Marilyn Monroe's Jeans Go for $52K at Auction Along with a Rare Item from Her Makeup Collection (Exclusive)
Marilyn Monroe knew how to be fabulous and functional. Among the items that were part of Bold Luxury: The Limelight Edit at Julien's Auctions was a Pandora minaudiere evening purse owned by the late starlet. PEOPLE got a look at the chic, versatile piece ahead of the auction. "Here, it's this little compact. You can see her powder puff and there's still a little bit of powder on there," Martin Nolan, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Julien's Auctions demonstrated for PEOPLE during our preview. Each compartment of the palm-sized powerhouse featured a different function — handy for a woman on the go. So she could call a cab, call a friend. It also has her comb and her lipstick," he shares. "There's still lipstick in here," he demonstrated, carefully winding the cosmetic tube. In another compartment, Monroe had a stash of eight Philip Morris cigarettes. The handy accessory was admired by many, but was not sold at the auction. Dee and Tommy Hilfiger contributed the cowboy boots Monroe wore in The Misfits, where she played Roslyn Taber. They also included the jeans she wore in River of No Return. The items were brought back to the auction block after being part of the personal collection of the Hilfigers. "Tommy bought them at the Christie's original Marilyn Monroe estate auction in 1999," Nolan explains. "There was three pairs in the lot. One pair he gave to Naomi Campbell. One pair he gave to Britney Spears, and one pair he kept. He had it in his office as he moved to various places, framed and now he's letting go of them." The cowboy boots sold for $78,000, while the jeans went for $52,000. Both on screen and in public, Monroe was known for being as glamorous as could be, swathed in luxurious gowns that would go down in history as some of the most iconic of all time. She often wore elegant looks created by costume designers in her films — and would pull some of the gowns for red carpet premieres, too. Cher's Famously Revealing 'If I Could Turn Back Time' Outfit Sells For $162,500
The famously revealing costume worn by Cher in her If I Could Turn Back Time video has fetched an astonishing $162,500 (£125,582), more than double its estimated value, at a star-studded auction in Beverly Hills. The outfit, designed by legendary fashion maestro Bob Mackie, was worn by Cher in the video for her 1989 hit. The sexy look has since become one of the most recognisable in pop culture history. The striking ensemble, which features a sheer black bodysuit and elaborate embellishments, was the highlight of Julien's Auctions' 'Bold Luxury: The Limelight Edit' event, attracting fierce bidding from collectors around the world. Held at The Peninsula Beverly Hills, the auction saw more than 200 items go under the hammer, including rare pieces once owned and worn by Marilyn Monroe, Britney Spears, and other Hollywood icons. Among the other standout sales was a Bob Mackie-designed burlesque outfit worn by Britney Spears in 2001, which sold for $78,000 (£60,280) - over 13 times its original estimate of $6,000 (£4,637). Meanwhile, a dress worn by Marilyn Monroe at a 1960 press conference for The Misfits also reached $78,000 (£60,280), proving the enduring appeal of vintage Hollywood memorabilia. One of the more unexpected highlights of the sale was a pair of jeans worn by Monroe in the 1954 film River of No Return, which sold for $52,000 (£40,190). The jeans had been part of a private collection belonging to fashion moguls Dee and Tommy Hilfiger, adding an extra layer of provenance to the sought-after item.
