Home and Away star forced to break silence as he issues warning to his female fans over bizarre catfishing scam
A popular Home and Away star has been caught up in a bizarre Facebook catfish scam. Nicholas Cartwright, 36, was forced to break his silence on Monday after a person pretending to be him contacted numerous female fans of the actor over social media. Cartwright said scammers had been using 'catfish' Facebook profiles to lure unsuspecting women into believing they were in a relationship with him. The scammer would then ask the women for cash. 'Look guys I normally don't like to have to make these announcement things,' he began. 'But a lot of women are getting scammed and catfished by profiles on Facebook using my image. I've been getting a lot of messages about it. 'I was sort of hoping that it would just go away and it's not. Now, I've got people contacting my managers and my family, and all sorts of bizarre stuff is going on.' The actor has pinned the video to highlights on his Instagram page, which has 70,000 followers, and labelled it: 'Scam Alert'. 'This is my only social media. I hardly even use social media,' he continued. 'I don't know if you've noticed, but it's terrible.' Nicholas poked fun at the quality of his video as he said that he uses an old Motorola phone that he pays $1 per month for. The actor sincerely apologised to any fans who had fallen victim to the scam and repeated that @_nicholas_cartwright_ on Instagram is his one-and-only social media profile. 'Long story short, I apologise to anyone that is getting scammed. Not that it's my fault, but I hope that you're okay,' he said. 'So if you see anyone that looks like me on social media, I'm not asking for money, or trying to get married to anyone in New Zealand!' Catfishing refers to the creation of a fictitious online persona, or fake identity, with the intent of deception. Unfortunately, it is a common tactic used by scammers to mislead victims into online romantic relationships for financial gain. Two years ago, a man accused of stalking Sophie Monk after arriving at her door with a red rose claimed he believed he was in relationship with the TV star after being 'catfished'. Brian Rapley, 51, was alleged to have travelled to Sophie's Central Coast home on April 25, 2023, with the hope he would be meeting her in person after exchanging loved-up messages online. Brian claimed that a con artist posing as Sophie sent him romantic texts and DMs for four months before scamming him out of $7,000. Meanwhile, Nicholas has largely remained offline since a texting scandal involving one of Home and Away's former bosses hit the headlines in 2024. The TV heartthrob lashed out at Dan Bennett, who who ran the Seven soap staple as Network Script Executive between 2016 and 2017, after he commented on one of his social media posts. 'I'd seen him promoting an upcoming (Home and Away) storyline about the River Boys coming back,' Bennett told Daily Mail Australia. 'The show's trying to re-energise that whole crime tone - the drugs and the devilishness - and all I've done is send him a message saying, 'zzz' - as in, 'that's a bit boring, we've seen all that before'. 'Of course, that's just my view; I'm just a fan these days. But next thing you know, I've got Nicholas Cartwright - one of the supposed stars of the show - sending me DMs and calling me 'a c**t'.

The Australian TV star posted a rare video to Instagram on Monday to address claims that he's been in contact with numerous fans. The actor revealed that scammers have been pretending to be him, tricking fans into believing they are in a relationship, before asking for money. 'Just thought I'd make a really quick video,' began the soap star. 'I don't normally like to make these sort of announcement things but a lot of women are getting catfished using my pictures on Facebook.' Cartwright went on to share his heartbreak to fans whom have been getting tricked by scammers, and doubled down on his insistence that he only has one social media account on Instagram, urging people to not fall for further tricks.
