Pep Guardiola in club-v-country row with England

Pep Guardiola has become embroiled in another club-v-country row with England after being asked to make James McAtee and Rico Lewis available during the Club World Cup next month. McAtee, 22, and Lewis, 20, were wanted by Lee Carsley for the Under-21 Euros in Slovakia as England look to defend their title, but Guardiola said he would prefer them to travel to America, questioning who would pay the players' wages. Guardiola was previously furious after John Stones returned injured from England duty just before important games for Manchester City last season. He also took aim at England Under-20s this season for sending back Max Alleyne with fitness problems after they 'pushed Max's limits'. He also hit out at the communication between England and clubs after Kyle Walker was injured on international duty. The Under-21 tournament runs simultaneously to the Club World Cup and has priority under Fifa rules. 'I know the manager of the Under-21s asked the club for both players to go to the Under-21s but I don't know the resolution right now,' Guardiola said. 'Normally when players go to the World Cup or European Cup we are already on holidays, so that is why they go and now the situation is here and they have to talk. 'I joke and I am so funny… I don't know who is going to pay the salary in these months, the national teams or the club if they decide they are going to the Under-21s. I don't know who is going to pay it. I would say, the players go with the club. They will talk with the sporting director and they have to decide what they want to do.' Guardiola was speaking before the England Under-21 squad was announced on Friday afternoon, and it does not include McAtee or Lewis. 'Foden is family' Guardiola confirmed Phil Foden will travel to the Club World Cup, which starts on June 18 against Morocco's Wydad SC and will see further group games against Al-Ain and Juventus. Foden has not been selected for England's seniors and says he needs to rest his ankle which has given him problems, while also revealing his off-the-field mental problems this season. 'Phil is family for us,' said Guardiola. 'He's a baby boy from the academy and becoming a star with us. We want to help him, that's the most important thing. 'He needs rest and it's going to happen now after Sunday. Step by step he is going to come back, that is what we want. I just want to help him. I don't care about his performance on the pitch, I want him to feel good and the rest will come in an easy way.' 'Not the Rodri we know' Rodri will also travel to America as he steps up his comeback from a serious knee injury suffered in September. But Guardiola has warned against him playing in every City match next season like he did before he was sidelined. 'We are really pleased he's back, really pleased for the reaction from our people to him,' said Guardiola. 'I am pretty sure he is so pleased for that but he's a long way to be what Rodri was. 'I guess it will be next season when he will start to be the Rodri, not in the way we have seen before the injury playing 70 games, playing every three days, I think it will take even longer for that because the experience in this surgery, we have always to be careful, otherwise you have muscular problems and this kind of stuff. 'But it is the first kind of step, for his mind, for his knee, but still is not the Rodri we know.'

Pep Guardiola: I'll quit Manchester City if they give me a bigger squad

Pep Guardiola has said he would quit Manchester City if they gave him five or six new players in the summer. City will look to strengthen when the transfer window opens but Guardiola, who has always made clear that he prefers working with a small group, said he does not want a big squad as they look to challenge for the Premier League title again. James McAtee, Rico Lewis and Savinho were all left out of the squad for the win against Bournemouth, not even making the bench. And Guardiola, who signed a new deal last year to keep him at the club until 2027, said he cannot cope with the emotional strain of having to leave players out when he has a big

FA Cup final kick-off moved after BBC and ITV clash as new start time announced

FA Cup final kick-off moved after BBC and ITV clash as new start time announced The final is set to start at a completely new time following extensive talks The FA Cup final will kick-off at a completely new time this weekend (Image: The FA via Getty Images ) This weekend's FA Cup final will kick off at a completely new time after the BBC and ITV clashed over scheduling. Manchester City and Crystal Palace will battle it out for the iconic trophy at Wembley Stadium on Saturday (May 17) with both teams looking to end their season on a high. City are targeting their second piece of silverware after winning the Community Shield at the start of the campaign, while Palace are looking to win their first ever major trophy having previously lost in two FA Cup finals. ‌ Pep Guardiola's side lost out to rivals Manchester United in last year's final which, like the one before that, kicked off at the traditional time of 3pm. ‌ However, this year's final will get underway at 4.30pm, with the new time agreed earlier this month following collaboration between City, Palace, broadcasters, police, local authorities and the Safety Advisory Group. The Sun reports that the BBC and ITV had been at odds over the kick-off time, with the former pushing for the game to start in the traditional 3pm slot, due to fears over their coverage clashing with the Eurovision Song Contest later that evening. However, ITV are understood to have wanted a 5.30pm kick-off in order to maximise their potential audience and advertising demand. Article continues below But with more than 7.5 million people tuning in to the song contest in the UK last year, the BBC were reportedly desperate to avoid a clash, which would have happened if the game had gone ahead at 5.30pm. The BBC's Eurovision coverage is due to start at 8pm, with the new kick-off time ensuring that there will be no clash even in the event that the match goes to extra-time or penalties. It is the first time that the FA Cup final has kicked off at 4.30pm, with a range of different start times being agreed in recent years. ‌ The 2022 final between Chelsea and Liverpool was forced to start at 4:45pm, again due to a scheduling clash with Eurovision. For the 2021 and 2020 finals, the kick-off time was 5.15pm and 5.30pm respectively. Saturday's showdown at Wembley will be City's third successive appearance in an FA Cup final, having faced Manchester United in both the 2023 and 2024 finals. Article continues below They booked their place in the final with a 2-0 semi-final win over Nottingham Forest last month, with Rico Lewis and Josko Gvardiol getting on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, Palace are hoping to cause an upset to lift the FA Cup for the first time, with a goal from Eberechi Eze and an Ismaila Sarr brace seeing them ease past Aston Villa in a 3-0 semi-final win. It is their first appearance in the final since they lost out to Manchester United in the 2016 final, when Jesse Lingard's extra-time strike broke Alan Pardew's side's hearts.
