Can you still get a REAL ID after the deadline? Still fly? What to know
Have you ever pushed back something important until you realize the deadline is hours away or has already passed? Well, it's possible that many Americans are facing that reality at this very moment. Starting May 7 of this year, people 18 and older will have to have a REAL ID driver's license, ID card or alternative ID accepted by the Transportation Security Administration to board flights in the U.S. or go into particular federal buildings, the Massachusetts government website said. If you've pulled out your driver's license and realized your ID doesn't have one of the symbols signifying a REAL ID compliance, then this definitely might be you. Here's what might happen if you miss the deadline to get your Real ID. If you miss the May 7, then you can still apply to get your REAL ID; however, if you plan to travel in the meantime, don't expect the same flying experience as people who have REAL ID compliant documents, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security website said. "Passengers who present a state-issued identification that is not REAL ID compliant at TSA checkpoints and who do not have another acceptable alternative form of ID will be notified of their non-compliance, may be directed to a separate area and may receive additional screening," Homeland Security said. You can also use a different document, such as a passport, to fly. Additionally, it may be harder to get into particular federal facilities or nuclear plants if you don't have a Real ID compliant form of identification, the website said. Even if you missed the deadline, you can still get a REAL ID. To get a REAL ID in Massachusetts, you'll need to make an appointment for an in-person visit at an RMV Service Center or an AAA branch, if you're an AAA member. You'll also need to present documents proving your identity, specifically: One document proving you're in the U.S. legally One proving your full 9-digit social security number Two proving you live in Massachusetts Rin Velasco is a trending reporter. Montpelier named one of most charming downtowns by HGTV. Here's what they said
Montpelier is getting its recognition as one of the coolest downtowns in the country. HGTV recently published a list of the top 40 most charming small-town downtowns in America, and Montpelier was the only Vermont city to make the cut. "Nothing charms like a small downtown that beckons visitors with historic architecture and boutique shops or local culture and tree-lined streets," the article said. "Many small-town downtowns are located in beautiful settings or have stunning views." Here's what HGTV had to say about the trendy capital of the Green Mountain State. HGTV named Montpelier's downtown as one of the top 40 most charming small-town downtowns in the United States. What HGTV said about it: "With a population of less than 8,000 people, Montpelier has the distinction of being the smallest state capital in the United States. It's also a lovely pedestrian-friendly town with eclectic shops, an aristocratic gold-domed state house and not a single McDonald's. The town prefers to win over visitors with locally owned eateries like The Skinny Pancake and The Hippie Chickpea. Drink in the New England charm as you stroll along Main and State streets, then pop in Three Penny Taproom to sample craft brews from across the state like the Green State Lager from Zero Gravity Craft Brewery." This RI downtown was named one of the most charming in the U.S. by HGTV. It's not Newport
This coastal Rhode Island downtown is one of the best in the U.S., according to HGTV, and it's not Newport. HGTV named Wickford, a village in the town of North Kingstown, Rhode Island as one of the most charming small-town downtown areas in America. "Nothing charms like a small downtown that beckons visitors with historic architecture and boutique shops or local culture and tree-lined streets," HGTV said. Here's what the Home & Garden Television network had to say about this Rhode Island village. When it comes to Wickford, HGTV recommended taking in the architecture and visiting the shops. What HGTV said about it: "Dating back to 1709, historic Wickford Village was originally a fishing village, but today it charms visitors and locals alike with picturesque waterfront streets, pastel-colored Colonial-era homes and nautical views across Wickford Harbor. There are a lot of ways to explore Wickford, too, whether on foot as you stroll the historic village, or by kayak or bike, both of which can be rented by the hour or day. Stop in delightful shops like Different Drummer or Green River Silver Co., explore art galleries and dine at the tempting seafood restaurants along Main Street. For winter fun like snowtubing and skiing, visit nearby Yawgoo Valley. There's a water park there for summer adventures." Rin Velasco is a trending reporter. Wondering what candy to get your kids? Here's New Hampshire and Maine's Easter favorite
For adults, depending on their faith, Easter means a complex and diverse set of ideas involving loss, eternal gratitude and the return of hope. For kids, no matter who they are, Easter means one candy. For many children, the real main event is the Easter Egg Hunt, where the main objective is to cover as much ground as possible to find special plastic eggs that typically house candy. The cherubic cry of joy that a child lets out when he or she has found and cracked open a pastel egg shell is a moment that isn't easily forgotten by parents, aunts, uncles or just anyone present who is old enough to remember how happy the simple things used to make them. So you would want to make the right choice of candy, right? But searching through the grocery aisles, it can be hard to choose which candy you should buy for Easter. Luckily, USA Today made a map of each state's most popular search result when it comes to "Easter Candy." Here's New Hampshire's and Maine's most popular Easter candy. (Yes, they have the same favorite Easter candy.) According to Google search data collected by USA Today, New Hampshire's and Maine's most searched Easter candy is jelly beans. If that seems strange and you were expecting Peeps or chocolates, that would make sense as most of the states on USA Today's map of most-searched "Easter candy" had the flavored, bird-shaped marshmallows as their most searched Easter candy, even two New England states had them as their most popular candy of the holiday. Easter spending is expected to go up in 2025, according to a recent National Retail Federation (NRF) report, with consumers planning to spend a total of $23.6 billion. The overwhelming majority of Americans who celebrate Easter do so with the assistance of candy, according to the National Confectioners Association. The top sweet treats bought for the holiday include chocolate eggs or bunnies, jelly beans, candy-coated eggs and marshmallow candy (AKA Peeps). Mary Walrath-Holdridge contributed to the writing of this story. Rin Velasco is a trending reporter.
