Ribbon-cutting held for newly renovated Hope Lodge
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The American Cancer Society held a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony Friday at Charleston's newly renovated Hope Lodge.
The facility, now officially named the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation Hope Lodge, offers free lodging to cancer patients and their caregivers traveling to the Charleston area for treatment.
In 2024 alone, the Hope Lodge provided nearly 10,000 free nights of stay, saving patients and their families more than $1.3 million in lodging costs.
Friday's ceremony celebrated not only the renovation but also the lodge's ongoing mission to ease the burden of care.
'At the American Cancer Society, one of the things I've really been talking to the staff about is the fact that every day when we get up, our goal is to ensure that we are looking at everybody – looking at their human condition, looking at the things they are going through – with one thing in mind: that we want to make sure we amplify their humanity. Every single day, in every small way,' said Wayne Frederick, interim CEO, American Cancer Society.
The Charleston Hope Lodge is one of 31 facilities across the U.S. and Puerto Rico offering patients a home away from home during one of the most difficult times in their lives.
