After Richwoods HS graduation, fight at Peoria Civic Center leads to 7 arrests
(This story was updated to accurately reflect the most current information.) Peoria police officers and other security officials had to break up an altercation Saturday following the Richwoods High School graduation at the Peoria Civic Center that led to the arrests of seven juveniles. According to the Peoria Police Department, officers patrolling the Civic Center at 5:15 p.m. noticed a fight between several juveniles break out at the concession stands. Quick intervention by the officers, Civic Center security guards and Peoria Public Schools resource officers broke up the altercation. A 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy were each charged with aggravated battery and mob action, with both being held at the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Center. Two other 16-year-old boys, another 15-year-old boy, a 13-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl were also charged with aggravated battery and mob action, but all were released to the custody of their parent or guardian. PPS said Monday the situation was "swiftly resolved" and did not disrupt the graduation ceremony for Richwoods graduates. The students involved in the fight were not among those graduating Saturday, district spokesperson Marjorie Kauth said. She said the district was satisfied with the swift response by police and security officials to put the altercation to rest. She also said the district was prepared for any such incident, with 20 Peoria police officers, 16 school resource officers and 14 Civic Center security officers on site. 'We're incredibly thankful for the professionalism of the various security teams,' Peoria Public Schools Superintendent Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat said in a statement. 'I am thankful to everyone who made this day special. The positive feedback from families about our new venue, especially the jumbotron view, unlimited seating, and easy parking, confirms it was a joyful and memorable experience.' A video of the altercation posted to Facebook shows Peoria police officers and other security personnel restraining multiple students involved in the fight. One officer can be seen taking a male to the ground, while others restrained another student. Kauth said there will be disciplinary action taken against the students involved in the fight because it occurred at a district-sanctioned event. PPD said anyone with further information on the fight is asked to contact them at (309) 673-4521 or provide an anonymous tip through their Tip411 service. They can also contact Crime Stoppers at (309) 673-9000. More than 900 students from Peoria High School, Manual High School and Richwoods High School celebrated their graduations at the Peoria Civic Center on Saturday. Community Remembers Former Richwoods High Football Player After Tragic Drowning
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Family, friends, and former teammates are mourning the loss of Santonio Wallace, a former Richwoods High School football player who tragically drowned on Easter Sunday while swimming at Navarre Beach in Florida. He was just 17 years old. Wallace's family had recently relocated from Peoria to Florida. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through both communities, with many remembering Wallace as a promising athlete and a kind-hearted young man. A celebration of life was held Sunday at the Grandview Drive Pavilion in Peoria, where loved ones gathered to honor his memory. Jim Ulrich, Wallace's former football coach at Richwoods High School, expressed his sorrow upon learning of the teen's passing. 'Gut punch. He was such a good young man,' said Ulrich. 'He had a good, strong family. You just hate to see bad things happen to good people. And that's what happened here, unfortunately.' Wallace was a devoted fan of the Miami Dolphins and had been looking forward to starting his senior year of high school in the fall. His family has started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses and transport his body back to Peoria for burial. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Peoria Native Raja Krishnamoorthi launches Senate bid at Peoria childhood home
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A Richwoods High School graduate kicked off his U.S. Senate bid where he says it started — at his childhood home in Peoria. Standing in the front yard of the North Peoria home Friday morning, located about a mile or so from Richwoods, Raja Krishnamoorthi said the 'world-class education' he received and the 'community' in Peoria 'really shaped who I am today.' In the audience were grade-school and high school classmates of his. The homeowner of the house, long sold from the Krishnamoorthi family, was also there. The 51-year-old man, currently a U.S. representative for portions of Northern Illinois, is among several Democrats who are vying to replace Richard 'Dick' Durbin, who announced last month that he would retired after 40 years on Capitol Hill. 'This is the community that shaped who I am today. It taught me the values of respect and helping each other,' he said. 'I would not be who I am but for Peoria.' His path, he says, started in India, where he was born and then Buffalo, N.Y., where the family lived in public housing until his father finished school and found a job 'in, of all places, Peoria, Illinois.' It's that chance to succeed, he articulated, was at the foundation of the American Dream, and something that compelled him to run for public office. And the idea of people coming from overseas to contribute was also important. The system that brought him here, he said, was at risk. 'Remember that legal immigration system that enabled us to come here that is now being actively dismantled every single day,' he said. 'The public housing and food stamps that allowed us to survive while times were tough are on the chopping block in Congress today. 'And those public schools, District 150, all Illinois public schools and, indeed, all public schools in the country, are under threat as we have an administration that wants to close the Department of Education,' Krishnamoorthi said to the throng that gathered at the house. 'That to me signals all that you need to know about their belief that upward mobility should be available to everybody.' The stump speech hit upon many traditional Democratic themes but central was his own story of the American Dream, which he says is being threatened by the Trump Administration. 'And so that's why today I am proud to announce that I am seeking the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate for Illinois, where on behalf of my family and everybody who aspires to realize the American dream, we have to do everything we can to fight, to make sure it's there for the next generations who are trying to achieve it,' he said to cheers. He joins a crowded field that also features Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton and fellow U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, who also represents Northern Illinois. Krishnamoorthi, a 5-term congressman, said it's about two choices — give in or fight for their values and families. This story will be updated. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
