Cardinal Tagle named titular bishop of historic Roman diocese once held by Pope Leo XIV
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle has been appointed titular bishop of the Suburbicarian Diocese of Albano, once held by Pope Leo XIV before his election to the papacy, the Vatican announced on May 24. 'The Holy Father has assigned the Title of the Suburbicarian Church of Albano to His Eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle, pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization in the Section for First Evangelization and the new particular Churches,' read the official statement. Albano, located just outside of Rome, is one of the seven suburbicarian dioceses traditionally designated to cardinal bishops — the highest-ranking members of the College of Cardinals. Tagle was among the cardinal-electors who participated in the conclave that elected Cardinal Robert Prevost as Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, following the passing of Pope Francis. During Pope Leo XIV's installation mass, Cardinal Tagle had the honor of placing the Ring of the Fisherman, a key symbol of papal authority, on the new pope's finger.

Cardinal Tagle places Ring of the Fisherman on Pope Leo XIV during inauguration Mass
Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle placed the Ring of the Fisherman on the finger of Pope Leo XIV on Sunday during his inauguration as the 267th leader of the Roman Catholic Church. According to a '24 Oras Weekend' report by Andy Peñafuerte III, the historic ceremony was attended by thousands of Catholics at St. Peter's Square in the Vatican. The Ring of the Fisherman, a traditional symbol of papal authority, signifies the pope's role as the successor of St. Peter, the Church's first leader. Pope Leo XIV also received the pallium—a woolen vestment made from lamb's wool—symbolizing his pastoral responsibility as shepherd of the Catholic Church. Before the Mass, the 69-year-old pontiff used the popemobile for the first time, spending around 30 minutes greeting the crowd and blessing infants. In his homily, Pope Leo XIV urged the faithful to share God's love with all people. The inauguration Mass drew several global leaders, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Italian media estimated that around 250,000 people attended the event, with pilgrims traveling from different parts of the world.

REUTERS/ Yara Nardi Pope Leo XIV received the pallium and the Ring of the Fisherman as he was inaugurated as the 267th pontiff of the Catholic Church at St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City on Sunday. The inauguration marks the beginning of Pope Leo XIV's papacy. It also features the bestowal of the Petrine episcopal insignia associated with St. Peter, the first head of the Catholic Church. But what do these signify? The pallium During his inauguration Mass, Cardinal Deacon Dominique Mamberti placed the pallium on Pope Leo XIV's shoulders. It is a liturgical vestment made from lambs' wool, which symbolizes the Good Shepherd who carries the lost sheep on his shoulders and recalls St. Peter's threefold response to tend to God's flock. The pallium also represents Jesus Christ, who lifted humanity by taking on human nature and died and resurrected. The pallium is a narrow band featuring six black crosses and adorned with three pins, which signifies the three nails of Christ's crucifixion. Ring of the Fisherman Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, meanwhile, placed the Ring of the Fisherman on Pope Leo XIV's finger. The ring bears the image of St. Peter with keys and a net. In the books of Luke and John, Peter encountered the miraculous catch of fish when he trusted Jesus Christ's words. The ring symbolizes the authentication of faith and the mission given to Peter to strengthen the Church's faith. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/BM, GMA Integrated News
