National Endowment for the Arts cuts impact Triad

(WGHP) — The National Endowment for the Arts was hit by the sweeping cuts from the Trump administration, and it's having an impact on the arts community here in the Triad. It's a pain being felt throughout the arts community. 'No one could have anticipated what was coming,' said Tiffany Jones, interim co-executive director of the Riverrun International Film Festival. When the RIFF learned the NEA would face sweeping cuts, they were worried about the film festival's future. Jones says while they know $20,000 will be cut from funding they get directly through NEA, but more money could be on the line. They also get grant money from state and local art councils, and those agencies also depend on NEA funding. 'North Carolina Arts Council gets funding from the NEA, and then that funding comes down to our local arts council, so we get grants from those two as well, which totals up to $100,000 in grant funding,' Jones said. The almost $100,000 goes to paying for filmmakers' screening fees, their travel and venue rentals. She says tariffs are making future planning events harder. 'That can impact … our individual donors … It's a wide-rippling effect that's going out,' she said. There is no clear picture of navigating through these challenges right now. 'We might just have to get creative and collaborative just to ride this through,' Jones said. That is a sentiment felt throughout the arts community in the Triad. 'We'll continue forth. We have a strong arts community, so I am confident that we will continue to move forth together,' said Charlotte Marcellus, the marketing director of the Arts Council of Greater Greensboro. While the ACoGG did not receive NEA funding this year, they know how important this funding is for programs like the RIFF. 'Art is vital for the economic health of our region, for tourism, for cultural vibrancy and communities,' Marcellus said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
