Golfing prodigy Cooper Moore among six teens picked to represent NZ at Junior World Cup
Some of the world's most prestigious golfers have competed in the event before, including 2016 Rio Olympics gold medallist and 2013 US Open champion Justin Rose (England), two-time major winner Jon Rahm (Spain) and the first Japanese golfer to win a major tournament – the 2021 Masters – Hideki Matsuyama. Heading the boys' group is 16-year-old golfing sensation Moore from Christchurch who currently sits 257th in the world amateur golf ranking. It's been a stellar seven months for Moore, who won the New Zealand Amateur Championship in November and the Australian Boys' Amateur last month. He also played in his first New Zealand Open in Queenstown in February. It was in spectacular fashion that the St Bede's College Year 12 student won the Australian Boys' Amateur too, holing out from a greenside bunker to end a dramatic three-hole playoff at Indooroopilly Golf Club in Brisbane. Moore competed at the 2023 edition of the Junior Golf World Cup, which was played at the same course in Japan, and says he will rely on previous experience as he eyes a top-five individual result. 'I think it's going to be pretty helpful,' he told the Herald. 'I feel like I know the course reasonably well, been there before and I guess [I know] what to expect as well with the competition and the way the tournament is run.' He was excited at the prospect of coming up against the best young golfers in the world. 'Two years ago I didn't have the length I have now and I struggled quite a bit with that, so I think it'll be quite nice going back and hitting the ball further. 'My game has definitely gotten better over that time, so it'll be cool to see the improvement.' Also returning to the tournament for a second time is 18-year-old Aucklander Turnball, who has also notched up a number of wins over his short career. Zheng will lead the girls team, looking to continue her strong form in 2025 after winning the New Zealand Strokeplay Championship Women's title last month. She also had a strong showing at the Australian Junior Girls Amateur a week later, with a top-10 finish. Golf New Zealand's talent development manager, Liz McKinnon, and academy coach, Jay Carter, will also travel to Japan next month to support the team. 'This event will provide our players with an amazing opportunity to compete against some of the best young players from around the world,' McKinnon said. 'The golf course and the different environment that Japan provides will test not only their golf skills but their travel, tournament prep and in-event systems.'

Assets worth R24.8m seized in National Lotteries Commission corruption probe
The Special Tribunal has granted an order to the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), allowing the anti-corruption unit to freeze assets worth about R24.8m related to the alleged misappropriation of a National Lotteries Commission (NLC) grant. According to the SIU, the order freezes two vehicles and a high-value Powerstar vehicle allegedly bought with money intended to fund the 2016 Rio Olympics 'Roadshow Send-Off' campaign. 'The judgment follows an SIU investigation that uncovered a co-ordinated scheme involving the Mshandukani Foundation NPO, registered just four months before receiving the grant. 'In July 2016, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee applied for funding on behalf of Mshandukani Foundation, claiming it would support Olympic awareness events nationwide. Despite the foundation's lack of track record, the NLC approved R24.98m within six days,' the SIU said. The money was then transferred to the NPO's accounts in three tranches. Within days, those funds were allegedly diverted to entities linked to NLC officials, including: R15.35m to Ironbridge Travel Agency, linked to former NLC COO Phillemon Letwaba, used for cars, goats, and personal expenses. R7.23m to Mshandukani Holdings, controlled by foundation member Mashudu Shandukani. Direct payments of R450 000 to Letwaba and R600 000 to former NLC legal manager Tsietsi Maselwa. 'The order of the Special Tribunal is part of implementing SIU investigation outcomes and consequence management to recover financial losses suffered by state institutions because of corruption or negligence. 'The SIU is empowered to institute a civil action in the High Court or a Special Tribunal to correct any wrongdoing uncovered during investigations caused by corruption, fraud, or maladministration. 'In line with the Special Investigating Units and Special Tribunals Act 74 of 1996, the SIU refers any evidence pointing to criminal conduct it uncovers to the National Prosecuting Authority for further action,' the SIU said. – Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Ex-Olympic swim champion Agnel to go on trial over rape allegations
The investigation began in the summer of 2021 following a complaint from a swimmer who trained with Agnel in the eastern city of Mulhouse between 2014 and 2016. The swimmer is suspected of having had a relationship with his coach's daughter while staying at her parent's home in 2016, when he was 24 and she was 13. Agnel, now 32, has always insisted the relationship was consensual and loving. The former champion was indicted on charges of rape of a minor under the age of 15, Mulhouse public prosecutor Nicolas Heitz said in a statement. He is also being prosecuted for sexual assault of a minor under the age of 15, with both charges pertaining to the same victim. Agnel remains under judicial supervision. The investigation follows a complaint from Naome Horter, the daughter of the swimmer's former coach, Lionel Horter. According to prosecutors, the events in question took place between December, 31, 2015 and August 31, 2016 in various locations including Mulhouse, Thailand and the island of Tenerife. The investigation led to the indictment of the swimmer five months later, in December 2021. Agnel has always denied that he had any control over the teenager. The public prosecutor at the time, Edwige Roux-Morizot, considered that "the facts constitute rape and sexual assault due to the age difference, because the justice system considers that there is genuine moral duress." Last July, the swimmer, who had retired in 2016, went to the office of the investigating judge in Mulhouse for a confrontation that he had requested with his accuser, now in her early 20s. Agnel came to international prominence at the 2010 European championships when he won gold in the 400-metre freestyle, setting a new French and championships record. Two years later he starred at the London Olympics when he took gold in the 200m freestyle and the 4x100m freestyle relay as well as silver in the 4x200m freestyle relay. He collected gold medals in the same two events in the 2013 world championships. Agnel qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics to defend his 200m freestyle title but failed to get through the heats and announced his retirement from swimming soon after. © 2025 AFP
